I booked a reservation to stay here almost a year in advance as I was planning a family trip. I booked 2 cabins and 1 campsite. I originally booked a small campsite (we upgraded out motor home and needed a bigger one) the lady who takes the reservation calls didn't hesitate to put me on the opposite side of the campground and then snarkily say we don't have anything else, if you want to cancel or take days off we can do that. That should have been a warning sign right there, we took 1 night off but were still accross the entire campground far from my family. We got there to check in and the gentlemen who ran the counter was nice (his wife was not so nice) and check in went fine. There is an elderly gentlemen who runs the grounds who is not pleasant at all. He is very bossy and rude. He spent 20 minutes telling us what to do with out car hauler and repeated the directions around 4 times as if he thought we couldn't understand it the first time. it's kind of inconvenient how far away the trailer storage is from the actual sites. We went out hiking the next day. We have 2 dogs who are well trained, they do bark a little but we never leave them barking during quiet time. The older gentlemen I mentioned drove up to our site didn't say hi or how are you or anything and just snapped YOUR dogs, board them or take them with you" then drove away....That is not how you should speak to paying guests at your campground I went to the Front desk and told the lady that we have no problem fixing any issues if we are addressed properly, I shouldn't be snapped at, in addition to that both TVs were broken in the cabin and he was rude about fixing them as well. That evening he sat there staring at us for about an hour which made me uncomfortable. We had a decent time the rest of our stay but the mood wasn't right because of the previous issues. The campground is very clean, the bathhouses are a tad small but each one is private which I like. There's only one access point I saw to the creek but it was enough. The day of check out we went to get our car hauler and children we climbing all over it and a family reunion was blocking the area, we asked the lady at the desk how she wanted us to handle this and she said "I don't know what to tell you"...again not the way you should run a business....perhaps HELP your guest's so we can check out on time. I also disagree with the Anti Firearm policy they have. All in all the staff is not helpful and not really willing to lift a finger to do their jobs. The location is great though, tubing is affordable, and the very close to the downtown area. I'm willing to change my rating if the owners would like to explain why we had all of these issues and no one...
Read moreThis is a review that focuses more on the cost, and how the management does not honor "family" at a place that is meant to be family friendly. My wife and I have 6 children - bigger family than most, smaller than some, but this family campground essentially penalizes you for having a family that is larger than the American average.
So its ~ $40 for the base price for up to 6. Then you tack on an extra $10 per child per night - an extra $20 a night. Then you have to pay another $10 in order to put a tent up.
I understand some of these charges - more people means more resource use, but $10 a night for a tent? We have already paid for spot. What does it matter what we put up as long as we are quiet and responsible campers. $10 a day for each extra camper is too much as well. Make $5 and we may come back, or forget it, and admit that large families already need a break.
This brings the price up to $70 or more. Thats just too much in order to reserve, an already small spot. My assumption is that they are trying to push you to get another camping spot and pay the full price. Why would I do that when we are one unit.
If you want to attract families, if you want to be seen as friendly to families, then don't be so stingy, or don't appear to be trying to leech as much as you can from them.
We loved this place 3 years ago when we first came, but the cost has become almost prohibitively high, in comparison to other campgrounds where we have stayed all over the southeast that do not nickel and dime you to the point that what was once a good deal is no longer so.
We are torn between loving the spot, loving the activities in the Bryson City area, and what feels like prices that are neither welcoming nor accommodating to families who are trying to take nice...
Read moreThe concept of this place is neat. You can camp in tents, RV sites or small cabins. There is a decent gem mining area ($20/large bag to "mine" through). There is a large fenced area where goats live, which we enjoyed. There are a few different playground/swings areas for children. The tube center is convenient, though you must drive your tubes about a mile, and then hike another half mile or so to drop your tubes in the creek. Parking to tube is not easy. We also saw that the Tube Center ran out of tubes by mid-afternoon. Reserve your tube in the morning! There is a general store run by people who seem overwhelmed. Quite a few disappointing parts: When we arrived at 8PM and opened our cabin, bugs scattered. We called management and they said they had just "cut the field" so bugs will be around. The fridge also was not functioning, and was leaking water all over the floor. Management came and wiped up the water, but didn't have much to say about the fridge. They gave us ice bags every day to keep our food cold in our own cooler. The Air Conditioner also was not functioning, so there was a portable indoor unit set up on the floor with a tube running out the side of the cabin. Not efficient, but it was OK. The grills outside the cabin are ANCIENT and basically a metal pole with a wobbly top. We decided not to use them. You cannot put a fitted sheet on the top bunks because the mattresses are stapled to the wall. We wish we had known that we wouldn't have been comfortable in the cabin. I wish we would have gotten a cabin with a large porch, because we didn't even feel comfortable eating or keeping food in the cabin due to the bugs. We had a great time outside...
