Not a bad hotel but just overpriced for what you get, sadly a common theme apparently in Bozeman and Big Sky compared to my last visit years ago.
The hotel itself is decent, with rooms and amenities better than your typical budget motel like a Motel 6 but not rising to the level of say, a Baymont or even a good Comfort Suites, despite the inflated price. The basics were there – the beds were clean and comfy, there was ample room, parking was easy, staff were polite and helpful, and the bath and sink worked well enough. Having two small fridges in the room was a pleasant surprise and the microwave was very useful in avoiding having to expensively eat out all the time, but the place overall had a dated and wanting feel in the details. The door lock would often take multiple tries with the key card to unlock. The TV had only some basic cable channels with no Netflix or other streaming available. The sink had a broken stopper so it drained very slowly. Several doors and walls in the building had obvious spots where paint had hastily been put on to cover up booboos. Little things like that.
It was nice having a free breakfast every morning but even that was underwhelming. For the price the Whitewater Inn charges other hotels would have a hot breakfast with a waffle or pancake maker, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, etc. but the best you could get here was your pick of microwaveable Jimmy Dean's breakfast sticks or sausage biscuits. Serviceable especially with the limited and pricey dining options in the area but disappointing nonetheless.
The pool was great though. Indoors and heated, with plenty of bath towels, plus a nice jacuzzi and a tall slide for the kiddos. It was also open early at 7 am and until late at 10 pm so being able to jump in for some laps every night helped soothe the burn from the hotel charge.
A decent fitness room and free laundry machines also helped a bit. The spectacular mountain backdrop helped too, at least until you had to drive the 7 miles to Big Sky Resort and see how even more breath-taking the views are over there. Which brings me to another point about the Whitewater Inn, despite being owned by Big Sky Resort it isn't on or really near the resort. Instead it's beside the main road from Bozeman to West Yellowstone and requires a 20-25 minute drive up to the resort proper from the junction. Take note of that if you're in the area to attend an event or conference at Big Sky Resort itself. Apart from two gas station convenience stores, a NAPA, and a tiny coffee shop, there's not much at the junction so anything else you need like a restaurant or grocery store is up that road to the resort as well. Unfortunately lodging at the resort proper has also gotten significantly more expensive compared to when I stayed at a condo there a long time ago.
To sum up, the Whitewater Inn is a decent place to stay in the Big Sky area if you won't or can't stomach the higher prices at the resort proper. Some improvements and a more reasonable price would elevate it though from decent...
Read moreNot bad if you’re just looking for a place to sleep and shower. I will say that every front desk staff member was exceptionally nice (we did not encounter anyone else such as maintenance or housekeeping) this is not against any person. As for our stay, I felt like our room was not cleaned prior, as there were marks on the sink and mirror from what I assume is previous guests brushing their teeth or washing their hands. The hardware in the shower needs deep clean, there were hairs from previous guests in the shower as well as the pillow cases. Our bathroom was absolutely so dark that we had to shower with the door open because it would have been almost pitch black. We found out our door did not lock properly and had to pull up hard to lock it or open it, and after room service came to change the towels, the door was essentially unlocked leaving our belongings at risk of being stolen. Not to mention, room service came for a new change of towels and left the bathroom “light” on and they didn’t attempt to have someone change the bulb or anything. Again, it worked because we were in the area for hiking, our focus was on sleep and showering. But if you’re coming for a relaxing, clean vacation, I would...
