I arrived rather late and was greeted (well I say greeted, more like snarled) at FOH by a young chap named Jonathan al - avquavers. I took this on the chin as I'm not a confrontational fellow, but this did not make me and my wife feel welcome.
We where also told when booking that the price inc breakfast. This was to be untrue as when I arrived me and my wife both had to pay £5.25pp. This worked out £1.3125 per breakfast item (1 sausage, 1 bacon rasher, 1 egg and also 1 hash brown. Wasn't worthy of my Jack Russell alfie.
Onto the bedroom...
Cold, wet and uncomfortable just a few words to describe the room. The quilt covers where non-existent, the pillows where concrete enforced. We both woke up with necks as stiff as an oak tree. Highly unpleasant considering we were about to set off to climb snowdon, "about" being the key word. We rented our towels and then had to take out 3 pound insurance on them because there was a 20£ charge if they where returned damp. We carried on to go and get showers, the showers looked pleasant, modern but the downfall was infact there was no hot water. Absolutely freezing it was, it gives me shivers thinking about it. Lucky I had my Canada goose with me, so I got in with that on and it done the trick. Kept me lovely and warm. We went downstairs to get our £5.25 4 piece breakfast to see our young friend jonathan al-avquavers was working the kitchen. Whilst serving he was wiping the sweat of his forehead with his hands and then continued to fondle with the sausage and bacon. This turned my stomach I couldn't face my breakfast. We left 2 nights early. Got charged a £20 cleaning fee as my wife left a tissue on the bathroom floor. ( they had to get specialist cleaning contractors in for it ) Overall I would of rather spent the night at the Dogs Trust, atleast I'd of been made to feel welcome. Wouldn't recommend staying here to my worst enemy. I wish this hostel the best. It's in the best location for mountaineers possible but in future I'd rather travel the couple mile extra to stay in a more welcoming pleasant...
Read moreWe arrived at the hostel whilst taking part in a huge challenge to raise money for charity. This took place over 4 days. It involved a hike of Ben Nevis- 140 mile cycle to Scaffel Pike (lakes). Hike of Scaffel Pike then 100 mile cycle to Snowdon. Hike Snowdon and then 105 mile cycle home to Wolverhampton. This challenge pushed the team & support staff to their limits. ||Unfortunately we arrived at the YHA very much later than expected. Team were exhausted. The manager on reception was curt, rude and refused to offer any flexibility. The kitchen was closed (understandable) however a little flexibility could have allowed us to cook our burger and chips ourselves in the self catering kitchen??? The manager lied and said the food had been cooked and waisted - the chef stated he had not cooked any of our food as we hadn’t arrived. Instead the entire team went to bed without any food. ||The same happened on our return from the early morning hike of Snowdon. We were rudely told there was no sausage & bacon left, when one of our team had just seen the chef carrying a huge tray of bacon through the cafe area!!! ||We needed ID to check in (understandable)! Some of the team panicked as had not any physical ID. Her response - ‘no ID - no entry’ can you imagine how we felt! After lots of heated discussions it was identified that a picture or online bank statement was suffice. This could have been explained kindly and calmly from the offset. Instead again the manager just gave a miserable attitude which was extremely upsetting. ||Every question raised was met with the same response - we have our policies and procedures and we are sticking to them! Awful manner, awful attitude and awful way of communicating. ||All of this to a group of 40 selfless individuals trying to do something extraordinary for our local community hospice. ||This hostel has the advantage of its location only. With a captive customer base wanting to hike, customer service and compassion are clearly low on the agenda! We would NEVER choose to stay...
Read moreFantastic YHA. Stunning location as a starting base for Snowdon. Absolutely amazing and super helpful staff - we had an issue with a group booking which was for an unknown reason cancelled by the call centre, there was no fault of the YHA. The staff offered us free drinks and spent hours on the phone on a Friday night successfully sorting out alternative accomodation for us - huge THANKS!!. The only reason I took away 1 star in the rating is parking, it's very difficult and you need to plan well in advance. There are 9-10 free spaces next to the YHA but you need to be super lucky to get into one (first come first serve). There is plenty of parking opposite, but pre booked only, and on weekends it may be fully booked for the day well ahead, despite the £40/day charge. You cannot turn up and pay even if there are free spaces, because you must pre-book, and the system will only let you do it a few hours in advance. This leads to a ridiculous situation when people turn up in the evening, there are plenty of free spaces, but they cannot park there. Another option is park and ride in Nant Peris, 10 minutes down the road, and coming back by bus... however only for the day. You cannot stay there overnight, the payment machine (cards only) accepts payment only until midnight the same day (£5/day) and there are explicit bo overnight parking signs. Also the last bus to the YHA is at 18.45. They told us at the YHA that, theorethically, you can buy a few tickets for the same day and place them on the dashboard together, but I did not want to risk it. The other options are in laybys in the other direction, or contact the nearby hotel to park in their car park (paid) if there is space, and then walk about 25 mins (take the trail next to the road, do not walk on the road as it's dangerous, no verges). All in all - do plan well ahead and if you want to keep your car close then consider prebooking the...
