We stayed for a week, which was an unplanned extension and our trip was awesome. Our son had just experienced a life threatening medical emergency requiring recitation on the side of the highway, so sitting at the campground was all we could do while we waited for the all clear to go home 12 hours away. I cannot rave about the staff and their genuine care, willingness to go above and beyond and friendly demeanor at all times. It truly felt like a family there, and they operated like a well-oiled machine. The bathrooms, store, trails, community kitchen, laundry, pool area, game room, pavilion and campground are very clean with staff constantly cleaning. They even clean the water spout, electrical box and picnic tables after each checkout. AMAZING! After over 15 campgrounds this summer, we have never seen that level of service anywhere. They truly care and have pride in their work.
It is super close to tons of stuff to do, and awesome eateries. We loved Farm Burger and Packs Tavern are beyond amazing. I am vegan and ate at both with no issue, and their local brewery options were very good.
FUTURE BIG RIG BOOKINGS (over 40ft)
We have a 44ft, 13’8”, 2 awnings and 5 slide fifth wheel towed with a 8ft bed GMC Sierra 3500, so big rig friendly and big rig access are a must for us. If your rig is larger than 40ft, specifically a fifth wheel, I’d caution you from entering without first taking a walk, or golf cart ride to your site, as several areas we had to navigate severely needed grading, gravel and widening to truly be big rig friendly and accessible without nearly taking out landing gear, bed rail and cap clearance and trees rubbing the side and top of the rig. To be clear, we have 8 inches between our bedrail and cap, but the rain washout trenches made us come dangerously close to damaging our rig in several ways coming in and leaving. Some of our neighbors did damage their caps and landing rear gear for the same reason, but had they gone slower and used blocks to drive over, like we did, they wouldn’t have hit. We actually tried to warn those campers, but they were not friendly at all.
Our big rig access issue was ours to handle, which we did and left with no damage, so please don’t let that discourage you. Just proceed with caution if you are over 40ft, tow with an 8ft bed, taller than 13’, aren’t sure if you have adequate bed clearance or pitch up to compensate for inadequate level bed-cap clearance. I’d highly recommend taking a cart or walk to the site via the driving path before taking a big rig though. Not only does this give you time to access the location, but you can ask campers to move vehicles if needed. We needed people to move a truck and a wood/rock boarder had to be completely dismantled and removed for us to birth the turn to the road our site was located on because the overflow parking was full and didn’t permit a wide enough turn for us. I will note, STAFF ran over to apologize and were helpful non-stop. As a big rig owner, we just prefer to access without moving cars, decorations or anything. Did we walk, or cart to the site first? No! That is our fault and not the campgrounds. We have learned that “big rig friendly” is not necessarily “big rig accessible”.
As it relates to the highway, we didn’t hear it in our rig at all. While outside, you can hear it but it is not bothersome at all. For the most part, I likened it to white noise. We had 6 in our rig, and no one struggled to sleep. It was actually a struggle to get our kids up each day, since they were happily snuggled in their beds.
The cable and internet didn’t really work, but Mother Nature just hit them with lightening, so we didn’t expect those amenities to work. We are not upset at all, as they were upfront with the information and again, I firmly believe their stellar service would have fixed the issue if they could.
We wouldn’t camp in our 44ft rig again, but we’d come back in our 33ft travel trailer without hesitation. Their service was truly remarkable, and they deserve...
Read moreThis KOA is in a beautiful part of the North Carolina mountains. The staff here are amazing. So very friendly. When I checked in I got a little bag with some candy for me and my pups got a little bag with dog biscuits and a quick summary of the rules for dogs. Since they don't read I read them out loud and they agreed. This park's setting is beautiful. Its heavily wooded and at my site the sun coming up in the morning was shining through the trees making morning coffee outside an event.
This KOA is very well kept and you can tell the owners have a lot of pride in their business. The bathhouses are very clean and over all the park is beautiful. They have the best dog park I have seen at a KOA. It's big and grassy. I really appreciate that.
There aren't a lot of sites and they are very close. I saw some people having a bit of trouble trying to get backed in on Friday afternoon because of how the sites were situated. However there was a KOA staffer helping guide people in.
