This is our second year in a row that we have come here and we love it. The D loop spots are the ones to get for the views, but any of the spots are wonderful and well maintained. They come with a picnic table and a fire ring and the toilets are vault toilets. The camp hosts are usually very welcoming, take care of the place and make sure the toilets are clean. They sell firewood on site in case anyone needs some or forgot to buy some in town. Each loop has multiple water faucets to get drinkable water from, vault toilets and the trash is close. The camp hosts are seasonal, so sometimes they know what's going on in the area and sometimes they don't because this is the first time they are there.
Getting to Swan Mountain road from Frisco is a bit of a challenge as they have road construction going on. It looks like they are updating/changing the bike lanes and making them more bike friendly. If you bring your bike, the bike trails are amazing, but you will hit some serious mountain grades.
Frisco and Dillon have all the grocery stores, shopping and gas stations you would need and are only a few miles away. You can even rent bikes if you are feeling adventurous. Every Friday, Dillon has a Farmer's Market with live bands throughout the summer. They also have boating and fishing events throughout the summer. Just look at Dillon's and Frisco's city page for more info. You also have Breckenridge just 9 miles from there if you want to go do their Alpine slide and Epic Discovery Adventure park.
There are a couple of hiking trails that run from the campground around the lake and through the surrounding woods. They did have a big Pine Beetle infestation so most of the trees in the campground are little/new ones with a few stands of older growth. If you decide to bike around, there are paved trails along Swan Mountain road and into town, but there's a steep grade you will need to transverse to get there.
It's reasonably priced and well maintained. We highly...
Read moreThis is the loudest campground I've ever stayed in. I expect that when disperse camping near others, but not in a campground like this. I'm guessing it was just the timing, but we had one large group next to us with several tents and a party tent with party lights. They played music and talked loudly well into the night the two nights we overlapped, so I can say there are no quiet hours enforced here. There was another group the previous two nights playing music loudly all day, but they turned it off around 10. If but for the noise level, I would rate this 5 star and it's only because of the amazing scenery that I am rating 4 star. However, knowing the quiet hours are not a thing here, I'm not sure I'd camp here again.
One thing I didn't realize is that you have to pay extra for a 2nd vehicle in addition to what you pay on rec.gov when you reserve your spot. I somehow missed this when making my reservation, so I thought I'd mention it here. If you have a second (or I guess more since the loud group had a few cars) you will have to pay the camp host for a parking pass.
The views are spectacular. It's a mix of small pines to some scattered older pines. Amazing views of the mountains from many sites. Some sites are smaller/more condensed than others, but for the most part many are somewhat private. The bathrooms were nice and clean. The camp host was nice and friendly. The walk down to the water is steep and beautiful. There are 5 loops in this large campground, and it's simple to navigate. It is a nice compact dirt road in the campground with about a .5 mile washboardish dirt road into the campground.
Cell service: At&t and Verizon were both decent at...
Read moreBeautiful park on Dillon Reservoir. We had a blast here; the reservoir is terrific and the mountain views are incomparable. Plenty of room for our 28ft travel trailer, and lots of distance from nearest campers.
Easy access to Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, and Keystone. Plenty of mountain biking, road biking, hiking, and watersport within walking distance of the campground. Trail to the reservoir is steep but short (.1-.15 miles).
That being said, the experience shifted toward the negative on the weekend. Prospector is only 2 hours away from Denver/Colorado Springs and attracts a certain crowd of weekend warriors. I would say that 90% of the campers were happy families who followed the rules and respected the sanctity of the wilderness. Unfortunately, 10% of the crowd managed to discredit themselves throughout the night. There were several large groups of 20-somethings who had zero regard for those around them. They blasted music late into the night and sang and shouted loudly several hours past quiet time (10p-7a). I don't believe the campground hosts did anything to deal with the issue since the partying continued unabated, but I also can't confirm because I did not go to the noisy campsites to verify.
The Prospector is a beautiful campground on the weekdays, but avoid it on weekends unless you like that sort of thing. I say all this as a 29 year old who also likes to party; the groups that this location attracts on the weekend simply have no respect for other people. We camped at Prospector Campground in a...
