This was our first time coming here and it was a great experience. There were some drawbacks, but I'll get to those in a bit. We booked our trip in July, the weather was pretty good. We experienced a high of 84 and one of the nights it was down at 52! We did read that it gets cold at night so luckily we brought warm clothes to sleep in. Having a beanie and warm blankets helped get through the cold nights. Second night was a low of 64, so that wasn't too bad.
I like to book my campsite as close as possible to the restrooms to make the trips short, but just an FYI, these restrooms have a really bad smell. The restrooms are kept very clean, but the smell comes from the vent. We could smell that stuff from our campsite, so I would recommend choosing a spot not too close to these restrooms.
The campsites looked very nice in size, there was some distance between sites. I like my privacy and I like that there were many small trees providing tons of shade and separation from neighbors. The sites have a BBQ pit and a fire pit. Unfortunately a fire restriction was placed the day before we arrived so we couldn't use either or. They allowed us to use a gas stove. There is no running water as mentioned so we brought extra to drink, wash dishes, and shower. They do sell water at the site, but it is very expensive so be sure to bring a...
Read moreWe stayed in this campground as this was a last minute trip and everything else nearby was fully booked, but we definitely didn't regret it. The campground was very quiet during the week in mid August, the sites are shaded and there is a good distance and sometimes even elevation change between them. It was our first time dry camping, but it wasn't an issue - we found that we need very little water to wash our hands and dishes. I was a bit worried about mosquitoes and flies, but at the time we were there were none. The drive up is scenic, but a bit narrow and windy at times, you definitely have to be careful. There are places where 2 cars can't pass each other. It takes about 30 mins to get down to the nearest town. When we were there fires were not allowed, but propane stoves could be used. Unfortunately we had to cut our stay short due to air quality - while the air was still ok in the valley, the smoke was more dense at the elevation of the campground and we started having trouble breathing and sore throat. We might be more sensitive than most people, but it's something to keep in mind during fire season. Hopefully we'll be back in...
Read morePretty cool and woodsy camping site, deer meander here too. It’s about 40 minutes from Solvang. A short drive back out & past the fire station is a great overlook. We could see the cloud cover below obstructing the ocean but we still experienced a lovely sunset there among the old oaks. And two miles up from the campsite is a fire road to the summit. We had a new moon during our stay so it was pitch dark in the evening and we’re able capture the Milky Way off the side of the campsite but you can still experience it from camp if you walk to an area where the trees are a little bit dispersed. The only downside is that there were a ridiculous amount of gnats during the daytime. Other than that, the place is nice & far enough from civilization to enjoy a few days...