I made reservations late (spur of the moment decision to camp on Labor Day weekend). I got a site but looking around I think B26 was the worst site in the park. I had the trailer jacked up pretty high just to get level. I've not had d that problem before so I was using stacks of firewood to help level things out. Lots of exposed roots and the site slopes pretty hard so there wasn't a great place to sit or position the picnic table. I'd recommend doing some rehab on B26 before renting it again. The site next to me was very nice and I wished I had gotten that one.
The fire pit here is the best I've seen. Both a fire ring and a grill. I was able to grill a steak over a wood fire and make some broccoli too. I forgot I put a potato in the embers so that wa a miss on my part. I love rustic cooking so that was a lot of fun.
You will see in the other reviews that there is a lot of road traffic noise. Interstate 40 is right next to the park and the sound of traffic is pretty constant. Sometimes you'll hear a truck using their Jake Brake to slow down (using the exhaust system to slow the truck). That is very loud. There is a truck stop close by to and sometimes you can hear that noise. The noise is constant but I soon wasn't noticing it much. I spent every morning out by the fire having coffee and it did not bother me.
The campground was very quiet overnight. The people I spoke to have been to this campground before and told me the crowd that usually camps here is respectful and quiet. That was my experience too.
WiFi was good most of the time. Not good enough for streaming. There is a very large cell tower on the property and I had great cell service with T-Moble and could easily stream what I wanted using my cell phone as a hot spot. The WiFi got slower after a lot of people showed up but not to the point you couldn't read emails, look at social media, things like that. Since the campground sits in a forest there isn't much of a place to set up a satellite connection.
The camp store is full of interesting gifts but lacks any staples like creamer, which I totally forgot. That was going to mean an early trip to the store on Friday morning before coffee but the amazing staff handed me some creamers from their coffee set up and I was good to go for my first cup. Very nice way to address a customer need.
Overall I think I would definitely go back for another stay but maybe ask about a better site. I was late in getting my reservation so I appreciate I got a site at all! After some work B26 will be one of the best. The sun coming up in the early morning shines over the ridge and through the trees and it...
Read moreRented a DELUXE cabin for three nights to be with RVer friends. Have done this before so no new to campsites. 2 stars because the cabin was clean. Everything else was way below expectations. I called 4 hours b4 checking in response to their text asking for vehicle info and arrival time. I was told rudely I could not arrive at noon, I could not park my car for 2 hours until check in because they did not have storage, and parking at our friends site was unacceptable. Then, after they actually checked our reservation said that I could come anytime as our room was ready. I also asked, to confirm. What we needed to bring. I was told linens. Pillows, Pillow cases, towels. I asked if I needed to bring anything else specifically. Was told no.
We arrived around 1 to be greeted with rudeness for showing up early until I said you told me I could come anytime. I was given directions and other info. I was also asked if she could charge the balance of my entire stay right then. Apparently money is a priority as we shall see. Oh yes. The free gift is a key ring. Unfortunately she forgot to give us the actual key to the deluxe cabin and i was argued with until she found it in her basket.
Deluxe has certain connotations. NOT! For 140.00+ per night you have certain expectations even from a KOA. others referenced the paper mill smell. It is easily recognizable. Traffic noise is ridiculous. Even those would not have garnered a bad review. But deluxe? You would expect a bathroom door which stayed closed, a night stand on both sides, a small table onto which to deposit a purse or keys or phone, two tiny chairs(one for each occupant) not just one, a toilet which flushed and didn't run at night (i filled a waste can from the kitchen sink and dumped it in, a blanket about which i asked, a sliver of soap and a packet or two of coffee. All missing from this deluxe cabin. Some added items were broken slats in the blinds which let anyone look in from the gravel road around the campsite, a loud space heater with the benefit of drowning out the road noise when it kicked on and which helped when placed in front of the broken slats, a broken remote, a poor TV, a broom for you to sweep your room, a cloth and dish soap below the sign telling you to do your dishes b4 you left only 2 cups, plates, etc. (apparently no visitors).
I spent 25 years on the road and only two other times have i been so sorely disapointed.
Lest anyone think I am a newbie "camper", put that to rest. And BTW I wasn't camping. I was staying in an overpriced...
