We stayed at the George Perley House for 3 nights at the end of August in Gray, Maine. It is a B&B with three clean and tidy rooms all with queen-sized beds. Two of the rooms share a bathroom and the third room is a suite that has a private four-piece bathroom, a kitchenette area with a refrigerator, sink and stove top. There are pots and pans, dishes, utensils, etc. that can be used if you decide you want to do some food preparation for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is provided as part of the cost of the room, so you won't need to cook that meal. The proprietors, Rachel and Mike are very friendly and accommodating and were willing to make breakfasts that suited the various dietary needs of their guests whether they liked bacon and eggs, ate a vegan/plant-based diet or had concerns about gluten. The inn was built in the 1830's, so the rooms hearken back to that era, and much of the decor includes knotty pine and wallpaper. The grounds include gardens with perennial flowers and vegetables as well as some chickens and ducks. There is no rooster to wake you up at 5 AM with crowing and the ducks are a breed that doesn't quack. Wifi was available at no extra charge and it worked well while we were there. When you first arrive at the property, you may feel you are "in the middle of nowhere" but towns like Freeport (with LL Bean, etc.) and Yarmouth were only 15 to 20 minutes away and we got to Portland in about 30 minutes. The atmosphere at the house was so serene and peaceful and the area is very quiet for sleeping at night. We could hear a train whistle in the distance around 3 AM, but it was not terribly loud and added to the charm of the area, in my opinion. If you are looking for a place to stay that is in the middle of all the action, this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for a place to get away from it all that is not terribly isolated then we highly recommend the George...
Read moreCouldn't have been more delighted to stay here. Rachel Lynn (the innkeeper) was super friendly and very interested in our well-being. We had a suite upstairs with a private sitting room, bathroom and kitchen. Throughout the day we could see the inn's ducks and chickens milling about from our suite. The suite is decorated in Americana and there were books and magazines for our perusal. Breakfast always started with a fresh fruit cup and sometimes with veggies right out of Rachel Lynn's garden! She is a marvelous cook and fed us French toast, a kale, broccoli and goat cheese scramble, blueberry pancakes and oven-baked eggs with tomatoes to be put on large English muffins. There was also ham and sausage, orange juice, coffee and tea. The property has two delightful cats, Jack and Jill, and if you want to pet them you can; however, Rachel Lynn is very sensitive to guests' wishes that the cats don't bother them. The George Perley House is a bit out of the way (well, we're from SF, so everything seems like a long drive to us), and we really liked it. One day we took a delightful and very easy hike up the road and into the forest nearby. I think we received Maine's hospitality at its finest- thank you Rachel Lynn and Michael (her husband, who was also...
