Secluded campsite with easy to follow directions. I parked at the lot where you hike 1/4 mile in. Easy trail. You won’t be able to tell there are others camping around you. Campsites have sizeable bear locker, campfire w grill gate, and a picnic table. Bathroom located on campsite 1 was fairly clean and maintained. The sounds of the ocean were amazing. I woke up to sea lions barking in the distance in the morning. The walk to the beach is down the coastal trail road, about 5 min in a car but muuuch longer by foot. Went for memorial weekend and the foliage was green and lush. Pack in fire wood if you’re coming during the green season, everything was damp, including kindling. Campsite 4 had the best view of the ocean, though it is still covered by a few trees. Most sites are huddled around foliage, very private. I bet in drier times the ocean is better seen from multiple sites. Sites are first come first serve. Arrive early to ensure a site, even if you got a permit. Other campers at the site were unaware that a permit was required, and hadn’t registered. I would hate to have gotten a permit, hiked up there, only to find out a party had taken a slot reserved for me. I was so excited to recommend this site to others, until I arrived back to my car the following morning. EVERY car parked in the lot had a smashed window. My car had been broken into, and many valuables were taken. Similar story for others this weekend. I personally believe it was planned, as the road is a bit off the beaten path. The incident is currently under investigation. The lot had a posted “Security Cameras In Use” sign, so I hadn’t been too worried. Ranger assigned to case was unable to confirm or deny that there was a functional camera at the lot. Has really ruined my trust in people in national parks. I ultimately cut my Cali trip short, as I had essential supplies stolen. Don’t think I could stay here again, which is heartbreaking as it was very enjoyable up...
Read moreI really wanted to rate this 5 stars like everyone else, but unfortunately the campsite was in a huge state of disrepair when we arrived. Everything was overgrown, fire pits were pretty much buried, bear locker has an enormous cut in it, picnic table was completely collapsed and rotted through, bathroom was horrendous, and there were several animal corpses throughout the sites. We weren't the only ones turned off by it - everyone else there who booked decided to sleep down in the parking lot. I understand it is technically backwoods camping but at this point I would just select an area with zero facilities as I could pick my own place to set up the tent. If they do the basics to fix it up, it would be amazing as the area is absolutely beautiful with the sound of the ocean down the cliff. Hope it is better for campers...
Read moreThis backcountry campground was amazing. First of all, the maps currently takes you the wrong direction! When you get to the loop, GO LEFT. The GPS wants you to go down a one way to the right.
The camp sites are about a quarter mile walk into the woods, high above the ocean. There are picnic tables, fire rings and a bear box at each site. We ended up cooking our hot meals down in the parking lot, which also provides an amazing view.
Now, the best part. We went down the road to see if there were any trails and we took one towards the sounds of Sea Lions. We were surprised when we were quickly next to a huge group of seals, sea lions and birds all hanging where the river meets the ocean. For hours we watched them sleep, fight, bark, catch salmon, and swim. Could of been there all...
