This campground was the most friendly, accommodating, and unique experience I've ever had while camping. The owners were so nice to me and my friends, who weren't expecting much going on a trip as college students. Firewood and basically any other supplies were readily available at the shop, and there was a heated common area for cold days, perfect for watching videos on the Roku in there or playing an assortment of games that they had there. We stayed at Tent Site 22, which was one of the sites further down the creek and further from the lodge and office. This was no problem at all though, if not preferred, because we got a flat and mostly rock-free site right on the creek, far away enough from the bustle of the entering traffic to the campground but close enough that only a 5 minute walk was needed to get to the bathhouse, but also with a porta-pot right there just in case. This place was also the perfect spot, since it was close to almost anything in the surrounding area. During our 4-night stay, we did the Bridge Trail down to Henderson Falls (which starts right across from the entrance to The Outpost, talk about convenient), a few trails at Babcock State Park around the Glade Creek Grist Mill, Long Point Overlook off the Fayetteville Trailhead, the Diamond Point Overlook off the Endless Wall Trail, the Headhouse Trail to the Nuttallburg coal mine and down to the river, and in about 30 minutes before checkout, we did a little on-site hike that started near our tent site that led to the falls in the last picture. There was room on the tent site for an 8-man tent, a chair circle around the fire pit, the picnic table, and up to 2 cars (though we only had 1). In the bathhouse there were plenty outlets, 4 hot-water sinks, and about 5 toilet stalls and 4 or 5 shower stalls, this was the big kicker for my group staying at this campground because most other campgrounds weren't open this early in the year, let alone with running water or HOT water. Also, though we didn't wash any dishes while at the campground, there were dishwashing stations, one inside the bathhouse, and one that was across from our tent site that was shut off due to the freeze overnight. The path from the Lower tent sites to the bathhouse isn't finished, but it is 100% walkable despite it having puddles or being a little muddy when wet, I'm positive that the path will be great when finished. Everything at this campground had a polished feel (not posh, just well-kept), like the owners take good care of everything and WANT us to have the best experience possible. I would highly recommend staying at this campground and some of our group might stay here again in the...
Read moreThis campground is very close to the bridge and gorge. Very convenient to the NP. The few full hookup sites they have are spacious and have a stream running behind them. I'm glad, however, that we did not settle for one of the other sites that didn't have full hookup because they were not as nice as ours and were basically in a parking lot. I would avoid site 21, though. It is adjacent to the walking path to the cabins and there was constant foot traffic along our site. I felt like we were watching a parade. It was awkward for us and them.
The music on Saturday night was not our cup of tea, but we did wander down for a little while to listen. However, we and several others left shortly after arriving. After arriving at our campsite, we were treated to a beautiful singing voice from one of the cabins across the creek. Apparently, they didn't enjoy the music at the venue either. The music venue was not far from our campsite, but with the AC on we could only hear the base. Even that was rather annoying when trying to get some sleep though. Apparently, quiet hours don't start until 1:00 am when they have music.
Finally, a word of caution, the entrance is VERY steep and they recommend to go down and turn around and come in from the other direction. That actually worked out fine. However, upon leaving, it really looked like we were going to drag. We actually talked to other campers who were concerned also and read online about people scraping. So, we asked to use the "5th wheel entrance" just down from the main entrance. We were told, no! This was strictly reserved for 5th wheels. Seriously, I'm not understanding why anyone can't use that entrance? Anyway, we were told to go out to the left and make a U-turn at a location down the road. The only problem with that was that there was a car parked in this location that hindered our ability to make a U-turn with our rig. My husband did his best and just barely squeezed by, but not without causing some damage to our tongue because of the sharp turn required. I'm really not understanding why they wouldn't make this campground more accessible to RVs.
If visiting New River Gorge NP, this is about your only choice for a campground near the bridge. All-in-all, it suffices, but if you are there for peace and quiet, avoid Saturday nights. Also, be prepared, if you have a big rig, to have some...
Read moreOne of the best campgrounds I've stayed at, and I've stayed at tons across the country. I arrived late, but the owner, Ross and his sweet dog Humble, were still there when we arrived to greet us. He explained everything and supplied us with an info sheet for the surrounding area; eateries, activities, etc. (PS - Pies & Pints - delish!) Also recieved an emailed itinerary for the weekend events, band start/stop times, food trucks & menus, etc. Yes, they have WiFi. He even checked in later that night to make sure we had everything we needed. Ross, you're a jewel, keep up the good work!!
We have a teardrop, so we had an RV experience, but being a tenter for years, I admired those sites from afar. Literally, sipping coffee from the lodge porch one morning! They even had tent platforms that were covered. Talk about a tenters dream! Anyway, our site was perfect for us in size and we had hookups that were easy and clean (no wasp or spiderwebs in the electric covers). We also had nice railroad tie landscaping that separated us from our neighbor. Not privacy, just territorial.
Bathhouse was incredible clean and spacious. Waterfall showerheads, plenty of stalls (both potty and showers), never ran out of hot water or TP, had several hooks (thank you) and a bench within the shower stall, and had security on the doors for our safety. Laundry is available also!
Huge yard around the stage, which had an awesome live band, plenty of room to bring your chair or play games, and mowed perfectly without grassclippings getting all over your stuff. There were even food trucks and massage by the minute onsite. After a long day of hiking, both were appreciated and enjoyed!
So, I'm a hiking buff and the campground is literally across the street from The Bridge Trailhead going straight into New River Gorge National Park. The trail connects to another trail, which connects to others. I actually got dropped 4 trails away and hiked my way back to camp through thr Gorge. So, if you're looking for convenience to the park, this is your place!! It is located near the Canyon Rim Visitor Center on the north end of the park.
Truly can't say enough about how awesome this campground is. 10 out of 10! I plan to revisit this park one day to do more hikes I wasn't able to squeeze in and I know I'll be calling Ross to...
