The campground is beautiful. The bathrooms could use a good cleaning. We stayed in campsite 83 (hike in campsite). It was not to far from the parking lot. The only reason I'm giving this park 3 stars is due to the raccoon issues. It's obvious people feed them in the camp sites. We couldn't cook and eat meal without them coming up to our site (I have videos of them coming up to our table!!). I'm not even joking they joined us for dinner. They couldn't be scared away. We locked all our food in the vehicle overnight. They still ripped our tent and entered our tent overnight. They spent most of the night fighting each other outside our tent or around us. They decided to come back for breakfast the minute we started the fire in the morning. I don't think this is normal racoon behavior. When we told the camp host about this issue she laughed at us. She was extremely rude. She told me her only job is to clean bathrooms and mow lawn. The DNR officers came out and said they would try to trap them. Warning for any people camping in the hike in sites watch for these racoons. They are active all day and night. No fear of you and can't be chased away. At one point we had 5 of them surrounding our site. We live in the country and never in my life have I experienced this. We packed up first thing this morning and are headed to another camp ground. They definitely need signs stating not to feed wildlife also warning people of raccoons who don't...
Read moreWe spent 6 nights at site 73.
We were there at the end of September to October 3rd.
Full spectrum of temperatures. Got a couple of days but cool enough, all but one evening, for a camp fire.
The sites are very large and private. They are gravel sites.
We were next to the shower house but again, the sites are so large that we were never disturbed by the coming and going if the other campers.
You will need to fill up with water as you come in, they don’t have hydrants in between sites like some campgrounds do.
Now they do have some full hookup sites available, so you can pull up the site map and see where those are.
For our site, no.
Take an hose or two with you. We were close to highway, but couldn’t see it or hear vehicles. I believe we were 5 sites in.
The hiking opportunities are great and you’re within 7-10 minutes of Boone, Walmart, McDonald’s, gas, etc. The Iowa Arboretum is within a few miles. Ames was only a 25 minute drive and we even drove to the High Trestle Bridge and the Kate Shelley Bridge. So much to do.
Camp host was nice, DNR drives through pretty regularly.
Just a great location and be sure to see what DNR activities might be schedule while you’re there.
This trip included hikes named Fungus Among us, they had a hike and talk about the leaves changing, one evening a couple of horses were brought in. Very...
Read moreI feel it’s fair to give praise when it’s due as well as criticism and unfortunately this weekend (June 20th, 2025) the campgrounds look terrible!! Standing water around playground equipment as well as the fill stations for water and not just a little water. Standing water at a lot of the campsites, muddy messy campsites. I understand campgrounds can’t control mother nature but a drainage system might be in order but the worst part to me, is the campsites are SO overgrown with weeds and the grass hasn’t been cut in quite sometime. It’s really like a jungle out here. For what we have to pay to camp every night for full electric, these sites should be in MUCH better shape. The host was out mowing his/her site when we arrived on Thursday but none other. Do better Ledges!! Clean...
