The Lion Country Safari tour itself was a 5-star experience. The campground was not. We stayed at the KOA in a travel trailer on site 27. After hooking up to Shore power, our A/C worked (slowly) but our outlets didn't come on and the breaker tripped after the water heater was turned on. I measured the voltage output at the post. It was 106vdc (should be 120v) from the 30A outlet. The 20A outlet reading was 30vac (should be 120v). Notified office who sent out 2 guys on golf carts (I'm not going to call the maintenance techs or service. They had no clue). This is where the campground loses many stars...they were rude, condescending, and didn't want to hear that low voltage can fry your air conditioner and appliances and you can't use any 2 AC appliances (A/C, water heater, coffee maker, etc) simultaneously without tripping the breaker with 106v output. They told us to move to site 36. I measured the voltage output there at 110v from the melted and rusted 30A outlet and 90v at the 20A outlet. He told me I didn't need that outlet anyway on both sites. Actually, we did need a 20A outlet to use the air fryer if we wanted to use the air conditioner at the same time without tripping the breaker. It was 95° outside. The A/C was set at 74° but only cooled to 79° during the day because the 30A outlet was only 106v. I had already set up completely and wasn't moving. We were camping with others in 4 campsites in a row and they wanted me to move because they couldn't (wouldn't) fix the shore power. I tried to make the men on the golf carts aware of the voltage problems after measuring many outlets nearby. They said "there's alot of people using alot of electricity so that's all you get". The wouldn't listen to my suggestions on fixing it and told me it would be fine for my appliances and wouldn't damage anything due to low voltage. I ran my generator all weekend to run my A/C and appliances safely which cost me over $150 extra just for the gasoline. I was very disappointed in customer service and campground maintain. The Safari and camping with great friends salvaged a terrible stay into a good weekend of fun. Check your electric post with a voltmeter and outlet tester for correct voltage and polarity before...
Read moreThis is definitely the best KOA I have ever stayed at. I try to avoid them as most are super cramped and small and not what I like when staying somewhere. I found this one when in the area and was surprised by the reviews so decided to check it out.
The campground itself is large and the sites have lots of privacy. We had a site on the outside circle that you reverse into, so the canal was behind us with no one around. Being that it's Christmas most people had lights and decorations up on their trailers which was really nice.
We booked 3 nights here and when checking in was surprised to find out it included a 2 day pass to the Lion Safari as well. It didn't say anything about that on their website, so when the front desk girl mentioned it I thought she was trying to force an upsell on us by telling us we are getting a 2 day pass for it. We only went the one day but had a great time. I was surprised to see it's $37 a person as well so for the 2 of us going here that was a huge discount and really appreciated.
We will definitely stay here again when in the area. The only negative I found was their wifi was pretty slow. I work in IT so I never understand why places don't have better policy set up on their devices to restrict bandwidth on devices so that one person can't use all the bandwidth streaming YouTube or other videos. It worked though, it was just slow so I ended up just tethering to my cell phone most of the time.
The only other negative is they say no campfires are allowed which is kind of weird being that it's a campground. We saw at least 4 or 5 people that had a wood campfire going so seems like the rules aren't really enforced. We weren't planning on having a fire anyway but still takes away from the experience a bit when you don't get that nice smell of...
Read moreStayed here 12/23. I wouldn’t stay again but am glad we did. The sound of the lions and monkeys was pretty amazing & slightly ominous. The park is old and few sites allowed for our big 41’ Class A towing Jeep. There are several restaurants and a grocery store about 5 miles away. Their wi-fi was AMAZING fast. Best we’ve ever had. Utilities were fine. The aides in the office were some of the nicest staff I’ve ever met. Each day I came in collecting Amazon packages, they couldn’t have been kinder. My main complaint was the sites. Some had a white gravel and if you had a 5th wheel w/ mid-entry, your door would step out to a nice concrete pad. Our site was a sandy muddy bog. This was NOT good as it rained 3 of the 6 days we were there. Having to step across a sand pit made it difficult to keep the inside of our coach clean. Every time the dogs went outside I had to wash the sand off their paws before they walked around. I was constantly cleaning the floors. Even the outdoor blanket I bought specifically for sand (as we are headed to the Keys) didn’t help much). I did address this w/ the staff and asked if someone could lay some of the white gravel. She explained to me that when they lay the white gravel it actually comes out as a white powder (I imagine it being some sort of gypsum?) the powder turns to hard gravel over time and with exposure to rain. I should have inquired earlier before the rain started and my husband left for a 3 day business trip back west. I was stuck in this spot and can’t drive the coach. I would suggest to anyone in a Class A, to make sure your front door doesn’t open to a dirt or sand pit if rain is in...
