Moraine Campground — Hotel in Mammoth Lakes

Avoid Campground Karen host!! We were scoping the campground for a future trip. There was a sign on the host’s canopy stating the host was off duty. We decided to continue our drive though the small loop as there was no one to check in with. My daughter asked if she could use the restroom, so we made a quick stop. While she was in there campground Karen showed up in a white van yelling that we were scaring off potential campers… no one had even driven through the loop since we’d arrived, literally 3 minutes prior. She continued to scream and try to argue with us as we were driving away. We’ve been camping for YEARS, and have never come upon someone quite this angry for absolutely no reason. I had a great two nights at this campground. I can't near the river and spent my first whole day pretty much sitting by the river or in the river even though it was very cold. The Substitute camp host that came by my first day was extremely nice. I didn't get to meet the regular Camp Post so I don't know about that one. The campground is well kept and there are porta potties throughout. There is no cell signal except maybe a brief one at 3:00 a.m. I did find that I could walk a little ways over towards the other Campground which is closed and I picked up enough signal to send a few text messages. I have camped at all four campgrounds along the canyon here. Moraine is a nice campground, in a mix of high desert brush, dirt and trees. Some sites are closer to the river than others. This campground fills up quickest, due to how close it is to 120/Tioga Rd. (thus, Yosemite). Which also means you will get a bit less quiet as well. If it's full, or you want more solitude at the expense of being close to highway 120, I'd recommend you continue on the road into the canyon to Aspen and Big Bend campgrounds which are deeper into the forest, and much more quiet, and beaituful.
