It was a good experience.. firewood’s for $5 and ice bags for $2, firewood comes with two small fire starter, but it is better to buy small fire starter cubes from Walmart.. you will need two of those to get the fire going for one bag of firewood. We ran out of fire starters but were able to use ample of match sticks and twigs to get the fire started..
We had a helping neighbor to set up our tent, there are no phone signals there, but I did get signal to check weather on the other side of the road as rain was predicted on Sunday, also I used it for one video call, but then I never got to open any emails or google map.. after all, that’s the point of camping to be away from digital world..
For cooking we got Coleman’s stove and fuel, 1 fuel butane canister of 8oz was sufficient for two days/nights to cook veggie dishes.. it’s better to get a portable grill or stove as cooking on top of fire pit grill can become straining or messy.. we used it for paneer bbq and for marshmallows… it rained on second night of our stay, almost whole camping site vacated at that point but we chose to stay, our Ozark tent from Walmart worked extremely well.. Used igloo 28 quarts cooler and ice never melted until end of our two nights camping it melted slightly.. we only kept cooler in the car at night when weather is cooler, during day time we kept the cooler inside tent..
1st day stay on Saturday was crowded, On Sunday campsite was almost empty with couple of tents and RVs.. Park rangers were professional and very good.. checkin was very easy..
Rental Kayak was not open both days at lake waramaug so that was one disappointment, it is owned and operated by one company which is available in housatonic park, but there you can Kayak on river rather than lake and must register before 2 pm.. it takes hours to kayak up and down that river.. Many got their own inflatable kayak at waramaug..
There is an extremely tiny beach which gets crowded by visitors.. there are visitor restrooms too which is cleaner than the camping site restrooms mainly because people use it horribly.. Overall a very...
Read moreNice park on a pretty lake. I stopped by on the weekend when the campground seemed almost full but camped during the week. This week looked quite different than the weekend I was here. Plenty of room to roam about, a quiet lake and a much less traveled road around the lake which makes for a more enjoyable bicycle peddle. I would not recommend bicycling the road around the lake with young children as the road is narrow and shared with motor vehicles. Also, lots of narrow bends in the road. Campground and facilities are well maintained. Sites are WOW, large. There's a short walking/hiking trail along the backside. I camped here specifically to paddleboard but, sadly, no one from the rental company showed up at the rental station on any of the three days I was here. Their posted days and hours indicate they should have been open and available to rent. To clarify, although the rental company operates from the state park, the state park is NOT responsible for the kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals. Misty was managing the park during my stay. She was professional, friendly, kind and helpful. Thanks Misty, for adding to my positive camping experience. You will quickly learn...no cell service, no internet access, NO JOKE! Unplug and...
Read moreLake Waramaug was a nice little campsite. It was close enough to NYC that we could do the whole trip while the little ones were napping.
The campsite was very well manicured witu multiple bathroom and shower buildings. The bathrooms and showers were neat and stocked with soap and toilet paper too. The showers had really strong water pressure and they were free, but there weren't too many, one per gender per bathroom building. I could see that being an issue if all the sites were occupied.
The campsites we're rather large with their own fire pit, picnic table and enough spaces for a whole bunch of tents. I don't think there's a limit on tents, just people per site.
The campsite sells wood, ice and has a breakfast place which has the standard fare as well as ice cream and such, which was very nice. We were even able to buy D batteries from them for our sole air pump.
The area around the lake was very beautiful as well with big lake houses and plenty of retirees taking their toys out for a ride, be it a shiny new trike or a 1930s pickup truck which addee some charm to the area. It just felt like everyone in the area was having a good time.
We'll be going again, this time with some inflatable toys for the kids and...
