Inn/Cottages - Lackluster for cleanliness and service
Grounds/Activities- Phenomenal
GROUNDS / ACTIVITIES- If you’re looking for a day trip or an activity, Barnsley is the place to go! With beautiful scenery straight from a fairytale and wonderful activities everywhere. I can’t imagine there could be a more beautiful place! The grounds are impeccable and with so much greenery and history it is worth 5 stars alone! I highly suggest checking out the ruins and going on a stroll through the woods!
INN / RESORT- However… if you plan on staying don’t be prepared to be as impressed. I will start from the beginning of our trip. We were told over the phone check in would be 3pm but we were welcome to check in early and wander the property and we would get a call. We arrived day of check in to the front desk and were given no map, no explanation, and were just told to wait for a call and were sent back to the car. We waited and waited and never got a call. We called several times past 3 pm and were told the room was ready but not inspected and they weren’t ready for us to check in still.
5pm rolled around and we still hadn’t received a call. By this point we just went to the cottage to see it and found it to be unlocked and started unloading our stuff into the cottage. There were bed pillows in the living room with an unstocked coffee station with nothing in it and no trash bags anywhere in sight, with a microwave we rented for an extra $5 a day that was FILTHY! As well as an uncleaned shower with someone else’s hair all in it, a dirty dusty tub, and a dirty toilet. At this point we figured we would just call later and let them know. We had to get ready for our dinner party that was happening on the grounds.
We finished unloading our stuff at this point it was 6pm. So we called to tell them we were in the room and informed them of everything and asked for the keys. They apologized and said we could come collect the keys.
We went to our dinner party and got back to get quick showers for the night and that’s when we discovered the shower wouldn’t drain. The sinks bubbled back up. And our tub drain leaked onto the floor. We couldn’t call as it was too late and we were exhausted so we went to bed to call the next morning. In the morning they came to fix the drains and apologized and gave us a bag full of the coffee bar supplies without stocking it for us. ($700+ a night you think they would..) And dropped off a huge bag full of towels without taking out our old towels or cleaning up anything. The second day we discovered none of the main doors in the cottage would shut if they weren’t dead bolted and locked as they would randomly swing open with a breeze causing our dog to run out and escape onto the grounds.
After attending a wedding at the manor we headed back for the night to refresh and head to bed. We wanted to take longer showers and enjoy the soaking tub as the drains were fixed, only to find that there was extremely limited hot water. There was enough hot water to fill the tub half way and then run ice cold. Then in turn causing the showers to be ice cold. Again not what you would expect from a top rated resort.
A worthy mention would be the food, as the options were sparse it was still tasty and expensive. However the 20% included tip on ALL purchases seemed unwarranted, from food to services to activities and purchases at the resort a 20% service fee was added.
Overall in comparison I fell in love with the grounds and its beauty, but I can’t help feel that the service and quality of the Inn and its cottages doesn’t come near the same level of luxury and beauty that the grounds offer.
Even though Barnsley had very friendly and kind staff, it doesn’t make up for the poor service and lack of care provided for their guests.
I would love to say we would be back, but I don’t see that happening unless it’s just visiting the grounds for the day as the cost vs the experience was not met...
Read moreMy husband & I are very dissatisfied with our stay at Barnsley. We were hoping for a much more exciting time together but, everything was small, old & boring. Our room was smelly, with bugs & the shower not clean & moldy. I also requested a romantic cabin with a view and literally had the least attractive cabin out of the entire resort with a view of side walks and drive ways for the staff on their golf carts. The mini fridge was ancient and barely working and the ice was full of dirt and grass. Initially, when booking directly with the resort over the phone, we weren't told about large groups being there for meetings, a golf tournament, and 2 weddings. Therefore, no availability for sporting clays or the spa. I attempted to call 2 times to book in advance for the spa and sporting clays but, was sent to a voicemail and no one ever reached out to us. Bikes were old & broken with no where to ride them, trails were off limits. Canoes were dirty & full of water with only a tiny pond to canoe on & no one to assist getting in or out as well as the paddles being too short. This honestly should not be listed as an amenity, it was absolutely ridiculous and so disappointing. The horses were dirty & not taken care of. After rubbing the horses neck the entire palm of my hand was stained brown and their were knots in the horses hair. The trail ride was short, uninformed and boring but, supposedly full of history. The horses were old (mine 20 & my husbands 15) and tired stopping every few feet to eat. There were people coming in the opposite direction walking