We trusted PATTI to give us the necessary information to access our rooms. Instead we got a 30 second phone call where we were rushed off with four numbers rattled to us. We are able to get into the room, which is okay. We leave all of our belongings and take just what we need for our hiking. We return at 8pm to find that we are locked out of our room. Even after confirming the number with airbnb servicing it would not allow access to the room, in which were extremely essential medications. We messaged PATTI. Nothing. We call PATTI no less than 65 times between us, airbnb support, and the Sheriff's office, after I called 911 because the sun had set and we had been stranded for 3 hours with newly purchased food now ruined, an abrasion I couldn't treat due to the first aid kit locked behind the door. Airbnb support said all they could do was let us stay somewhere else and they will compensate. The cops are unable to get into the door due to it being a historic building. After returning the next day, we received a message from her with the code (different then what we had and airbnb had) and an acknowledgement that she had "received our messages" but was apparently at church for at least 4 hours, past midnight, when we and the sheriff were calling. I knocked on the door to the lobby (which we were also locked out of) and she answered. I told her we weren't staying for her breakfast, to which she retorted "oh I KNOW" and I continued with "we are still very angry about being stranded for hours" and at this point she repeatedly interrupted me with "DID YOU GET INTO YOUR ROOM TO PUT THE STUFF DOWN. DID YOU GET INTO YOUR ROOM." She followed this up with the accusation "YOU FORGOT THE CODE. THAT'S NOT MY FAULT," to which I responded "Show me right now whrre we received a PHYSICAL (or electronic) message with our code - and what of the 65 calls through midnight from us, air airbnb, and the sheriff?"
And I kid you not; This woman slammed the door in my face, almost breaking my nose.
Do NOT RENT WITH PATTI. SHE WILL NEGLECT YOU AND SHE WILL THREATEN YOU. I have a police report to verify every detail of this report, for any of you suspecting the validity of my testament.
I would have loved to stay in this scenic, historic hotel.
But don't do it. It's not...

Read moreIf you are a history buff or are hiking/biking along the Illinois side of the Ohio River, staying in this hotel is a great experience.
As a 200+ year old hotel, you can imagine the wild frontier times at the Rose, with diverse guests as flatboat rivermen, gamblers, and fugitive slave catchers, and how lush and private your room is now. (To get an idea of what accomodations might have been like then, see the third floor hotel museum at the Wilmot Stage Stop in Wilmot WI.)
I booked two rooms, one for me, one for a co-worker, since there aren't a lot of hotels anywhere close to Elizabethtown IL, and we sat on the veranda watching the sky change colors at sunrise and sunset, and seeing barges float by. We chatted with several European guests who were biking the river trail.
The building is owned by the state of Illinois. There is a nice historic parlor nearby that the Airbnb host can show you if you ask. Use The Historic Rose website to book a room.
This is not handicapped accessible (lots of stairs). The rooms are a bit musty. There is air conditioning and private bathrooms with old-time bathtubs/showers. Not like a modern hotel, but how often do you get to stay in a historic museum?
We ate at the Town & Country. Looks pretty divey, but great breakfast and lunch at country prices.
If you are a history buff, put a stay at The Rose Hotel on your...
