Great campground for tent campers. NO ELECTRICITY means no mansions-on-wheels pulling up and popping up a satellite antenna that whines all night searching for their DirecTV satellite. No TV blaring Fox News all night because they drank their selves to sleep with the finger on the volume button. No listening to the whirr of AC or heater all night while the temperature is ideal with a light breeze. No hearing the wife yelling backup directions. No hearing an hour of "leveling" issues being addressed with electric drills turning lifting mechanisms. No flashing red-white-blue ropelights spoiling the view of the night sky. No listening to dogs barking inside the RV while the occupants are at the local casino for six hours. Just the sound of the wild mixed with a little background noise from the highway about a mile away. But traffic is light after ten pm.
Enough editorializing. Seriously, the campground is run by the National Park Service. There's a heated showerhouse that is clean with hot water and good water pressure. The Buffalo National River is visible from some campsites and an easy walk. There are well placed tent pads with good drainage. Campsites are laid out in a circle with ample space between most of them. And - usage is light - at least in the fall when I camped there. This is the heart of the Ozarks with an undammed river in an area where almost all major rivers are dammed for flood control and energy generation. This is a jewel of a campground with usual national facility low prices and senior discount rates.
It really is a treat to camp away from the 'bring home away from home' RV crowd. Camping...
Read moreThere was no campground host at all the whole weekend we were there. So I was glad we brought wood for the whole weekend with us! The first night we were there, we had a terrifying experience and bc if it I will never come back to this campsite! Around 10pm, some officers crept into the campground with the lights off on their truck (VERY dangerous for campers walking to and from the bathrooms in the dark!!). An armed officer wearing a bulletproof vest approached our campsite on foot with his hand on the holster of his gun to let us know that quiet hours were in effect and we needed to turn off our music. While he was speaking to us, hand on holster the entire time and shining a light around our campsite, we realized another officer had silently snuck around our vehicle to quietly surround us and was watching us silently from the other end of our campsite. We were six friends sitting around a campfire drinking beers and listening to some music celebrating a friend’s birthday. I can admit we needed to turn our music off and respect quiet hours, but we were not being rowdy or a threat. All those officers needed to do was drive thru and friendly ask us to turn off our music. Instead they acted like they were doing a sting operation and dangerous criminals!! We were treated like criminals and felt very threatened by their armed presence. I would absolutely not recommend anyone ever staying here. Armed police officers should not be threatening people who are coming to the community to financially support your parks and canoe rentals, and generally enjoy the gorgeous nature and...
Read moreStayed here for Labor day Weekend.... The campground was great, facilities were great, campsite layout was great, but our neighbors were not great. There needs to be someone controlling the noise after "quiet hours". The people next to us showed up around 10PM and had at least 15 people camping with them. They set up camp, started playing music, and drinking until the sun came up the next morning. They had pitbull dogs that were not on leashes and kept coming into our campground which would cause our dogs to go crazy. Our dogs were on leashes. I was half tempted to demand our $50 for the campsite back the next morning, but all we wanted to do was pack our camp up and get the hell out of there. I will never camp at this campsite again due to that experience. I am not against drinking, having a good time, and listening to music, but the inconsideration those people had for everyone around them was the most disrespectful thing I have personally experienced camping. If you are going to charge people $50 to sleep in a tent then you should definitely enforce the rules you have in place for everyone; not just make sure people are paying. What was supposed to be a peaceful camping experience for my family turned in to a miserable night filled with loud music, drunk people, and dogs all night long. The worst experience camping I...
