We really enjoyed our stay here. Overall I would recommend staying here but I think there should be some expectation management. I had a hard time rating this at 5 stars. It's certainly not bad, but I wouldn't say I absolutely loved it.
Pros: Under 10 minutes to Volcano National Park King bed and a queen with a pull out sofa. Fully stocked house. Has cleaning supplies, paper towels, and even the smaller things like coffee filters. Plenty of exterior lighting to see your car if you need to access it in the dark. Washer and dryer on site. It's outside, but hey at least it's available.
Cons: No central heat or fireplace. There were 3 space heaters but honestly I didn't feel entirely comfortable running them all the time, especially since one of them had excessive heat damage to it. Yikes! No dishwasher. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to be able to run the dishes on high heat to give peace of mind that they are clean from the previous tenants usage.
Recommendation to the owners: Consider the cons listed, in addition consider some dehumidifiers as some of the furniture has gathered a bit of a smell over time. We misplaced a remote control and when looking under and behind furniture we found dirt and debris that has clearly collected over a lengthy...
Read moreWe had a good stay here for about 3 days recently. It's listed as a 3 star on Google but that's a stretch. Like most all lodging out here it's very bare bones.
It is technically a pretty fully kitchen but honestly lack a lot of what you need to make real meals in terms of utensils, spices, but will work for simple and basic stuff. I'm talking like ceramic knives and such, not much in terms of real cookware.
No HVAC but a small space heater than can barely keep up with cold nights, but it worked well enough. Laundry machine is shared with neighbor but works fine.
Service seemed good altho the only thing we actually asked for the entire trip was a single roll of Toilet Paper (we had been left just 1 for several days) and were ghosted, so we just rationed that TP like no tomorrow.
Location is good in that you can be in the park is 5-10 minutes. Food options around here people say are "good for how remote it is" but idk about that - most everything we ate was about 3x too costly and worse than I was expecting. If I did it again I'd probably stay closer to Hilo for better food options, even if it's a longer drive to the Park. The area is very quiet and creepily...
Read moreWe said there this past weekend and it is an excellent location for the National Park and Black sand beach! We have 5 kids (13, 10, 5, 6, baby). It was clean. Free parking. Excellent location. A full set of towels for each person. Super easy checking in! Excellent customer service. Pack N Play was all set up. It’s about a 5 minute drive from the National Park. Lava viewing with recent eruption was unforgettable! From door to door- night viewing lava at Devastation Point (including hike with littles) was about 1.5 hours. Kids looooved it!! My only suggestion is to put more silverware in the drawer. There were only 4 forks. Would stay again! Also the Thai food place that is in volcano was the best Thai food I’ve ever had! Place a call ahead order to skip the long line. Kids gobbled it up. Also the grocery stores close very early. So you might want to think about that if you have little kids and are coming in...
