The Alder Inn seems as if they do not want to be in business??? I spent several hours calling to get ahold of someone on 2 seperate evenings. The exterior is outdated and simply needs cleaning up! Old picnic tables to dangerous to use, grose firewood stacked up against the front of the building,vehicles that are eyesores in the lot,and overall trash such as cigarette butts on the ground. When you walk in there are some very cute decorations and up North themed items yet the desk area is a mess!!!!! The hallway to our room is dark and dreary and needed vacuuming! There were 2 pillows laying on the floor for the 3 days we were there,as well as a bag W trash filled W empty beer box/junk and who knows what else? The hallway needed vacuuming because it had lint and trash on it. We were assigned room number 1 yet the number was gone or scraped off the door? The decor in the room was VERY CUTE again an up North theme. The bathroom was clean, the bedding looked nice and appliances such as fridge and TV worked great. The sheets were dark colored and showed signs of not being cleaned yet could have been? I would suggest white sheets. When I called and finally got ahold of the owner Billi she seemed down and frustrated? I asked what's wrong, " she said it's been a tough year". It seems as if she has given up and sadly the place has potential. There is a new hotel in the town of Babbitt and another being renovated. That's stiff competition yet there's a need for vacationer's,families, workers, fisherman/ sportspeople and other types of customers. Frankly the place needs LIFE!!! Clean up the exterior, clean up the desk area, answer the DAMN PHONE and take 100% pride. The price was more than fair at $55 per night and I bet they could charge more if someone CARED. IN the future I will try the motel one more time and give it another chance. I pray they see this and other reviews and try!!!!Lastly there was/were young children that came out from behind the front desk running around in lobby and out in front door area? Read moreThis is long overdue! ||I've been up to exercise the passes in Basswood many times and worked with the same Outfitters for over 20 years. ||This year, 2022, we did not communicate well and ended up arriving about 1:00 AM realizing we had no way to get into our hotel room. ||I'm with two people who've never been up to the boundary waters before and let's just say our kids are in high school so sleeping in a car is not something we are accustomed to nor did I promise them that for the night.||||Nobody's answering the phone at any hotel and the one hotel in Ely we stopped in at, he got out of bed came and checked he realized he had no vacancies. We are stuck. ||BUT when we call Billy’s, we clearly we woke her up and when she heard what we were going through AND also realized that she had no rooms available, she offered us to sleep on the lobby of the floor in her hotel! ||So she got up, left her home and went to the hotel and set things up for us that we could stay warm and sleep. ||Over the top out of her way AND then on top of that she didn't want us to give her any money ! I really wanted to believe all the positive reviews others had left of this place. I thought I might as well give it a try. My girlfriend and I were in the room for two hours total. There were bugs on the floor that had made it up to the bed and we're crawling on both of us. There was also a mysterious blood stain on the bed sheets, that the owner accused us of planting. I received the most incredibly unprofessional email from the staff accusing us of lying about the bugs and cause of blood. We didn't feel comfortable there but they were unable to admit it was because of their cleanliness. They didn't have anyone on site to process a refund, not even the owner was capable of this. Incredibly unprofessional. Ultimately they refunded us next day for only 1 day, which I found to be unreasonable.
