We chose this place as a "halfway" overnight stop on our way further south with the intention of visiting Natural Bridge Park the following morning (and to get a little break from our long drive). Reading the reviews, it seemed hit or miss but we remained optimistic. Due to our driving schedule we arrived later in the evening so the main building looked very grand all lit up prompting me to be very excited to see our room. Just a note We had our pup with us and the room we got was an outdoor entrance along the side (I think they are called Veranda Rooms) so I cannot speak to the rooms inside the main building.
There is no elevator which doesnt bother us, however the old metal staircase on the side closest to where we parked that seemed VERY unsafe. No one instructed us where the other staircase to the 3rd floor was so we had to do a little walking to figure it out. The stairwell was quite gross with litter and the windows and screens were in serious need of repair. I was a little wary after all that but was still hoping to be impressed (or at least content) when we got to our room.
Opening the door I was extremely underwhelmed. It definitely felt like it couldve been a lot nicer with some TLC but clearly it wasnt getting the attention it deserved. Walking in, I had to keep reminding myself that we had been driving for about 8-9 hours and we just needed a place to rest so "this would do". I will say contrary to what I've read on here, the AC created an arctic feel and was definitely in working order so no issues there. The bed was ok, there seemed to be no evidence of stains that we could find, but the furniture and over all "look" of the room was quite dingy. The chairs were covered in stains and looked like someone found them on the side of the road after sitting out there for a while and other furniture looked distressed but not in the "trendy" way. Our window didnt lock and the front windows are about waist high off the walkway/balcony...so that cause me to sleep with one eye open. The bathroom looked very dated and the tub was pretty gross.
All of this though could've been completely overlooked (and I just wouldve chalked this place up to a bad choice and skipped writing a review) had I not gotten up around 3am to find out the water had been shut off. For hours we had no sink or a working toilet. Finally around 6:30-7am the toilet would finally flush again.....AND then it flushed for about 20 minutes straight creating a toilet vortex. Obviously it couldve been used during this but who seriously wants to sit on a "toilet blackhole" with it whooshing against your back end? Not I. We called the desk at this point after being a bit fed up, and they told us it could be fixed with pulling the handle upwards (it did not), then said they would send someone over...well when it FINALLY stopped we called them back and told them we would be leaving soon so someone could check it out then (who knows if they did or not).
I really dont like writing negative reviews and try my best to only review places I enjoy to spread the word... if I dont like a place I just usually never go back... but I felt like people should have an idea of what they are getting when booking the outer rooms. This place is owned by Wyndham and they should definitely take better care of it. If it was a independently owned place I feel like our expectations and grievances wouldve been met with sincerity. When dealing with a corporation I feel like they consider you easily replaced.i want to express that this review is not geared towards the workers of this hotel, but more so the owners/upper management. I didnt personally deal with the front desk but my husband said they were friendly.
All in all it sort of served the purpose we needed it for as a quick stop over, but I couldn't imagine staying there multiple nights. I was pretty mad we paid what we did. The only true highlight and perk to this place was the proximity to Natural Bridge...which was gorgeous...so I'm giving it an extra star...
