I travel weekly for business and Holiday Inn Express is one of my company's preferred places to stay. I've stayed at a few in the NJ/PA area and they have all been very nice, but this location near Atlantic NJ is not good. Perhaps because of the area (Atlantic City is a cesspool) this location is not maintained as well as others. The lobby is clean, but unfortunately once you take the elevator to your floor, the hall carpets are dirty and old. The hallway was also very hot and humid (and it was only about 70 degrees outside - actually the first warm day we had in NJ since winter). The hallway was not air conditioned. The guest rooms are moderately clean, but definitely older, carpets are stained, windows and shades are old, and I always seem to find random very long dark hair in the bathroom, on towels, and on the sheets - I think which is actually from the cleaning people. I always wipe everything down in the bathroom, on night tables, inspect the bed etc. This last stay I questioned whether or not the sheets were clean, so I sprayed the bed down and slept on a towel. Last week when I arrived, I checked into my room around 4pm, freshened up (washed hands and face), and went out to get dinner. When I returned about 2 hrs later and began settling down for the evening, I went to take a shower and there was no water - none in the shower or bathroom sink. I called the front desk and asked if the water was off and they said yes, because there was a pipe break on the property. They said they called all the guests (I did not receive a call) to let them know. I asked when it would be on again and they said hopefully in the next few hours - or by the morning. I hung up wondering how to wash up for bed, and what would happen the next morning if the water was not turned back on. I called the desk again and asked them to bring me 6 bottles of water to my room. They did. I was rather surprised that I did not receive a call as they stated, and why they did not have someone at the desk letting customers know when they arrived back to the hotel or have a sign posted by the elevator. Also, I was surprised that they did not offer to give me water until I asked. The water did go back on around 10pm when I was already asleep - which woke me up as the pipes started rattling - and then the front desk called a few minutes later to let me know also. I wont be staying here again. Frankly, as a solo female traveler, I do not feel safe here - the area is not great, there seems to be sketchy people staying there (those who don't want to pay the cost of staying in a casino hotel), and the property is significantly older than other HIE I...

Read moreI'm not usually one to write poor reviews, but I wasn't impressed by almost any aspect of my stay at the Holiday Inn Express Atlantic City W Pleasantville this last weekend.
Upon arrival, the staff member at the check-in desk seemed rather disinterested and mumbled his way through my check in. While I usually think being thanked for being a Diamond member feels awkward, it is notable after every other IHG hotel doing it that he didn't do so. He also didn't mention amenity points, which I have also gotten used to hearing about on check-in. I figured he was having an off day, at least until he started coughing intensely while holding my credit card. He was apparently sick - please give your employees sick leave. I was in town to compete in a sports National Championships AND I have immune compromised family; I really did not need to catch a cold, flu, COVID, etc from a hotel employee.
The hotel overall was fairly clean and well-lit, though my own room wasn't exactly the cleanest I've seen on check-in - hairs in the shower and sink, crumbs and sticky food on the desk, etc. The microwave was disgusting.
The tub stopper leaked and the toggle between tub and shower didn't fully work, so trying to fill the tub had water coming out of both the tub faucet and the shower head. Weirdly, the fridge had no freezer section, meaning I had no way to freeze my ice packs for the way home. When housekeeping cleaned the room after the first night, they took the towels but only replaced half of them.
I was awoken three mornings in a row at 6am by what could only be described as a loud mechanical buzzing in the hallway, which I almost mistook for a fire alarm for how loud it was. My room was near the elevator, so all I can think is that the noise was connected to that?
Breakfast was at least better than a "continental" breakfast, but the sausages, omelets, and scrambled eggs were all overcooked with nothing but hot sauce to put on them, the food in the fridge was warm, and there were no additional options for guests with food allergies. It's been common in other IHG properties I've stayed at to have potatoes, grits, gluten free bagels, etc, something for people who can't have the breads and cereals on offer. Asking if there were gluten free breads available just got me a blank look.
All of this wouldn't normally faze me - IHG properties have been for me head and shoulders above other hotel chains - but for 4 days of this, I paid over $900. For that much money, I had expected a...
