What a cute place to stay! The hostess Marissa was super kind and informative. First of all, this was my husband, and I first time saying in a hostel. We had a timeshare booked, but we were in Tauyna day early so we needed a place to stay for one night so we thought we would try it. I will tell you when you first drive up to the property. I was a little worried.. It seemed a little sketchy. Just the whole neighborhood seemed sketchy. I had never seen volcano lands like that before. I guess after the volcano destroyed all the homes there the people who built Baacke had to be completely off grid because there’s no utilities.
Once we step inside, we’re really pleasantly surprised. I mean it was no Marriott or Hilton, but it was everything that you need. It had all the basics. You do have to share the bathroom and showers, but they were very clean. They were only a few other guests there and they were quite pleasant to interact with . There’s a shared kitchen and lots of shared sitting areas to hang out. I met a lady from Japan and she taught me how to make some yummy Japanese foods in the kitchen. We met another family from marathon with their very sweet 10 year old boy. My impression was that hostels were places where people went who were on the outputs of society people who wanted to be able to smoke pot and not have anyone say anything to them. I definitely was wrong. It was very respectful and there were rules posted about the expectations of the guest. My husband and I felt safe. * I also wanted to mention all the cool murals that they had painted. They had an area with games a TV watching area a stargazing porch on the roof, it’s really like...

Last year I spent a couple days of my first trip here and thought it was such a unique experience that I stayed the entire duration of my trip there this time. Truly beyond the "end of the road on some Barren, desolate lava fields. It's an off grid kind of experience, runs off solar power and rain water usually, at times they need to use their generator. They do have wifi if needed, but truly is a perfect place to unwind and relax. Because of the building materials not overly soundproof, which pros is the sound of the rain is neat and relaxing and adds to the experience, cons is you can heat everything, but overall people are all quite respectful. Had to be aware of the ferral cats, random cows on the roads/ ditches and the wild boars when driving at night to get there, you very much need a car to get here The star gazing from this place though is absolutely spectacular and the people you meet while traveling this way is pretty cool. Pretty near to a cool little market on Saturday mornings, Kehena black sand beach and also got to check out the Pohoiki Hot Ponds (natural hot tubs heated by lava basically) at Isaac Hale Beach Park. Marissa the manager is super welcoming and kind, great to talk to,and always has great suggestions of things to do in the area. This kind of accomodation isn't for everyone, but if this type of thing suits you, truly you will have a truly unique awesome...
Read moreThis is the most unique hostel I've ever stayed at, a free-flowing, happy-go-lucky plywood palace built atop the lava. Come stay a while, enjoy the morning yoga and the evening pizza, then wax philosphical on the stargazing tower over a beer or three. The crowd is electic and international, your host Marissa is a tour-de-force of local knowledge wrapped in a calm and friendly demeanor, and Dan's clan (who owns the place) runs a tight ship while still being completely approachable. Leo the black cat would love to share the hammock with you, and Girlie the lava dog (a neighbor's, but hangs out all the time) will happily accompany you on a trek to the cliff's edge, where the lava meets the sea.
We spent a week here in one of the private rooms on the upper floor, the perfect mix of community and solitude against a backdrop of whimsical murals and gentle trade winds. Absolutely loved our stay, and can't wait to go back.
They are currently building a meditation room, a gym, and several more private rooms. Already there's a well-equipped kitchen, a great tiki bar / living area / TV patio, two bathrooms with showers, an additional outdoor shower, and an extra toilet.
Skip the soulless resorts and stay...
