This review is based solely on the hiker shuttle service of this business. The one star is for the lack of any interest in customer service. They do not answer the phone and do not return any messages that are left. I called this business at least fifteen times over the course of a month with no one answering the phone. I left messages that were never returned. For some reason the shuttle service to Roan High is not listed on their website options to be able to book online. After spending way too much of my time calling and calling, with no answer, I finally decided to change our drop off location to Hughes Gap because I could book that location online. However, after booking Hughes Gap as our drop off point, it said you must confirm with the email link that was sent. The email I received was computer gibberish of some kind; useless. So that did not work either. I assumed I would just have to change our backpacking route to another area so we could use a different shuttle service because I could not confirm the shuttle appointment. I called one last time and miraculously someone answered the phone, I could not believe it! The woman who answered was abrupt and not friendly at all. However, she said she would confirm the shuttle appointment. Three of us show up and there are two employees smoking out front. As I walk up, two dogs greet us; one quite obese with a collar that said "Do Not Feed". I greeted the sweet babies and chuckled while I said to the lady (Jill) "I can see why he shouldn't be fed". She said with all seriousness and with a nasty tone, "That hurts his feelings when people make comments like that." I thought she was joking at first, but she was completely serious. Absolutely ridiculous! I do not need to deal with that kind of foolishness from a business. I am handing over my hard-earned money to you, show some appreciation and respect to your customers. I do not understand a business that is in the hospitality field and has no interest in being hospitable, and can not be bothered to answer their phone to deal with potential customers. As far as the actual drive to our drop off point; the driver was on time, friendly and personable. That was the only pleasant part of our experience with...
Read moreFour of us hiking girlfriends just spent 2 nights—and evenings and afternoons—at this wonderful B & B while we hiked the Appalachian Trail nearby in the Roan Mountains.||This was without a doubt the most wonderful B & B I have ever experienced, from the lovely forest setting to the comfort of the bed rooms to the way we felt so welcome and relaxed. The kitchen/dining/great room area is lovely and has so much atmosphere and homey-ness. Shannon, Dave, and Mary were fun to talk with, so helpful and informative, and interesting. I believe the 3 of them were born to run a hostel like this, to make visitors to the area get the most of every experience!||The famous Mountain Harbour breakfast was absolutely the best-tasting breakfast I have EVER tasted, in the United States or abroad. Fantastic, awesome, plentiful, and delicious!|| Coffee, hot chocolate, and the most wonderful teas were available 24/7, and the space was perfect for reading, talking, or watching TV.||Dave shuttled us to a trail he and Shannon suggested (because it was way to wet to camp out and luckily we could have another night in our rooms), and it was fun, challenging, and lovely, with the spectacular Jones Waterfall at mile 5.||This is already a long review, and I could keep going forever. I hope we will return some day to this incredible...
Read moreMy experience at Mountain Harbor was absolutely fantastic. I had low expectations due to the nature of the few options and just experiencing hostels in general. I was truly blown away.
I spent one night in the double bed hostel room and ate breakfast in the morning. We also purchased a shuttle to Carver's Gap. Not only did our hike go incredibly smoothly because of MHBB's location, shuttle, and accomodations, but it was the highlight of the trip.
The room was clean and private. The price was great. The breakfast lived up to its legendary reputation, and the service was above and beyond. One of the employees stayed up until midnight to accommodate our midnight arrival. Please don't put them in that position like we unfortunately did, but they didn't make us feel badly for a minute.
The other guests had the real trail atmosphere, and I appreciated the family-style breakfast. Facilitating that trail camaraderie is certainly an asset. Despite my concerns that the bountiful breakfast would...impede my hike and challenge my TP supply...I was wrong. Perhaps lucky, but certainly grateful.
This seems a small matter, but...the coffee was fantastic and I would consider driving to Tennessee just to have a mug of it.
All in all, a fantastic place. I will certainly be back and cannot recommend it enough. Y'all are doing...
