I usually don’t write bad reviews but I am making an exception here. I want to be fair so I am writing a long and detailed review. Bottom line is we did not feel welcomed here and I do not recommend this B&B / inn. ||Location (3 stars)The gps had trouble finding the location the first time but worked well thereafter. It was a 5 or 10 minute drive to the shore. Restaurants were 15+ minutes away and most restaurants were closed by 4-6 pm. We did find a good Chinese restaurant Ono with good food but no atmosphere. ||Property (3 stars but would have been 5 if better maintained). The property is gated and we called the number provided and Marina opened the gate remotely. After parking the car we looked around for about 10 minutes before we found the lobby. No greeting at all. It would have been nice if Marina came out to greet us when we did not find her more quickly. When we met her and told her our difficulty she said didn’t you read our email. Not very accommodating.|There was a remote in the room to open the gate and we kept it in the car. It worked well. However the entry code supplied on the email for keypad entry was incorrect and would not open the gate when entered on the keypad. |When we got back at 7 pm one evening and 9 pm on a different evening all the lights were out on the property and lobby. It was pitch black and it was very hard for us to navigate our way to our room. We were the only guests there at the time. ||The room. (3 stars) Our room was facing the pool with a large glass door which was also the entry door. The air conditioning was not on so the room was very hot. The air conditioner was a small unit located high up at the ceiling so I had to step on a chair to turn it on. It was quite loud and was just adequate in cooling the room. The room was nice but full of little ants all over the counters and bathroom. The electric outlet on my side of the bed was about 5 feet away so bring a 10’ cord if you want to stay plugged in while laying down. There was a coffee maker. We had to take the toaster, paper towels, dish towel, etc from the next room (unoccupied) as it was not supplied in our room. There is no desk so I used my laptop on the dressing table. All in all the room was not really satisfactory as it was full of ants.||Pool (5 stars)The pool area was drop dead gorgeous. The pool was very nice and there was a sauna and jacuzzi which we did not use. The foliage was amazing. ||Breakfast. (1 star) Upon arrival, Marina told us breakfast would be ready for us in the kitchen each morning. Breakfast was a very large bowl of oatmeal with a sliced banana and a small amount of frozen fruit on top. There was no milk in the frig to add to the oatmeal and could not find sugar. I got sugar from an unoccupied room as we did not have in our room. There was no coffee made in the kitchen either. We wanted to eat in the pool area and there was a table there which we had breakfast at every day. We carried our ‘breakfast’ down the stairs to the pool. The table was dirty (cup rings, etc) and was not cleaned at all during our stay. No fresh fruit. We did notice the one time we were in the kitchen a big box of green grapes from costco- and were told there was no fresh fruit. Just the oatmeal and a frozen smoothie. Marina just disappeared. Not very hospitable. |Btw. Breakfast was the only time we saw anyone. Omg! The owner did make us an omelette the next day. That is when she berated us for being in the kitchen.||Hospitality. (0 stars). We met the owner on day two who was in the kitchen. When my wife went up the stairs to the kitchen to get our breakfast the owner was there. She asked my wife ‘who are you?’ No hello or nice to meet you or any or any other greeting. I went up a few minutes later and introduced myself. She said her name was ‘Doctor' so and so’. Again not very friendly. When I went into the frigidare to get milk she said the kitchen was off limits and was invading her privacy or something like that. Marina was also in the kitchen and did not mention that she gave us permission to be in kitchen. btw, there was no milk in the fridge. ||All in all, we felt very unwelcome and will not be back nor recommend this Inn. The great reviews were from when another innkeeper carol and kevin were there- they left the...
Read moreMy friends and I booked two rooms separately for 3 nights at the end of April. I liked how private and secure the property felt. It is very clean from garbage and most dust. I like that there are coffee maker, microwave, and tea kettle, and refrigerator. The provided toiletries were of unknown origin and very watered down and drying. I had to buy my own because I was uncomfortable with it. However the Moana room has many unsealed spots including the random door to the common room where MANY geckos, millipedes, and others crawled in. It is also 2.5 feet away from the lawn and flower beds where we saw a baby centipede. The other pests are mostly harmless but I was deathly afraid of a centipede. I was told by staff that they do not use any chemicals to treat for pests and to not touch the centipede and that this is normal in a jungle environment. I would have not booked if I knew this. I felt like this was a poor excuse since I'd just stayed in the literal jungle in Volcano area. Friend's room was fine except a giant palm sized spider one night. I had to beg them to change my room for the rest of my nights. There I'd only see geckos and millipedes in the bathroom only though some windows were missing glass panels and impossible to close. There is no breakfast, and there is no room service. You may contact the staff during your stay through two phone numbers. My stay would have been relaxing if it weren't for the pests. I stayed awake the first night nodding on and off to see a new pest on the floor...
Read moreFrom the photos posted online, we were sure that the Luana Inn would be beautiful. However, the photos don’t do this lovely place justice. We stayed with Erin & Ken for 9 nights in June 2014 when we visited the Big Island to get married at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. They truly treated us as family in their home. The view from our room was spectacular – we loved to watch the sun set nightly from the pool or hot tub. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and Erin even picked us a white pineapple on our last day. Our hosts made sure that we had anything we needed – snorkel gear, towels, a sack breakfast on a day we had to leave before breakfast was served. They anticipated every need that we might have. John had a surgery prior to the trip and we were concerned about his comfort in sleeping, as sometimes he has to sleep in a sitting position. Erin & Ken made sure John had a recliner available in the room upon our arrival. The breakfasts that they created for us were the absolute best meals we had the entire time we were on the island. Erin & Ken knew every great place to visit – the touristy places as well as the more private attractions. We love children and found their boys to be very entertaining, and we enjoyed visiting their dog, Charlie. The Inn was very private and secluded, which was exactly what we wanted. We are so thankful we chose the Luana Inn instead of a giant resort with millions of other guests, and we can’t...
