Overall our stay was good, but I would like to see a few changes before we will stay again or even recommend the campground to other campers.
The sites are not level and require the use of levelers. Not just one row, but the max allowed to be used on one side. This was not just an issue at our campsite, but our friends sites as well, and almost all of the sites throughout the campground. This is something that I assume they are fully aware of given the number of levelers sold in the camp store. We have been to several campgrounds and toured their stores, but have never seen this many levelers available for purchase or used throughout the campground.
There are areas where the grass does not appear to be maintained around campsites including near the cabins. I am not sure if this is on purpose or if there was not enough time to cut the grass before the Memorial weekend rush. I understand that we are camping, but also maintaining the property throughout is important, including the area between campsites in the wooded part, especially the cabins.
We noticed several campers (travel trailers, 5th wheels, popups) having trouble getting into their sites because the roads are narrow and having to maneuver around trees. I understand we are in the wooded section and yes that means trees, but it maybe time to consider removing some of them to widen the road and make getting in and out of the sites easier. We watched several campers upon leaving today having to back across multiple sites and even into the field just to be able to leave.
As a mother of an 11 month old I appreciate the child swings, but found it strange that both swings were missing the belt that secures the child into the swing. The one child swing looks like someone rigged it just so there are two swings as it is extremely high off the ground and not level! The other one is OK, but missing the 2nd part of the safety belt. Also I think the chains could be replaced.
I would have thought #1 and #4 would have been inspected before the "unofficial" weekend that kicks off the camping season to make sure everything looks good and is in proper order.
The website states they have cable, but note this does mean every site has cable. We were extremely surprised by this. The website should read only select sites have cable.
I would like to see them improve the check in process. There is room to create two-three lanes for people to park their campers and check in. If someone was checking in and decided to shop the store this could hold up the entire line as there is not much room to get by right now. Adding lanes or parking would allow other vehicles to get by and possible keep the line moving a little quicker.
Add a sign about the speed bump/dip for both traffic coming into the campground...
Read moreI really wanted to like it here. We' d heard from multiple people that we had to go to Granite Hill. Overall rating is "meh", it was ok. The "resort" itself is enormous, there are A LOT of sites for campers, tents, and even cabins spread around this place. It's really huge, I think a few sights seemed squeezed in to maximize use, but really big and spread out overall.
As for the "resort", maybe 20 years ago it was something to see but today its in need of some serious capital investment. More than few sites were overgrown with grass and weeds. What was most shocking is the place was mostly empty the weekend in July '25 we were there.
Mini golf needs a major overhaul on the turf, benches and bridges. This course would rival any beach mini golf course if it could get the face lift it desperately needs. Also this is the first camping resort mini golf we had to pay to use, most places we've stayed it's included.
As for the paddle boats and kayaks on the pond. This would have been great some years ago I'm sure. There were just 4 paddle boats, and only 1 was in working condition. The other 3 had missing seats or broken back rests. All 4 were filthy inside. Kayaks are old, my 8 yr old daughter and I took out the only 2 person kayak/canoe they had and within 5 minutes we're sinking. Get back to shore and realize there's a hole in the bottom-back of it.
The fishing pond was the most fun for our 3 boys. They caught (and released) all kinds of fish in there. They had a blast with this. Ponds need bubblers or something to move the water around and keep the algae under control.
The pool was nice, surrounding chairs and tables in good shape. The pool could use a good bottom scrubbing, but otherwise was great and relaxing.
Shout out to Wayne, this is 1 very busy man. All weekend we saw him working his tail off all around the grounds. From mowing, chain sawing, pool skimming, and driving for the hay rides. Even saw him guide the AAA truck to a site for a couple that were locked out of their car, and he got a golf cart to take a kid back to his site that got a bloody nose. This guy was all over the place and never stopped working. He talked to everyone and provided any help that was needed.
The camp store is large and well stocked with just about anything you might need for the weekend. And a bunch of junk the kids might "need" too.
It's a spacious and quiet campground, just needs a lot of investment to modernize and bring it back to its former glory. Please add cable or wifi and include mini golf for...
Read moreMy first visit here was in 2006 and my most recent visit was 2018.
Your perspective of this campground will be skewed dependent upon your needs & expectations - and I will try to explain this point within my review.
The cons: there haven't been any capital upgrades here [that I've noticed] since my first visit here in 2006. It's a bit run down and the bathrooms near the entrance are single person male & female toilets - no showers. The ceiling of the general store section of the main office has an area of low-hanging drywall from obvious water damage that occurred in the distant past (not recent but was never cosmetically repaired). Despite the "resort" price, there is no trash pick-up (it doesn't bother me to haul my own trash but for the "resort" name & price I typically get that service everywhere else I visit).
The pros: other than the Bluegrass Festivals and Bike Week, it never seems to be crowded and in fact during a visit in early June (the week after Memorial Day) it was quite "sleepy". The full hook-up 50-amp sites are ample size (though some have low-hanging limbs if you have a 5th wheel - bring your own tree limb clippers for on-the-spot maintenance). The location is nice - in Fairfield west of Gettysburg and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The staff is friendly and overall the campground is [very] laid back. The General Store has a nice selection of grocery necessities, souvenir trinkets and camping/RV supplies. For me, the biggest pro is the water - it smells clean & tastes fresh WITHOUT the stinky sulphur smell! There is no fear of "rotten eggs" invading my fresh water tank and following me to my next camp site nor does it require me to (re)sanitize my water lines after a stay here - this saves me a lot of time & effort after I get home. This fact alone increases my view/perspective of the campground by at least +1 star.
In summary: if you tent camp or need/expect facilities, this probably isn't the place for you as there are nicer nearby campgrounds with "newer" facilities (I have tent camped here in the distant past) - with that perspective, this would likely be a middle-of-the-road 2.5 stars. If you are self-contained, are not looking for your entertainment to be found inside the campground (other than during the Bluegrass Festival) & you want a laid-back atmosphere with a beautiful countryside (pluses for the bikers during the annual Bike Week), I highly recommend it with my 4-star [clean, fresh smelling/tasting water]...
