First of all, if you're unaware, this area was devastated by flooding early in 2017. This campground was not immune to the effects. Campsites are washed out, no grass to speak of. Just shale rock, which obviously is not the best for tent camping. The shower house was destroyed and they have supplemented it with a make shift shower and bathroom house attached to the main store building. These are poorly lit, poorly appointed and small. Worse, they were not cleaned during our entire 3 night stay. Only 2 stalls and no urinal in the men's restroom. One of the stalls had a broken lock which could have been easily fixed but was left unattended to during our stay, in addition each time I visited the restroom, one of the stools was blocked up and nearly overflowing. Not to mention that there was no hand soap, hand towels and the hand dryer didn't operate. It would have been much easier to swallow the flood damage if we'd been made aware during the reservation process. This place is already overpriced but the decline in the quality of their product has not been reflected in their pricing. Now, on to the service of the front desk. The folks were pleasant but didn't seem to have a clue about what was going on. We had 20 people in our group and used 5 tent sites. The front desk didn't have good records for who had paid, who owed and how much. It seemed to be a guessing game all along. Thankfully, we kept good records or else we might have been forced to over pay. However, one person in our group had a mysterious charge on his credit card the Monday after our stay. When he called to complain he was told, " sometimes I just leave the credit card open and charge the balance." According to the young lady at the desk, she told someone in our group that they owed someone else for the campsite and she would just charge the card. Of course no one is aware this conversation, rather it seems like an arbitrary charge. All in all, we made the best of what was a lot of small frustrations that kept adding up. Also, I should add that they don't enforce any kind of curfew so people play music, set off fireworks and generally party as late as they feel like it. In conclusion, I would advise to take advantage of one of the state or national park sites in the immediate vicinity rather than using...
Read moreWe booked a layover night here specifically because we needed full hookups. The website photos looked nice and we were looking forward to the pool, splash pad, and riverfront location. We were charged the full hookup rate and were put in a water/electric only site. The manager was very responsive, letting us know the summer help they hire isn't great so they mess up a lot, and offered a great solution for us. He really was very friendly and apologetic for the mixup. This is the sole reason I gave them 2 stars rather than 1. IMPORTANT NOTE: This campground charges for black water removal. $5 to use a dump station, $15 for their their cleanout service (they come to your site and suck your black tank out). Not every site has a picnic table. This is minor, as most seasoned campers don’t expect a picnic table at every campground. Apparently the flood of 2017 washed away most of their tables and they are slowly replacing them a few at a time because they cost too much to replace all at once (or even over the course of 2 years). Also due to the flood 2 years ago, there is almost zero grass. It’s all rock/sand. I can’t imagine tent camping is very comfy, and even with an outdoor rug, your camper floor will end up rocky and gritty.. I don’t know if it’s always so rowdy, or if we caught them on an unusual night, I get the feeling it’s the former. This section of the river appears to be strictly for floating and boating. The river was an endless parade of partying day drinkers. You can probably imagine what the atmosphere was like. If you’re looking for a SUPER lax campground where you can play your music loud, tip a few back, ride your atv around camp all night, and float/boat the river, this is the place for you. If you’re looking for a wholesome family-friendly place where you can get a quiet night’s sleep, this probably isn’t the place for you. Big Spring is really cool! This campground is close to this attraction, so there’s a positive they have going for them. NOTE: you cannot float/boat or swim in the...
Read moreCommunication between staff is not good. I will say that the two men that put boats in were extremely helpful. The women at the desk were nice and tried to be helpful but it just seemed to be one thing after another. We booked lots 114 and 115 and weren't shown our campsites when we arrived, so they came down and told us the 2nd day that we were in the wrong spot and to move as it was storming. The 115 spot has a skunk den so we just decided to take the $135 loss and pack up and leave. Our campsite was full of skunks which didn't bother me a whole lot but I was not prepared to move closer to their home and potentially have one of my kids get sprayed. It was also upsetting to find out that they had a policy change as of the weekend we arrived, that they not longer pick up people who bring their own floatation devices and want to float down the river. They did honor for us because we had been told otherwise but we ended up just spending the money on getting two rafts from them and getting picked up. We ended up spending over $600 just to camp in tents (no electric or water just primitive) and float the 3 hours. It was super disappointing for our 4 families, who drove 5 hours. There were so many extra expensive fees it wouldn't be our choice next time. I wanted to love the place but unfortunately did not. The gravel bar was beautiful and I did appreciate the kindness of the staff I just felt very wronged in the situation as we had to leave early and refunds...
