Ever arrived at your destination and at first glance you're thinking to yourself, "This is one of those rare hidden gems I've heard people talk about"? This best describes our recent stay at the Walton Hotel. Built in 1904, it has been painstakingly restored in every detail by its owners, Digger and Marie Poindexter. From the moment you walk through the incredible stain-glass double entry doors, you're immediately transported back to a gentler and kinder era. There's not a detail left unattended. From the wood floors and the fresh paint throughout to the tile floors and the amazing carpeting, this is one awesome experience. Everything looks brand new but at the same time, 100 years old. Marie let us pick out our room and once done, she showed us the gathering room upstairs and the veranda that overlooks Main Street. We had the place practically to ourselves! Our room was on the small side, but who cares? It was superbly equipped with a queen bed, HDTV, dresser and private bath. My words here can't possibly capture how special this hotel is. Not a whole lot to do in Carthage, but that's what we were looking for. A place to just "come up for air" for a few hours. If you're looking for that weekend getaway to unwind, look no further than the Walton Hotel. Don't waste time staying at one of those cookie-cutter hotels. Whether passing through or just out and about, don't stay in Cookeville or Lebanon. The only place to be for miles around is the Walton Hotel. And, no, I'm not a friend of the family trying to build up their review rating. This is an honest, unbiased assessment from a fan of getting value for your money, something rare in today's lodging world. Love...
Read moreI had no idea this was a part-time job, family owned operation. Upon arriving at 2:00 p.m. the front door was locked. That's a first. The numbers listed on the permanent plaque by the door netted zero results. I left messages at all, disappointed we were unable to check-in, freshen up from our 4.5 hour drive before a party. We went on to the party. At 5:00 I left messages, again, at all numbers. We had an 84 year old that was tired and she needed to rest. At 8:00 p.m. a person responded to a number and we were able to then check-in. The place is quaint and clean but if you're traveling and need access immediately to a hotel, this might not be your best option. For the record, no one, at any of the numbers, had the courtesy to return my calls even to say "we'll be available to check you in at --". Communication severely lacks, or, at least it did the weekend...
Read moreStaying at the Walton is an unique experience. The hotel was built in 1901 and was extensively refurbished about ten years ago. Elegant its own way, it is furnished with an amazing array of antiques. The beds are incredibly comfortable, the water is hot, or cold as it should be, the room temperatures are good. There is a balcony overlooking Main Street, and if you have a room on the front of the hotel, be assured that street noise calms down about 10:30. ||The staff is relatively nonexistant. To get in, you have to call the numbers posted by the front door, Then, maybe, Digger or Marie will come and let you in, or, maybe someone will call you back. Or, maybe, you can just wait....||I didn't care. I love the laid back feel of the place and will go back, if I have the chance. Just need to remember to bring something...