on the same trail we were riding causing us to stop or our horses to stumble off the trail and onto tree stumps where they could have easily lost balance and fell on us. Then we came back down the trail the exact same way we went up. As for the food, on our first nights stay, we ate at the Woodlands Grill where the food was overpriced and not fresh. We spent $241 on food & horrible cocktails. My husband ordered a fish plate & spent the night vomiting & on the toilet with upset stomach and bowels and it wasn't from the alcohol bc he only had 2 small cocktails and he is 6'2 220 lbs. Breakfast was $60 for 2 buffets with a small selection that was barely kept stocked. Dinner at the Rice House was overpriced. I ordered a steak dinner and the steak was nearly entirely. My husband ordered the baby roasted chicken & received a tiny chicken wing. There is also a $26.00 resort fee per day for wifi, cable & parking. All of which are listed on the website as amenities. I guess nothing was free except the dirty ice. When we were rained out on the last night of stay, the cable we paid for wasn't working due to the weather, we asked for firewood for the indoor fireplace and was told no bc it wasn't the right time of year. In all we spent $2, 081.48. We booked at this resort so we could park our car & walk to enjoy outdoor activities and dine just a few steps away as well as enjoy beautiful outdoor scenery. The gardens and ruins were hardly anything to look at. Literally the few pics on the website is all there is to it. So small! My husband owns a business & barely gets to time off working every day but Sundays & tries not to travel too far from home in case of emergency which is why we picked Barnsley to enjoy outdoor activities, and new scenery but, for that price, we could have stayed home drove 30 minutes & had a blast on Hilton Head Island doing outdoor activities, dinning, staying at a 5 star hotel & going on a helicopter ride. We drove 5 1/2 hours & had a very disappointing experience here. We will not be returning & would never recommend a friend...
Read moreBarnsley Resort offers visitors the pleasures and pursuits of a fine Southern estate: exceptional cuisine, a championship golf course, a sporting club, relaxing spa, excellent horseback riding and wilderness trails for hiking, walking and biking. It’s perfect for leisure vacations, business meetings, and romantic getaways and is just a short drive from either Atlanta or Chattanooga.
If you’re checking in to Barnsley Resort with nothing specific in mind to do for the next few days, trust me, you won’t be bored. Want to relax and take it easy? Consider the seasonal swimming pool, a relaxing canoe ride on the lake or a nice leisurely stroll around the grounds. If you want something a little more strenuous, how about biking, hiking or horseback riding? Shooters will find the Beretta Shooting Grounds by High Adventure Company to be one of the top wing shooting and sporting clays facilities in the Southeast with two 14-station clays courses that feature a diverse layout of shots.
For many guests, Barnsley Resort is all about the golf. Whether you’re playing a round on the Fazio Course or taking a lesson at the Golf Performance Center, you’re bound to be impressed. The Jim Fazio designed golf course offers stunning views of the North Georgia mountains and features what many golfers consider to be the best collections of par 3's in all of Georgia. The course blends in well with its natural surroundings and features strategically placed hazards that make the course incredibly memorable. There’s plenty of room off most tees and the approach shots to many of the greens involve avoiding a hazard or two, but what you’ll likely remember most are the greens. They are some of the quickest, most undulated greens I have ever encountered and only add to the thrill of this North Georgia golf masterpiece.
The other piece of the golf puzzle at Barnsley is the Golf School. At the ripe old age of 32, Head Teaching Professional Kyle Morris has been studying the golf swing for more than half his life. In his own words, Kyle fell in love with the game at the age of 5 and by the time he was 16 years old he was caddying for a friend of his on one of the professional tours. During that time, Kyle developed a passion for the mechanics of the golf swing and decided to make a career out of it. He attended the Golf Academy of America in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he studied Sport Psychology, Methods of Teaching, Biomechanics and Attitude & Motivation Assessment. After a few stints as an Assistant Pro at various clubs, Kyle made the decision to get back into teaching full time and took the position of Head Teaching Professional at Barnsley Resort.
After spending an hour with Kyle at the Golf School at Barnsley Resort, I’d say he made a smart career move. He has a knack of quickly identifying a problem – or potential problem – and offering solutions. His knowledge and use of both the Trackman Launch Monitor and Swing Catalyst Balance Plate is uncanny, but more impressive is his ability to make it simple and easy to understand for the average golfer. Don’t get me wrong, if you know and understand the intricacies of the data generated by these two teaching systems, Kyle is happy to discuss the minutia with you. He understands it all. Whether your golf game needs some fine tuning or a complete overhaul, Kyle and the competent staff of the Golf Performance Center can help get your golf game...
