Just returned from a 2 night stay on the big island. The owners were on the mainland, but Kala was Uh-MAZE-ing! She welcomed us with so much Aloha Spirit and gave us a tour of the fruit trees behind the house! She presented the wonderful breakfast and shared that she made it fruit-forward because of our conversation upon arrival. I didn't know the owners would not be there, but there was a note on our door when we arrived, letting us know how to get in touch with Kala. Honestly, our 2 nights here truly enhanced our visit to the island: Kala was such a warm, welcoming, informative and helpful hostess, that between her and the location (on a lush and fruit tree filled property, walking distance to the boiling pots and an easy drive to Volcano Park and the adorable town of Hilo) we can't imagine having stayed anywhere else. While the rooms were small, they were quite clean and if you are going to just hang out, I can't imagine why you would stay in your room when the lanai is so much...
Read moreThe place was great BUT there was no air conditioning. If this isn’t a problem for you, you should definitely stay here. The first night was bad for our family since we usually sleep in 65°F temperatures but the room was probably in the 80°’s. The nights after that weren’t that bad because we were adjusting (We stayed in July). The location is great, not too far from downtown and also very close (walkable) to a beautiful waterfall. The breakfast was amazing and very healthy. Fresh fruit (from her garden!), yogurt, fresh pastries and amazing smoothies. The girl in charge probably wakes up super early to prepare breakfast for her guests and our family really were very appreciative that she would do that. The rooms were big and cozy. Big windows let the breeze in every night. The girl was SUPER nice and helped us plan our trip. The rooms don’t supply guests with lotion but she was nice enough to give us some. Overall, great place to stay, IF you don’t mind sleeping with no air...
Read moreThe accommodations were lovely, comfortable and clean but the best selling point about Old Hawaiian are the breakfasts!! Served communally (but a small group--there are only 3 rooms at this B&B), the hostess/owner prepares simple but uber-healthy and beautifully presented foods. Every day there is a choice of two breads (monkey bread for the win!) served alongside a hard-boiled egg, yogurt and THE MOST AMAZING fruits you have ever eaten (most from her own backyard trees). She explains how to eat the more mysterious ones (suck off the cotton-candy like fibers of one, eat the rind of another). ||Lovely backyard that drops off to a cliff overlooking a river. Great location with ease of access to all things on the Eastern side of the Big Island. The room was spacious with both a bed and a bed-settee as well as comfortable chairs. Updated bathroom with a...
