If your looking for a campground near the beach then this is the campground for you because you are literally not much more than 100 yards from the beach at any point once you pull through the gate as it is located on a narrow peninsula with the St John's river on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other side!
Also if you're a 4wheel drive enthusiast that loves the sand then once you drop your camper on any one of the very nice sized sites you can drive your vehicle (Jeep Wrangler in our case) farther into the park and right into the beach of the Atlantic Ocean, just be careful not to drive right into the ocean as there are no boundaries to stop you from driving into the surf and I did not measure it but I would guess that there is about a mile of beach access that you can drive on.
Back to the campground, we booked site # 41 and not only was the veiw of water right out or front window but it was plenty big enough for our 38' class a motorhome with lost of room to park our jeep, bikes and scooters with still have lots of room for the picnic table, fire ring and lounge chairs and still plenty of room to set up games or even a good sized tent.
A couple of other bonuses to note, The bathroom and showers are newer and appear to be clean and well maintained. There is a cool little museum on the property of thing found in the area as well several little shelters with picnic tables near the shoreline for having a gathering Also did I mention lots of sandy beach line for laying out, building sand castles, swimming, surfing, and wind surfing and this is out of the boundaries for vehicles so you don't have to look both ways for cars before crossing the sandš.
Now for the cons... This is a city park as well so the beach is open to non campers during the day. Dogs are not allowed on any beach but there are plenty of areas to walk them in veiw of the water. There are no full hookup sites but there is a dump station on site centrally located near the center of the campground as well as a separate fresh water station for filling your fresh water tank. There are a lot of protected dunes around the perimeter of the campground so you do have to walk or to drive to an access point but it not to fare and like I said you can there is about a mile of pristine sandy beach line that you can drive on so if you don't want to walk just load you beach chairs and toys into your car and drive right down into the surf if you really want to. One last con is that our first night the winds were gusting up to 30mph and though there were people I don't know that I would have wanted to be in a tent or a popup camper as there is very...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI am not from the area and decided to stay at this campground specifically because of the close beach access. Overall, not impressed at all. First, the bathrooms are repulsive, and Iām not saying this lightly. I have camped my entire life at multiple, multiple campgrounds and these bathrooms were by far the worst I have experienced. They are dirty, wet, sandy, trashcans are overflowing and smell horrific. I believe they may have been cleaned at most once per day (which as you can imagine is not nearly enough with 100s-1000s of people using them per day considering the bathrooms are open for public use to beach goers). I couldnāt bring myself to shower more than one night in their shower facilities. There is standing muddy water on the ground, no where to put your stuff, and not enough space to get dried off. There was hair and dirt literally everywhere. Another con, there is absolutely no privacy camping here, especially on the weekends. It is so busy and loud with non-campers going to the beach. The only peace and quiet you will get is past 8pm.
The reason I gave it 2 stars is because the views are amazing and the price is very reasonable. There is water on all sides of the campground. The ocean is so close and itās really nice that campers can stay on the beach later than the public. The sites are decently sized and you arenāt right on top of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI brought my 6 year old daughter for her first camping trip. I'm somewhere in between 3 and 4 stars. The reason I'm going to lean more towards 3 stars is the crowded level. Obviously I did know what I was getting into based off how busy the park gets despite the camping aspect but there is also quite a few campers slapped into one area so keep that in mind. I'm sure there are some better spots don't get me wrong but it's not a very secluded feel at all. That being said there are definitely still a lot of pros so don't take my review as the gold standard because your needs and wants certainly may be different.
Pros: Electric at campsite Picnic table and fire pit Bathrooms and showers relatively close Playground and limited hours nature center to entertain little ones Beaches and areas to go fishing and great views by the water
Cons: Crowded and noisy with cars driving by blaring music on their way back and forth from the beach Very windy and no cover from the sun Busy campground at night so be prepared for car doors closing and people starting them in the middle of the night Seagulls (or flying rats as I like to call them) are very aggressive here because of all the people. They were stealing my bait as I cast lines and harassing other people on the beach and by...
