tl;dr: Motel charged me an extra $100 for "pissing on the sheets." That never happened. My credit card company gave me the chargeback after investigating.
What an INCREDIBLY infuriating experience.
I stayed one night at this motel after my car broke down nearby. Some relatives of the owner offered to drunk drive my car right up to the motel, how nice. I hung out with those guys in the game room, where it said no smoking, but they smoked inside anyway. One of them went to go pick up more beer and got stopped by a police officer on the way back and apparently almost got charged with a DUI. According to him, knowing the police officer kept him from getting the charge.
Anyway, I went to sleep and left the next day without incident. I didn't think anything of the experience until a few weeks later when I was reviewing my credit card statement. I noticed an extra $100 charge from the fabulous 40 motel, even though they never tried to contact me to complain about anything. I called them to ask what the problem was, and they told me that I had smoked in the room and so they had to steam clean everything. They also said that I had urinated on the sheets and thrown them by the foot of the bed. Neither of those things EVER happened. I locked the door behind me right before handing the key to the owner to check out, and I know damn well I never pissed on the sheets.
I called my credit card company afterwards to request a chargeback. After investigating, they issued it to me in full. One of the support folks suggested that the motel likely does this kind of thing often in the hopes that people don't check their statements.
Check your credit card statements, people! And don't stay at the "Fabulous" 40 Motel. What a joke.
EDIT: I almost forgot that the two lovely gentleman refused to stop smoking cigarettes around my car even though my gas tank had just gotten ripped off the car. The air was thick with gasoline fumes and they laughed at me when I asked them to put out...
Read moreWe travel to Texas for the holidays every year. This stretch of highway is pretty vacant and if you're sleepy you may find yourself in a bind. We usually stay in Amarillo but last year we had our Yeti full of Christmas gifts stolen at one of the nicest hotels there. Needless to say, we will never stay in Amarillo again. I found Fabulous 40 on google maps, it had great, current reviews and so I called. I let Miss Ramona know we would be coming in late and she was happy to oblige. This hotel on Rte 66 has maintained its retro feel. Our room was spotless clean, new carpet and we were able to park our truck AND trailer right outside our room. The hotel is offset from the highway so immediately we felt safer.
We have never slept better in any hotel, EVER! I'm not sure if I'm just old school at heart or what, slept like a baby. We reset the alarm TWICE!
They have breakfast items, fresh coffee, and the absolute largest and BEST tea selection I have ever seen at a hotel.
All this for guess how much? $66!!! I haven't paid $66 in like 15 years! Its double everywhere.
Thank you Miss Ramona and family for a great nights sleep and the...
Read moreRoy greeted us when we came in. He was kind and friendly. The room was clean and decorated nicely, and the breakfast/community room had a fun forties and Route 66 nostalgia feel to it.
The free breakfast was adequate, but no one was there to help and you had to read signs to find things. Also, there was a donation box and suggested prices for the "free" breakfast.
To sum up, the price was good ($66 + tax a night), it was about 1/4 mile from I-40, and the room was cute, but the bed, heater, couch cushions, toilet, and sink had issues from being old. The bed didn't have much support, the heater had strong heat with bursts of cool air between, the couch cushions had no support, the toilet flusher had to be held down a while to totally flush, and the sink sprayed sideways. It was like visiting your favorite grandma’s place. You're glad you stayed there because you saved money, everything was clean and nostalgic like a grandma would keep it, but it wasn't perfect simply...
