2022 Usually a quiet peaceful campground that attracts hikers, with half first come first serve sites and the other half by reservation. It's sad to see the reserved sites not being used when others could use them. River is nearby, by the Trestle trail. Campground is near so many trails, closest being Zealand, Mount Hale, and of course the Sugarloaf trail. Mount Washington cogway and trails only 10 min drive away! Edit:I disagree with some negative reviews about the hosts, I think reinforcing quiet time makes camping experience a lot more peaceful, like who wants to go camping and hear loud music, or yelling. It's bad enough people let their dogs bark constantly, like at 5 a.m. Some people come here and just have no respect for their neighbors. Sound carries through the campground. Also, it has to be strict with coolers and bears! Bears know what coolers are meant for. They love people food and will try to sneak off with it. A fed bear is a dead bear. Thank you Hosts for keeping these 2 campgrounds in order! Camping here in the fall is my favorite time for sure, it gets chilly in the mornings but that's what a nice campfire is for. Like I said before it's so peaceful here most of the time unless you get some campers that have no regards to beauty and peacefulness here and ruin it for everyone. Not being a prude but please remember people that go camping want to get away, and enjoy the serenity and peacefulness of what the White mountains can offer. Update Took a star away: Camped the week of August 1-5 2023, everything was peaceful until Fri the 4th when 2 large groups of college students from MA kept me, and I'm assuming the whole campground up past 1 a.m with just being loud, slamming there car doors, walking around and just having no regards for anyone who may be sleeping. I asked them to please lower it several times very nicely explaining that my daughter and I were planning on hiking Mount Washington next day. Got ignored. Tried to get camp host up, but he would not answer camper door. I'm pretty certain the camp host couple who usually run the campground took off that day/night and there was a fill in host, because they would never put up with that, it was unfortunate and it ruined my camping trip and my planned hike, and we went home the next morning. I will make sure never to camp there again if the original camp hosts are not there, Thanks to the group of college students, they probably ruined many peoples camping weekend, (they were 4 campsites from me) and to the camp host who was oblivious to all the noise they made late into the night! Edit year 2024: I miss the old hosts who kept this place clean and made sure quiet hours were in check. This place has gone down hill since new management took over and did not rehire these devoted hosts. The new hosts are young couple who are never there, do not care about the noise or cleanliness of the campground. I love this place due to my passion of hiking, but the camping experience here has degraded, some nights are peaceful, some are noisy and rowdy, quiet hours not being respected whatsoever! Coolers are left out, unattended, people speeding, where are the hosts? They don't care, and it's a shame! I've had some planned hiking days ruined because my sleep was disturbed, Ive had evenings listening to people be so loud and asking nicely to please have some consideration only for them to be louder. I find garbage and food thrown behind campsites. This is not the peaceful/clean campground that it use to be and that's a shame!!! Please bring back the...
Read moreThe campground was a pretty place to camp at. Had some great trails but unfortunately our experience made us all feel like we constantly had to walk on eggshells to enjoy ourselves. They park must not be visited very much, we rented out almost half the campground and spent close to $500 for 3 days. We had to get more sites to follow guidelines of 8 people per site but were expected to not make an entire sound despite there being so many of us. Which also led our groups to constantly be split up. We had called for 3 days in a row prior to booking our sites to see if there were going to be any guidelines like quiet times and to make sure this was the best location for us to visit. Nobody answered the phones or any questions we had. The women who runs the campgrounds constantly drives up to your sites to tell you to be quiet even when you aren’t being loud. Especially for the amount of people we had, for us to be as respectful and we were , & have a park ranger come & talk to us. He even AGREED we were okay and the women was being as he said “pissy”. She also had told him we left food out and when he walked up to all of sites he saw all our food was packed away into our cars. Only brought out when we cooked. This was her attempt at kicking us out despite the amount of money we spent. We’ve camped many times , and have never had an issue before. We have NEVER had any experience like this camping. If you’re looking for a location where you aren’t allowed to basically even speak or enjoy yourself I would...
Read moreI first stayed here 30 years ago, and have been coming back ever since, probably 20 times since then. It's my favorite place to camp in the Franconia Notch area, and I have tried a few other area campgrounds to compare. There are just loads of fantastic day hikes within a short drive of here, everything from easy/novice level (like Twin Mountain Loop Trail) to difficult/more experienced (Mt. Washington trails), but it's far away enough from the highway that it's so quiet and peaceful. Although depending on which site you stay in you can hear the river softly or loudly which I love, sleeping at night to that sound of rushing water. RV's are allowed, so you may have to deal with generator noise, it's been a stretch since I've been, but I think there are rules about not running them at night though. Check by calling them if you're concerned about RVs to find out the official rules. Communal water pumps provide potable cold and crisp water, and there are toilets in the center of each loop. Just a great place to stay tucked in behind the quaint town of Twin Mountain! One note: there are fire pits, with cooking grates if you don't want to bring a stove, however you will need to get wood, it's just too heavily camped for the woods around the sites to provide anything but kindling. There is a general store on the way in off the highway, they sell firewood there, pretty much at the intersection of 3 and 302 if I...
