South London Scout Centre — Hotel in London

The “Scout Hut” as we call it is high on a hill next to the golf club and surrounded by Dulwich College (indeed it comprises two former playing fields and a building the army used at one point).

It is sort of two fields with a building that has a hall-like space with a kitchen and separate male and female toilets and showers (20p for 3 mins).

What makes it special is that it is -as a scout venue- built for camping with a shadier field, a larger one for games, trees all the way around the outside and you just forget that you’re in London.

Little wooden shelters (presumably former washing up stations), a large fire circle, lots of sticks and easy access to water spigots complete the lot.

There isn’t a playground as such but nor is there really a need with so many little places to safely explore (fences all round). But there is a fun wooden structure made of two huge triangles - seemingly leftover from an army assault course. It is covered in kids trying to reach its pointy summits.

Currently the warden is Gordon, with whom people have had mixed experiences but he does keep the site well and is easy to communicate with.

Sometimes it can be busy with a passing coachload of teenagers from Europe (it is a scout venue!) but you’ll likely find more than enough space...

I went to Dulwich Scout Centre yesterday for the first time for a barbeque. What a beautiful green space, my friends came here as children and have delightful memories of climbing on the wooden structures, and running wild in the surrounding fields. My dog Archie (a Jack Russell crossbreed, was in his element running and jumping amongst the trees - even the rain held off! What a great place for camping, lucky, lucky...

Camping catastrophique ! Arrivés avec une colonie d'une quarantaine d'enfants et un premier bilan : impossibilité de faire la vaisselle à moins que ne soit comptabilisés les robinets à hauteur d'un gamin de 3 ans (que nous n'avons d'ailleurs pas le droit d'utiliser) et ceux qui sont placés dans la boue (de quoi y satisfaire plusieurs porcs).

Il ne faut pas oublier le manque d'hygiène certain des sanitaires où s'expriment le talent d'artistes scatophiles. Et c'est sans omettre aussi les douches payantes (à savoir 20 penns pour 4 minutes de douches qui sont si peu chaudes qu'il est nécessaire de se mouiller à l'eau froide). De plus 2 douches pour tout le camping c'est peut-être bien insuffisant (simple supposition).

Je souhaitais quand même accorder un chaleureux remerciement au propriétaire qui n'a pas su nous éviter les deux nuits blanches engendrées par une horde d'enfants qui appréciaient jouer au foot contre les tentes et qui ne cessaient d'hurler malgré nos protestations.

Autre remerciement, pour ce camping qui nous offre de magnifiques restrictions d'eau sûrement dans un objectif de développement durable (si ce n'est par pur soucis financié).
