Hiking and Camping on Catalina Island ⛺️

I had the best time ever visiting the Hermit Gulch campground on Catalina Island. I’d never been to any of the islands there and did not know what to expect. I called ahead and spoke to Regina, the head ranger at Hermit Gulch and she was so kind and took the time to give me a lot of detailed information that made the camping trip work really well. Once I got up to the camp, Regina was really helpful with so many things and even helped me when my stove broke. I felt safe and well looked after up there. I think camping on Catalina is perfect because the town has so many fun and lively things to do and just 1.5 miles up the hill, it is serene and peaceful. I did a nearly 3 month car camping trip from WA state through much of California and was heading home. I probably would not have turned back around from San Luis Obispo if I had not spoken to Regina and gotten my questions answered about how camping on the island worked. I also loved the proximity of the campground to the botanical gardens. I’m definitely coming back and bringing my family. Just a wonderful trip!

I really enjoyed my visit to Catalina Island and my stay at Hermit Gulch Campground!! The grounds were well kept, the facilities were clean, and the rangers were always friendly and helpful in answering my daily morning questions. I also liked that it is more outside of a busy Avalon. The walk to the campsite is reasonable, and if walking isn’t your style, there is a shuttle for $2 each ride, taxis, golf carts. It is also really close to the Nature Conservatory, Wrigley Memorial/Botanical Garden, and lots of hiking trailheads. Overall, the campsite was great, location felt great, and the rangers were amazing, helpful, and kind. I would for sure recommend for anyone looking to visit the island and get more adventure and nature in their visit. I for sure plan to return :)

Convenient and well maintained campground right outside of town. Not sure what other reviewer is talking about, Map shows correct location of campground in Avalon. No coastal views from campground, some of the pictures are not correct, but that should be rectified soon.

Clean Bathrooms and Showers. Pay showers (.25 cents a minute) are a much better deal than $3 for a 5 minute shower at the bathhouse in town. Soda machines were present and free use of communal microwave oven was available.

Short easy walk from boat dock or once hourly (top of the hour) trolley shuttle, last one is 3:pm, for $2. Return ride to dock in town is at 20 after the hour, last one is 3:20 pm.

A little stingy with their electricity. For $24 a night camping I was disappointed when I was told they wanted to charge me an additional $3 to charge my phone. I can imagine during busier times, the charging stations can get overwhelmed but at $24 (per person a night) it seems like this small necessity should be included.

Online booking was slightly misleading when it implies fees would be more expensive if you showed up with no reservation. While a reservation is probably extremely necessary for weekend and summer dates, there was no additional fees for walks up at the time I went, in fact I would have saved the internet reservation fee.

I would...

The on site ranger and staff are super friendly and really care about their campers. Except for cob webs and the occasional spider in our 6 man tent, the tent, restrooms, and showers are clean. The outdated online reservations system caused unnecessary frustrations. I recommend interested campers book via telephone. The proprietors should invest in new web site. It is outdated and confusing. I believe I rented a 6 man tent, but in reality, I rented a six man tent site. Fortunately, a tent was available and after paying an additional $300 for three nights the issue was resolved. Also the faulty camping stove and lantern provided with the tent rental, and the issue was resolved amicably. The camping stove and lantern provided with the tent rental failed to work properly. One burner valve was difficult to turn and the lantern would shut down after about 1 minute. Check your rental equipment as soon after you check in. In the early morning hours, the coin operated showers sometimes require 1 or more quarters to flush the cold water out of the pipes. The cold shower really woke me up. I will definitely return. The friendly staff, tranquil, and beautiful surroundings surpass any equipment or...

I stayed Memorial Day weekend. The campgrounds are quiet, well-staffed, and have good amenities - hot showers (bring quarters), ample restrooms, a camp store that sells necessities as well as snacks and ice cream, lockers, even Wifi! (although it wasn't especially reliable)

The sites were surprisingly mostly empty. I think it's because there was a three-night requirement when I booked. The road is relatively quiet at night - just the occasional golf cart.

Also, this is the only campground I've stayed at that charged per person rather than per site. Hence, why there were no families there. Which is a plus in my book, as a solo camper, but be aware. It's not cheap to come here, with a $92 roundtrip ferry.

The campgrounds are about a 40 minute walk from the ferry terminal. You can also walk to town for food; there's a grocery that's open until 10pm, so I didn't bring food.

FYI the conservancy also requires (free) hiking permits.

There are a LOT of bugs. Not biting bugs or mosquitos, but they're just everywhere - in my tent, in the showers, and in the food lockers. Lots of wildlife too. I saw several foxes, cats, and deers on or near the...
