I have been to 127 countries and 48 states over the last 54 years of my 72-year-old life, spending thousands of nights at various types of lodging and I have never experienced the raw aggression combined with unexplainable irrationality that came anywhere near what occurred at the Southwest Motel. There are many other budget accommodations in Grants, and you should avoid this motel and its owner. DO NOT GO HERE. The check-out time was 10 am and the problem revolved around the clock on his microwave being inaccurate, showing 9 am when it was actually 10 am. Also, my phone failed to update when I crossed into New Mexico from Arizona so it also displayed 9 am. Nevertheless, I was almost ready to go when he started to bang loudly at my door at 10 am. I opened the door and he began an unending very loud tirade that was extremely aggressive and he got into my personal space. He was very aggressive and was very close to me at times during his tirade. Although he had not touched me, I had to explain to him that unwanted touching is an assault and that under no circumstance should he touch me. I explained to him what had happened in relation to the confusion over the time and asked him politely for another 10-15 minutes to pack. His solution was that I should finish packing in the parking lot which was unsatisfactory since that would result in my property being soiled and possibly damaged. He continued his tirade by claiming that people were waiting for this room, and I must immediately vacate the room and place my property on the parking lot. I pointed out that there were only a couple of cars in the parking lot and that he must have at least two dozen available rooms (I took a photo that shows that the parking lot was almost completely empty). At that point he completely went off the rails and tore the bedding from the bed and hurled it across the room to the floor to demonstrate his anger and, in my opinion, demonstrate that he was at the point of physical aggression. At other points in his display of anger, he threatened to call the police. I told him that I would welcome police intervention. He also threatened to charge me for an extra night. I calmly packed while he continued his loud monologue. It took me less than 10 minutes to pack. While loading my luggage into my vehicle in the parking lot, he drove his car towards me and honked twice as a final display of his irrational aggression. You are welcome to read my numerous other reviews that clearly demonstrate that I have always had a good relationship with other hotel owners and no such incident has occurred over my 54 years of independent travel throughout this planet. As for the motel, it is just another decent route 66 lodging that was OK, but the owner was not OK. It was clean enough for me, had a functioning refrigerator and was very average for its price range. The wifi was weak in the evening and I had some difficulty with consistency. It failed to function in the morning. The room was small with a full rather than a queen bed, so better for one rather than two people. There are numerous other options for you in Grants My final words: AVOID THE SOUTHWEST MOTEL AT ALL COSTS. The owner, in my opinion, is very unstable and aggressive. I explained to him that I would have to write an honest review of what happened, and this is an honest and accurate review. Maybe he was just having a bad day, but regardless of his state of mind, there is no excuse for how...

A charming, clean motel with lots of character and a sweet story. Read the newer reviews and gave it a try, glad we did—had a lovely stay here, highly recommend! The new owner is really friendly and working hard on renovating. We stayed in a room that hadn’t been renovated yet, but it was clean and everything worked: cold A/C and fridge, hot shower, microwave, comfy beds. Owner made sure we had enough towels and that everything was in good shape. Got to say hi to the very cute cat, Macchiato. Had a car loaded for moving and felt secure parking it right outside our door. I hope to stay here again if I pass through again!

This was a decent little motel. It was a super laid back place, the type where people are chilling on patio chairs, smoking outside their rooms. Everyone was friendly here, and the area seemed decent. Kudos for the mini fridge and real coffee maker in the room. The room was a little rundown, drywall damage, split and raised up floor to trip over. The bathroom was super small and definitely not built for larger people. While this place certainly needs some improvements, it was still a decent place to stay, especially if you're looking for the old school "route 66" type of experience over the fancy chains.

There are lots of big name hotels along the highway between Albuquerque and Gallup. There's only one South West Motel. Operating continuously since the 1950s along Route 66, it was recently acquired by a friendly new owner who has been refurbishing and updating. My room was quiet, comfortable and had real coffee. Even had a record player with a couple of albums just for fun! There are good places nearby with good food and it's an easy on/off from I-40 for travelers. I parked my pickup right outside, felt safe and secure. I'll be back for sure.