Read moreThis is the first review I have ever written for any establishment, but I felt it needed to be put out there for any future guests. After reading multiple reviews before our stay we decided to give NB hotel a chance. Mostly because we were in the area and needed a room last minute. Multiple reviews mentioned a lack of mask safety and I saw the hotel response to one saying their staff and guest safety was of utmost importance but they did not acknowledge that their staff would be reminded to wear their masks properly. When we arrived we were greeted by a front desk staff member with NO mask in sight. The doors had signs stating masks were required inside the hotel lobby, why do the staff who are interacting with guests not have to adhere to this? They do have a plexi glass in place but it isn’t fully enclosing so a mask was still expected and the appropriate response considering it shows a lot of respect toward your guests and their safety. Moving on, we went to the tavern on site that evening and the bar tender had her mask under her nose, and continued to take it off as she prepared drinks, checked her phone and went right back to making drinks. No hand washing between touching her phone, or her mask. She came to our table at one point with the mask hanging off of one ear like an earring not over her face in any capacity. Other times she had it again, under her nose, or would fully pull it down to talk and then put it back to walk away. It was the most disturbing use of mask protocol that I have seen in ANY establishment since masks became mandatory. The cross contamination of her hands and the constant touching of her mask made it almost impossible to focus on enjoying our time there. She was nice enough, but knowing that guests could see her in plain sight continuing to be on her phone etc. was shocking. Several other staff would walk back to the tavern area from the restaurant removing and replacing their masks. Studies have shown our masks protect others from OUR germs and staff at a hotel should certainly be working hard to show they care for their guests who are paying them to be there. Upon check out, the other front desk staff member also did NOT have on a mask at all. For me, again, it’s a respect for the rules you have put in place at your hotel for your guests and staff. I did my part, my 10 year old did her part, and we would expect that adult staff could do theirs. I was very disappointed and we did not feel that our health or safety were a priority, of leaving had been an option we would have, but unfortunately the restaurant was the ONLY place we could get food in natural bridge without loading up my daughter and leaving the town to find dinner. The hotel room itself, while obviously old, was ok. The ballroom was full of old mattresses and we were told they were bringing new ones into some rooms. Our mattress was disgusting when we took a peek at it, but the sheets were clean. The bathroom had been “wiped down” but the floor was full of hairs, and had not been swept in awhile. We expected some aging, and the tiles (some missing) showed signs of that. We were fine with the older charm. Cleanliness of the floors though is not an “old” issue, simply a vacuum would have worked. The door to the room was sticky, and was so dirty on the actual door that I could use a wet towel and wipe some of the grime off. Again, this isn’t an “old” hotel issue, it’s that nothing had been truly cleaned with chemical cleaner or even a wet paper towel in a while. The White door was brown around the door knob and unfortunately had to touch that part to push the door closed so it would latch. Another area where germ spreading and cleaning should be a priority especially during this time. The same is to be said for the window sills, they had not been wiped down in months and it showed. The hotel is not without its charms, it is unique, and the room was “cute”. Sadly, the lack of concern for their guests took away from...
Read moreMy children and I, just spent Spring Break in Natural Bridge, and this is the hotel that we chose for our stay. First and foremost, I want to say that the biggest asset that his hotel has are its employees! I really hope that they understand that.
Our first night there, I was a bit stressed out. We drove up from Virginia Beach, and I can assure you that driving is my least favorite thing to do. Add in some mountains 🏔️, and I am even more stressed out. What should have taken us 3.5 hours, took us nearly 5 hours with restroom breaks, lunch, and my anxiety.
Once we arrived, check in was seamless. We got to our room, which were the double bed option. I have two teens, as we needed to be able to fit in an air mattress. The room was cool, which was nice, and we had plenty of space. Th bathroom had a huge bathtub with plenty of space for personal toiletries, and the water pressure was divine with plenty of hot water!
I decided that I was done venturing for the day, so we went to the Red Fox Tavern for dinner. Our options were limited, as they were out of a lot of items, but the food we chose was delicious. I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, my son had the sirloin steak, and my daughter a burger. The price of a domestic beer was $6, and draft $8. Our bill came out to just under $100, so I decided that was the only night we would be eating there.
Our room purchase had an offer to prepay for breakfast, so that it was what we chose. In hindsight, I would not do that again. The first morning, we were able to choose what we wanted from the menu up to $18 per person, which was more than enough. The next morning though, the owners decided to limit everyone to a very dismal breakfast bar. I explained that I prepaid, and that I did not appreciate the limitation, as I would not get my money back, and the banquet manager was amazing by allowing us the option to order what we had planned. Steak and eggs. My son had talked about it all the previous night, as that is not an option he ever has at home.
Turns out the hotel is just very undermanned. The staff is great, and very accommodating, but without staff the wait times at the bar, the restaurant, and breakfast was very long. An hour and half the first night we arrived, an hour that morning, and then after that we opted to eat out, and/or bring our food back to the hotel.
The location is what really sells the hotel. You can park your car for the entire stay if necessary. The Natural Bridge park is right across the street, the taverns are approximately .5 mile away walkable but not highly recommended, and the Blue Ridge trail is also right down the road. Don’t be fooled by Google Maps though. It still has that trail listed as the Monacan Trail, and the route leads no where close it.
We were able to tackle the trails, and the taverns in one day, so we spent our third day in Lexington. Overall the trip was fantastic, and my children claimed it was their favorite!
There is a country store within 3 miles where you can order food to go or stay, they have everything, and beer and wine. I opted for a 6-pack for $7 vice the $6 per beer at the hotel. I also had gyro from there, and it was delicious! Next time we will just bring cereal and milk for...
