Worst hotel stay of my life! Beware the Sands Motel in Grants!! I'm a CDT hiker. I sent two boxes to the Sands Motel via USPS and neither were there when I arrived... the motel declined to accept both packages. I called them before the hike to confirm I could send packages, they said yes. However, I did not have cell phone service for the last 300 miles (since Silver City) so I could not call them to let them know I sent the two boxes in question. At first, they pretended they just never arrived. After I pulled up the tracking info, they admitted that they just declined to accept the packages because I didn't call them to inform them the packages are coming. The packages were both clearly labeled in neon green tape "CDT Hiker" with my last name and my ETA. Thankfully I was able to recover both packages from the post office with some leg work. But for the motel to deny the packages based on principle alone is just wrong. This was supposed to be a hiker friendly hotel, but clearly they don't understand how important our packages are. Additionally, there was a large hole in the bottom of the bathtub that was purposely covered up with a mat. When I stepped into the hole, I almost fell out of the tub! Only just barely caught myself by grabbing the shower curtain. Also, the bed sheets were full of hair. The owner had no interest in fixing the hole in the tub. Besides all of these things, the hotel itself is old and dirty. It smells bad. Everything is maintained to the minimum standards required to function. I highly recommend avoiding this place, there are many other hotels to choose from at similar prices or cheaper. It's not worth it!

What can I say, it was the Memorial Day weekend and the only place with an available room from Gallup to Santa Rosa, not even all of Albuquerque. Reserved the room through Expedia. Just like for most people, it said $55/night. When we arrived, the attendants who we presume are the owners, were up in arms because they were fully booked. There were only 3 cars in the parking lot including ours and it was almost midnight. Miraculously, a room became available for $95. I don't mind the husle and we gave them the benefit of the doubt thinking they probably didn't have available rooms due to lack of man power but if you are going to charge premium rate, the least you can do is have clean sheets and more than 1 towel/1 wash cloth in a room with 2 double beds. You could tell the sheets had not been changed from previous guests but since we had no other option and fully aware this is a motel, we got our pillows and blankets from the car. Also, just like other reviews, the curtains don't close all the way so we had to improvise by using the ironing board to hold it in place. At least the bathroom appeared clean but we didn't even use the towel. We got out of there pretty early. Didn't even have to wake the kids up.

Chose the Sands based on historic value. Price was right too. We love motels on road trips as we can park in front of our room and keep an eye on our rig. This place was easy to find. Checkin was simple. I was (not pleasantly) surprised to learn there was an additional $5/pp fee for the room, above what was advertised. Fine, just be transparent in advertising and posting prices. Every other policy/fee was obvious on the booking platform and in the office. Room was clean and quiet. While the hotel is historic, decor is more “early 90’s vintage” but functional. This was a good place to get a decent rest; we felt safe and comfortable and didn’t worry about leaving our truck and gear in the lot overnight.

So many problems with this motel. Just to start if you are wanting a Route 66 motel this is NOT it. It’s on a side road and full of sketchy people. Upon check in the owner did not honor our hotels.com reservation and charged us more for our room. Getting into our room there were crickets inside, the floor felt like you could fall through it in areas, holes in the walls, the toilet was duck taped down, there were 2 washcloths, 1 hand towel, and 1 bath towel (this is important for later), the ac did not work, and you could tell something was spilled in the fridge and never cleaned. It was so nasty we didn’t even shower, but did use 1 washcloth and the hand towel which were left on the bathroom floor when we left. A few hours after we checked out and left we noticed an extra $20 charge come through from the motel so we called to find out what it was. The owner proceeded to accuse us of stealing all of the towels and washcloths from the room and called us thieves and said he had video footage of us stealing them. #1 we wouldn’t even put our bags on the floor much less take anything from the room with us, #2 if he had cameras proving any of it he would be implying there were cameras in the room and bathroom. We saw other people complaining in reviews about how he charges and it’s no joke. We believe he targets tourists passing through to get as much money as he can because he knows that once they get a few hours from town that they won’t come back. I would never recommend Sands to anyone and would advise everyone to...
