We've stayed many many places around the world and Dakota Dream B&B and Horse Hotel is right near the top of the list. The only time we've stayed elsewhere in the Black Hills is when didn't book soon enough and Dakota Dream was full.
Location, location, location.
The property is a quiet 10 acre, pine studded, gently rolling landscape that is secluded but within a 20 minute hike of restaurants, bars, nightlife, Mickelson trail, Custer State Park, and more. Incredibly, downtown Custer City is only a few minutes and a mile and a half away by car.
The rooms in the main lodge are wonderfully decorated and so comfortable that we feel at home within minutes of arrival. The living room is a great place to read by the fire or just have a glass of wine and unwind. But when the weather's good, and it usually is, outdoors is where we want to be. Sitting on the porch swing or by the fire pit among the pines are our favorite places.
We've stayed in the Cabin and if you want even more privacy or a place for the family to spread out, the Cabin is the place to be. It is our "home in the hills". With all the great restaurants in Custer City we still "stayed in" at the Cabin and cooked several nights. It's so pretty we'd just skip dinner-out. Besides, the deer and rabbits were waiting for us to toss them their dinner of corn and alfalfa!

If there is a negative about Dakota Dream it's that a few times we failed to book soon enough and had to stay elsewhere. Funny enough, even when that happened we visited Dakota Dream to say "hi" to the Host and get our fix on the porch swing!
I was conflicted about posting this review because once the word gets out we may have even more of a problem with...
Read moreMackenzie is such a phenomenal hostess! We loved our stay at the Dakota Dream B&B and we would stay here again any time we are traveling through Custer, SD.|We stayed in the Bear’s Den and the room was spacious, extremely clean and had a beautiful attached bathroom. The shared living room space was gorgeous! It has a beautiful fireplace, sofas and small refrigerator to store a few items as well. The outside areas are stunning, and you feel as though you are staying in a park setting! We had such a great time being able to visit with the baby cow and just walking her property for some relaxation time. Mackenzie also has a brand new, beautiful, outdoor kitchen where all of the guests can cook full meals if you want, store larger food items and truly make yourselves at home.|Her place is only a 5-7 min drive to downtown Custer, so you are not far from restaurants and shops. |If you are looking for a great place to stay, look no further than the Dakota Dream B&B and Horse Hotel! Read moreIt was only by chance that I found Dakota Dream while looking to book a last minute Labor Day weekend getaway to South Dakota. We've been to the Black Hills many times but we were looking for rest and quiet ....And what a terrific hidden Gem we found! We couldn't have been more pleased with both the Cabin and the Lodge room (we stayed in both) and we can't say enuff great things about our host MacKenzie and her "assistant" Madeline! MacKenzie runs a beautiful place...clean, well groomed, and down right homey! She is a delight to be around and little "Maddie " is an added bonus of enjoyment. Thanks MacKenzie for being so kind, thoughtful and easy to work with on reservations! Your Dakota Dream is a place we'll come back to! 5 stars...
