Sun Lakes Park Resort has 8 basic entities all under the same owner. RV sites, Cabins and Mobile Homes, Mini-golf, Water Wars, golf, sundry store, Duke's Diner, and clothing and fudge store. This review will cover the following I have experience with: RV sites, Clothing and fudge store, sundry store and Duke's Diner.
RV Resort We stay at Sun Lakes RV Resort every year. They have some very nice sites in the Ridge and upper sites. The lower sites are very cramped and only offer 30 AMP power. Their prices are on the very high end i.e. close to $60 per night for RV sites. The RV and cabin check-in staff are very nice and professional. Wi-Fi is available and free however extremely spotty for coverage and very slow if you do get connected. It seems that the system was not designed by a network engineer. They do offer firepits and firewood for a fee. They have a nice pool.
Duke's Diner Some of the staff at the Duke's Diner can be rude or unhelpful. They frequently run out of popular items such as ice cream and it is hit or miss whether they will attempt to help substitute if they are out of something. The prices at Duke's Diner are very high however due to the captive audience kind of expected.
Sundry Store The store has a limited selection of fishing and camping gear as well as the expected ice. Prices are about 2 to 3 times normal retail which is expected for the location. They also rent paddle, pedal and row boats as well as canoes and paddle boards and life vests.
Clothing & fudge store The check in store sells fudge and clothing. The check in store staff can be a bit rude at times especially if you cant figure our what fudge you want to purchase. Warning: if you ask for a sample of fudge to figure out what you want to purchase they will only give you one sample per day so if you need multiple samples to determine what flavor you want it will take several days.
Keep in mind that this is a boat and watersports heavy location. If you want warm water, have a boat, and or love swimming this is a great family fun location. I recommend bringing everything you need with you unless you want to pay the very high resort pricing for anything you forget. It should be noted that the wind does pick up in the evening so be prepared to tie everything down and if you are in a tent don't expect to...
Read moreI truly do not understand all the positive ratings about this place. Family time is fun but I don't think quality time with family is representative of the resort itself. It was not at all worth the price of 167 a night.
We stayed in a lakeside cabin, which was a ripoff. You couldn't see the lake from the cabin, there's huge gaps between the door and sill which allows tons of bugs in and there were a lot since we were "lakeside." Be ready to smush all sorts of ants, moths, spiders, and mosquitos.
The bathroom is designed for children and you can't move without smacking something. I'm 5'3" and had to crouch to wash my hair in the shower. There was no shampoo or conditioner either which is kinda the minimum you'd expect from a resort. Our toilet also kept randomly running in the middle of the night.
The cabins are all falling apart. I saw so many of them with horribly cracked siding. Our air conditioner woke me up with the smell of smoke and the only reason we didn't get up and immediately check out was because it wasn't that hot during the night. That, on top of the beds from the 70s with how uncomfortable they were and how flat the pillows were, made it really difficult to sleep. The twin bed only has one small, very flat pillow. So maybe bring your own linens if you intend to stay here.
Public restrooms have broken mirrors and broken windows. We spent a lot of time at one of the RV sites with family and they truly pack everyone in - there is NO privacy at all between RV sites. You are practically on top of your neighbors.
So yeah, I guess this place is fine if you JUST want to go swimming and boating in the lake. But there's gotta be better places to stay that are actually worth the price nearby, holy moly. Don't get a basic cabin, I don't think maintenance has been done in over a decade. If our family decides to come back, we will likely try and share an RV site and just have a tent - same bugs to deal with but...
Read moreWe stayed in cabin 5, I brought my family which includes a 6 month old because I wanted the experience of camping with amenities to accommodate a small child. Our cabin did not have Wi-Fi (even though it was advertised) nor any cellular service to work off of for wifi. When inquiring about this a staff member even walked with me to the cabin to verify and then concluded that area lacked in this amenity and that they wouldn’t move us to a different one to attempt to accommodate for the safety of the children (we used a Wi-Fi and non Wi-Fi monitor for the baby) Saturday we had no choice but to stay inside the cabin during nap times due to not being able to use the baby monitor since there was no service. Be this, we would have liked to at least sit outside and monitor our child within range while our other child played. Then Saturday night around 11pm our AC sounded an alarm saying to “check filter” and smelt of fire and the whole room had smelled as if something was burning. Mind you due to the layout our newborn was near this ac due to the pack and play in which he slept in. We attempted to call the only number available, being that there was NOT an emergency line provided, we NEVER received a call back. To have a “resort” without an emergency contact at the least for events such as this is absurd. To also advertise having available amenities just to fall short and not even attempt to rectify is tasteless. Beautiful location, shotty cabins and less than impressive hospitality from the staff and lack of attention to problems ruined a majority...
