Call-A-Mattress was my second stop on my mattress search August 2009. I had also gone to Wayne's Bedding on 34th and Archer, where I felt everything was a little overpriced. I had never been to Call-A-Mattress before...
...and when I walked in, I wish I had just walked out. There were mattresses just stacked up on the walls, when I was expecting mattresses on beds...you know, to test them out properly.
The sales people were, to be honest, very nice and helpful, but they are a hard sell. I'll get back to that later.
The way Call-A-Mattress works is you tell them what you want and they just start laying mattresses down on the floor for you to try -- without any support or bed frame. Yeah...great way to really test a mattress! Then they just stand over you while you lay there. Very awkward. They pulled down five or six mattresses for me, none of which I could tell if I even liked because they were wrapped in plastic and supported by a tile floor.
I should also mention that their prices are very cheap because they make their own brand of mattress. They say they have Serta and Sealy and all those good brands, but it's just their version of it; you won't actually find those mattress brands there. They will try to convince you that their brand is just as good as those brands, but you will never be able to tell because you are lying on the floor like an idiot as they try to sell you a piece of junk.
Anyway, when I finally found one I thought I liked (although I didn't like it that much), I asked how much. The guy immediately knocked $100 off what the plastic said. I wasn't sure I really wanted it, though, because I still wanted to look around town at other places. He then knocked another $50 off and told me he'd give me free delivery. I still wasn't convinced, because it wasn't the price that was concerning me but rather the comfort and if I would like it when it was actually on a bed frame.
After much deliberation and down-pricing, I decided to leave and check out one more mattress store. They would NOT let me go. The salesman (Z, he called himself) kept trying to knock down the price and tell me I wouldn't find a better deal (which is true, but it was quality I wanted). To me, this is very bad customer service. I hate feeling trapped and pressured into a decision, especially an expensive one, and I was very upset that they would not let me leave.
I didn't allow them to talk me into it, though, and I finally made it out the door. Just as I'm pulling into reverse, however, another sales associate comes RUNNING out to my car, urging me to roll down my window. He tells me that I can have the mattress (a full-size, so-called top of the line pillow top that was originally 750) for $450. Of course, I say no and drive away, but it was annoying that they were STILL trying to get my business when I was very clear in letting them know that I was NOT sure and needed time to make a decision. If you are really in a mattress business to please your customer, you should let them see other things and be absolutely comfortable with their purchase, not just urge them to buy a mattress the first time they see it because you want to make a sale.
Overall, if you want an inexpensive, okay-quality mattress, Call-A-Mattress is your place; you will be able to talk them down quite a bit from their price, especially if you act unsure.
But if you hate those kinds of sales games and prefer quality over price (or, I should say, quality FOR the price), I suggest you head over to Mattress Town on NW 16th and 13th. They knocked off $50 on a Serta pillow-top mattress that I bought and then another $50 because I didn't need the bed frame. They didn't pressure me or follow me around...they just let me lie on everything and take my time and answered all my questions. I also got free same-day delivery. I felt un-pressured and comfortable, plus they were decently priced and had what I wanted. AND I got a really cute Serta sheep stuffed animal (but that wasn't...
Read moretl;dr: Kinda sketchy store, smelled of cigarette smoke, disheveled mattresses/furniture, really low prices because a lot (all?) of their furniture is used/half-broken (I can't speak for mattresses, though), make sure you negotiate on price, friendly staff, go elsewhere (not worth your time or hassle)
I bought a dining table that came with two chairs here. It was advertised on Craigslist as used, so okay, that's fine for $80. However, the two chairs were just random chairs that were a completely different color wood than the table, and the table had gum on the bottom of it. Clearly, this wasn't an actual dining "set." A chair's a chair, moving on. Brendan (a sales associate at Call a Mattress) helped me remove the legs and put the table/legs/chairs into my car. It seemed like the didn't know what he was doing since he used the wrong tool to remove the screws. When I got home and tried re-assembling the table, I found that there was one whole screw missing and that Brendan had put two bolts onto one screw so tightly that I can't take the bolt off. Now I have to buy two replacement screws/bolts. This would be fine if the price were lower. I regret not haggling...
