We decided to stop over in Greensboro on our road trip to visit the science center they have in this city as a homeschool field trip of sorts. We have never stayed at a KOA in the seven years that we have been camping in a camper for one reason or another and this looked to be the best option in Greensboro. We have become somewhat spoiled at most of the RV parks we decide to stay at so some of what we thought was bad others may think is normal.
My honest opinion of this park is the following. This park looks to be pretty old and from what I could find it used to be called Greensboro Campground and you can still see some of the old signage. It looks to have been sold or just brought under the KOA banner likely to funnel traffic to it. I will start with the good and then lead into the bad. The campground hosts and the work campers I think they are called were all very nice and that is what makes this park in my opinion. They were very nice on the phone on the way in, at check-in and every time we had a question which really was not that much but still. They seem to do a very nice job of keeping the park in its current state clean.
Now for the bad. The sites are no were near level. We are always ready for this to some extent but I was barely able to get my camper even close to level. Luckily it did not rain so the camper being off did not cause any issues with water running back into the slide like it will if the camper is pitched the wrong way excessively. The campground is on a slight slope anyway so it is sort of understandable but this is fixable at every campground in my opinion. Every campground if you are going to be getting allot of traffic needs to have pretty level camp sites to make it easy for people to level and unhook and rest as needed. The bathhouses are very very dated and probably have not been redone since they were built. The only reason I used the shower was because I really needed one. Had we only been staying one night I would have passed on it entirely. Do not even try to go to the upper bathroom it is worse than the lower bathroom by a long shot. The campground is right off the interstate and I mean right off the interstate. You can hear the road noise but in my opinion it is not as bad as some reviews make it out to be at least for us since we sleep with the TV on so our dog does not hear every noise outside and want to investigate. That being said if you are wanting to go here and sit outside and relax that will not happen as the road noise is too load for that. But for a short stop or a couple of days its not bad especially if you will be gone most of the time. The Wifi was not good at all. If the network there had a handful of people on it the connection would drop or be so slow it was unusable. After walking the property and seeing how they have installed the wifi it is easy to see why it sucks. They are beaming wifi between towers to spread it around the park. They could have ran a few cables between the poles and had much much better park wifi that actually works well. Sadly even they have good wifi gear installed even they just need a little different setup or better back-haul radios between the towers if you have to keep it wireless. The campground does have long term sites toward the back and it is very rough getting into some of those sites from the looks of it.
The staff are great but the park needs some major re-investing into the facilities and grounds. The wifi needs improved especially since they have no cable available. If those things happened it would be worth 51...
Read moreThis is my first time i have written a review, the first time i have felt inclined to do so. Although the employee we spoke with on phone was kind and helpful as she could be, the campground itself and its owner were beyond disappointing. Having traveled around the country from Montana, we were stopping overnight with our 28' Airstream travel trailer, and therefore not interested in unhooking (plus it was raining). we were assured on the phone that we could fit in a number of sites, but that was not true. we even tried some big rig pull-thrus, however, none of the sites were level and the big sites were so off that the other units were up on piles of 2x4s or wheels off the ground completely thanks to their levelers. so after trying probably 6 different sites, trying to get remotely level we settled on one just in time to get a shower before bed. these restrooms were so filthy that i almost refused to take my child in there for fear he'd touch something and contract a bacterial infection. piles of used q-tips, feminine products, wads of hair and other filth were piled in corners of each shower stall and that's in addition to the general mud slick overall. horrifying. that's both women's and men's bathrooms in same condition. this was not one days' worth of muck, but many. the next morning we were greeted at our site by an employee asking if we had paid and confirming that we'd do so before leaving. when checking out, we complained about the state of restrooms to a different employee than had just "greeted" us with payment request. she looked at the current state of the restrooms and agreed that the restrooms were unacceptable ("appalled" i believe was her word), and informed us that the usual cleaning person did not show that morning due to illness in family. we all agreed this was forgivable, and also agreed this seemed worse than one missed cleaning. she suggested we call the owner because she could not grant us a refund or discount for our troubles and concerns. we called and left the owner a message. no return call. a month later we call again, and the owner, michael way, remembers our complaint after a brief rehash. he remembers because he was the one who came to our site looking for payment. my husband asks why didn't he identify himself and he says because he didn't have to. my husband suggests a refund and mr. way declined, and i quote: "I'm not in the business of renting bathrooms, i'm in the business of renting campsites, and you stayed in my campsite." my husband asked if he should continue his concerns with good sam, the health department, and american express and mr. way said "do what you want because you're nothing but a jerk' and hung up. this is a man who has a christian quote about the responsibilities of an innkeeper painted on his wall. my suggestion: give your vacation money to...
Read moreUPDATE: I heard back from the owner regarding my concerns and it validates my point of why I will never step foot on this campground again! The owner tried to justify their unprofessionalism by saying they did nothing wrong and that I was in the wrong. I get it, I should not have drove around the campground without inquiring first (I still think this is weird, because no other campground has ever had an issue with this) However, their is a much professional and friendlier approach to letting me know. Do yourself the favor and continue up the road to a much friendlier, nicer, quieter campground. There are plenty!
My wife and I have been long time KOA campers and have stayed at several KOA's throughout North and South Carolina and have always had great customer service and enjoyed our stays. That changed this past Sunday night (12/30/18). My wife and I just purchased a new camper and wanted to do a "trial" run with our new camper and go somewhere close to home. We live in Greensboro, NC and decided to stay close to home and try the KOA here in Greensboro. When I made my reservation, I spoke with a lady in the KOA office and asked her if I could choose a site that was open upon arrival to the campground. She said that was fine. When we arrived at the campground, we drove around the loop to see what site we wanted to stay in. When I pulled back around to the main office, I was quickly approached by a little man, with a BIG attitude on a golf cart. Before I could even say hello, he started yelling loudly at me asking if I could read while pointing at a sign that said "all campers must check in at the office". I explained to him that I was just making a loop to find a site that we wanted. He again yelled "I DON'T CARE!" He continued yelling at me being very rude, unprofessional, and very disrespectful. At this point, I knew that I did not want to stay at this campground, so I told him I would like a full refund. I met him in the office and he continued yelling at me over the counter while there were other customers present in the office. I asked him if he was the owner of the campground and he said "NO" I asked if I could have the owners name and he said "NO". He did tell me his name is Andy Slain. I told him that I would be contacting the corporate office to find that information. Here I am today writing this review as a very disappointed, long time KOA customer. I would like to speak with the owner of this KOA or someone at a corporate level as this was the worst customer service I have received in...
