A small group of us were fortunate enough to visit the Moat House in Acton Trussell for afternoon tea recently. The Moat House itself is a deceptively large venue but still retains it's countryside charm. The venue is surrounded by well maintained grounds with a large pond to one side and the canal to another. Ample parking is also available. On arriving at the Moat House we were directed to the restaurant for our afternoon tea. We were politely greeted, shown to our table and offered drinks, all the usual restaurant affair. So far, so good. The traditional afternoon tea: Two of the guests were partaking in traditional afternoon tea. Part of this experience involves the selection of tea from a range of 12. Our host for the afternoon poorly introduced himself and produced a tea sample box containing glass jars with all 12 tea options for the guests to choose from. Now, the idea is to smell each of the teas and make your selection. On the face of it, this may sound a little akward. It very well could have been. But it wasn't. In fact it was one of the most memorable parts of the day. Our host, introduced the teas one by one giving us tasting and smelling hints. Our host was clearly knowledgeable and remained professional whilst using appropriate humour to maker the experience all the better. After selections were made the teas were promptly provided with recommendations to leave brewing for at least three minutes as you should with most teas. Next up were the afternoon teas. These consisted of sandwiches, scones and a selection of cakes and puddings served on a three tier platter. The quality and variety of these was excellent with more than enough for provided for a large lunch. Now, what I haven't mentioned is that one of the two traditional afternoon tea guests is a coeliac. This means no gluten, which, normally means no afternoon tea. Fortunately, the Moat House cater for this and the gluten free afternoon tea was just as full of variety as the gluten containing version. I am reliably informed that the gluten free bread, scones and cakes were excellent. The gentleman's afternoon tea: I was partaking in a gentleman afternoon tea rather than the traditional affair. This means that instead of tea I was introduced to three thirds of real ale. This was followed by a large three layer platter including chips, sausage roll, scotch egg, coleslaw, fish fingers and a yorkie chocolate bar. There was more although the details slip my mind. Again all of this was excellent quality and very filling. After afternoon tea was finished we were offered additional sandwiches, scones or cakes from a trolley of goodies. All being full we refused but the option was there. All in all the Moat House provided excellent food and excellent service in a lovely and relaxed atmosphere. Can't wait to...
Read moreReception staff upon arrival were not particularly helpful. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, so we went to the bar and ordered two soft drinks. The server literally pushed two cans at me and didn't offer a glass, never mind a glass with ice or a slice of lemon. We also ordered some food, and the waitress brought it over but didn't even ask if we wanted condiments or cutlery. There is also a fly zapper right above the tables, so whatever may explode above us falls directly into your food! Gross.....||The rooms are very noisy. You can literally hear everything from the next room or corridor. My wife and I stayed two nights for work, and there were weddings on both nights. The music and noise could be heard until very late, something you are not warned about when booking online or upon check-in. You can also hear the running of water from anyone using their sink, toilet, or shower, and this isn't good when you're working late and need a good night's sleep. We were woken up both mornings earlier than planned due to unwanted noise from next door, doors slamming and talking in the corridor. ||The standard double room is quite warm and stuffy. It is a bit dated and needs some modern touches. There was no air conditioning as and just a fan provided. ||The housekeepers clean rooms, make beds but miss the windows which have cobwebs, spiders and flys. ||The breakfast on weekends is from 8 am until 10 am, but be aware there is a traffic light warning system at reception telling guests to wait until less busier times to eat. It was so busy that we sat ourselves and had to wait to be offered anything. We would have preferred a 7am until 10am breakfast option as we needed to leave for work. ||It is clear that the staff at this hotel are clearly preoccupied with the wedding party as this obviously generates bookings and large income. The staff, therefore, disregard everyone else. ||When we checked out, the lady on reception was on a call but placed them on hold to give us our invoice. She didn't want to ask us about our stay or get any feedback. It felt like she just wanted to get rid of us. ||Total lack of attention and the...
Read moreMy partner and I recently had the pleasure of celebrating our special day at The Moat House, and we couldn't have chosen a more perfect venue. Located just a stone's throw away from our home, this charming venue held a special place in our hearts as a couple, making it an obvious and sentimental choice for our wedding.
The Moat House is very close to our church St James, a 5-minute walk that added a touch of traditional charm to our wedding day. The ease with which our guests could move between the church and the venue was beautiful and the short walk was so so lovely with our friends and family.
The Lakeside drinks reception in the warm sunlight was beautiful. It provided the perfect backdrop for our guests to mingle, enjoy drinks, and soak in the atmosphere.
The staff at The Moat House were nothing short of exceptional. Every member of the team contributed to making our day flawless, but we must extend a special thank you to Emily Hewitt. Throughout the entire wedding planning process, Emily's dedication, professionalism, and genuine care shone brightly. Her consistent presence, willingness to listen, and invaluable advice turned our vision into reality. Emily's commitment to making our day truly special was evident in every interaction – she is undoubtedly a credit to the venue's team. Her warm personality and genuine enthusiasm made her a joy to work with, and we couldn't have asked for a better wedding coordinator.
In conclusion, The Moat House surpassed all our expectations and played a pivotal role in making our wedding day truly magical. We wholeheartedly recommend The Moat House to anyone seeking a wedding venue that combines elegance, convenience, and a dedicated team that goes above and...
