In a nutshell: Our stay was wonderful! We slept well...ate well...left refreshed!
For those interested in more detail: the setting, house and room were clean, cozy and charming. Our bed was comfortable, linens luxurious, and the hostess, Liz, was exceptionally responsive, helpful, warm and welcoming. In addition, her food was delicious, satisfying and perfectly prepared. Even dishes I wondered if my husband would like, he ate with relish. ; )
There's a comfortable area for reading and playing games, with several provided. There are also 4 bikes generously available for use when weather allows, though I'm not sure how easy it is to find a good place to use them...? There's a charming stream thru the backyard backed by woods that make the backyard view beautiful. We especially enjoyed the trail walk in the nearby Sanctuary Woods and walking the main street, 8th. We were impressed that they seem to have weathered the ravages of COVID so well- I don't remember seeing a single shop vacant and even on a cold, dreary weekend there were a lot of people browsing! Plus, a week ahead of the Tulip Fest, the flower displays everywhere were beautiful! I also enjoyed the Downtown Antique Store and poking around some of the stores on 8th...my husband, not so much, but that's no shock. : )
If you're looking for food recommendations: we missed out, but heard several sing the praises of 76 and The Windmill. We tried Crust 54's Chicago style pizza on 8th, but were disappointed as the crust seemed really dry like a cracker and the filling wasn't that flavorful. Maybe a different variety or their regular crust would have been better-- it is rated well. We also tried Crazy Horse, another local favorite--a casual steakhouse/restaurant. They have a quirky fun tradition of people sticking bills up all over the place which are then donated to local people and organizations in need. The service was great, but we made the mistake of ordering their equivalent of our Texas Roadhouse favorite: a steak/shrimp combo with an add-on house salad. It was good...but not as good as TR so left us disappointed. We would go back, but would probably try something else.
The lighthouse is sort of a non-event-- mostly inaccessible and not very attractive to my eye, but on a nice day the beach across from it with it's playground for kids, would be enjoyable. For us though it was drizzling and extremely windy with a cold, biting edge, so it wasn't pleasant. The lake drive to it, though, is fascinating with the variety of architecture and settings along the way. We stopped for the famous Tommy Turtle at Captain Sundae enroute. It's pricey, but most things are now I guess. It was just over $7 for a large, which we split. Really could have gone with a medium and been satisfied. The toasted nuts were great, as were all the ingredients, but since the chocolate is kept at 130 and I don't like melted ice cream, from hindsight, we should have tried something else. Lots of help available! We stopped by the windmill, but my husband felt $12 was too much, so we drove on. People at Cottonwood who did go agreed with my husband. They liked the Holland museum, however, and felt it was worth the $7 admission. Since my husband doesn't like museums, we passed on that as well.
If it was nicer, my husband could have enjoyed the golf course, which would have been a highlight, I'm sure. Even so, we still found things we both enjoyed and the Cottonwood Inn was a great place to have as our base. ...

Rooms/Cleanliness: Since we booked last minute, the only available room was the one with the bathroom in the hallway. Although not ideal, the bathroom was literally 3 steps away and it wasn't as bad as we thought! Everything was EXTREMELY clean which made us feel very comfortable. The only thing we didn't like were the pillows and bed (we prefer more firmness but that's just personal preference).
Service: Liz was nothing short of amazing! She was so kind, hospitable, and truly has a gift in making her guests feel welcomed. She helped us plan things to do in the area, and made sure we felt comfortable as well as asking us frequently if we needed anything. Her breakfast was also SO good! Very fresh and tasty!
Location: Just 10 minutes outside of downtown Holland via car which was perfect because it felt remote enough to be relaxing and quiet but close enough to shops, restaurants, etc. We also drove to Saugatuck (around a 15-20 min drive depending where you're going).
Overall, I would DEFINITELY recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Holland. It was the perfect reset my husband and I needed from the craziness of life (and the hustle and bustle...
Read moreIf you’re visiting Holland, no need to look any further because this is absolutely the place to stay. This is the most charming, quaint, and cozy bed and breakfast. The rooms are spacious and equipped with everything you need and the beds are very comfortable. Little touches such as aromatic soap and room spray, cold water bottles, etc. really add a feeling of luxuriousness. If you don’t want to sit in your room, there are plenty of cute nooks and even games and books available for use. I can’t wait to go back in the winter and sit by the fireplace. Booking was a breeze and making late arrival accommodations was quick and easy. But the best part of this place is the owner, Liz. She is so sweet and down to earth. She genuinely cared that my husband and I had a great stay and enjoyed our time in Holland. She shared a map with us that was very helpful in getting around and gave us plenty of recommendations. And her breakfasts were absolutely delicious and truly the best bites we had in Holland - no exaggeration. The Cottonwood Inn B&B is a true gem and I cannot...
