This was a nice family escape into the TX back country. 'Glamping' you could say. This modern-day teepee had either an acrylic or vinyl roof and door, allowing visitors to sleep with a magnificent view of the stars, while also protecting you from the elements and any critters on the ground. Ever go tenting and wake up in the middle of the night to a howling pack of coyotes? I have. Okay, so they're generally not dangerous. They tend to stay away but when they're hungry enough, don't leave it to chance! These teepees are sturdy and durable and surprisingly quiet. It's even climate controlled with a decent air conditioner, small refrigerator, k-cup coffee maker with kcups, and mood lighting. The light from the AC was a little too bright for sleeping but an easy fix was to throw a towel over it. There is a ready setup campfire spot right at the entrance to your teepee and they sell you logs for a fair price. We enjoyed making smores while enjoying the stars that weekend! The common area bathhouse is a short walk away with ceramic toilets and are climate controlled! The indoor or outdoor shower option was nice. Wifey didn't feel the need to use it because it was cool out. I didn't mind the cold however and using the outdoor shower and sinks was a refreshing experience! This was a very worthwhile experience, highly recommended for those looking for a staycation in the West Texas area. Rick the groundskeeper also did a great job keeping up the maintenance of the area which we noticed as the bath houses and are were clean and maintained 👏. This is also highly recommended for couples or those with small children. Probably not recommended for babies given it is such a quiet place for those looking to enjoy the serenity and tranquility of the great...
Read moreI stayed in one of the stargazers. They were quite small (and don't include linens), but were adequate. While as someone who has done construction work I wouldn't consider them well-built, the ones I saw were solid enough and in good shape. The good: They had a mini-split in each one. The view was amazing, and they are very close to Big Bend National Park. I got some excellent photos of the milky way from here. Rick was very friendly. The bath house was clean. The neighbors I had were awesome. The not-so-good: They apparently double booked my stargazer. There is nobody on site in the evenings (nor anyone at their phone number), and I felt a little bad for scaring the person in the one I rented half to death when I knocked on the door at 9PM when I arrived. This is personal preference, but I found the beds to be a little strange feeling and on the softer side. The wi-fi was poor (my phone wouldn't stay connected), and I think there is only one access point by the bath houses which I was farther away from. There is no cell signal here. The road in is a bit rough (not a problem for me since I had a pickup truck). Their sign is fairly small, but my GPS got me close enough. They could use a bit more parking though. Every night there was a bunch of loud music in Terlingua, some sort of club or something blasting music until 1AM. It wasn't loud enough to prevent me from sleeping in the stargazer, but if I were in one of the campsites in a tent it would have been annoying.
While a little on the expensive side for what they were, I would happily stay here again. It was a neat experience, and they are really close...
Read moreLet me preface this by saying that I am an avid outdoorsman and am no stranger to heat or discomfort. But this place was dangerous and unliveable.
I rented an A-frame for a day after what I knew would be a grueling backpacking trip in BBNP. I wanted to see the mountains and stars with AC and a bed. I checked in at 3pm and found the AC on full blast and an internal temp of 95 (had a thermometer). Granted, it was hot. Temp was 110 in Terlingua that day. The A-frame was poorly sealed and built- there were some unsealed cracks between the plywood and even nails sticking out. The door didn't shut or seal all the way. The fridge inside produced even more heat. I stripped down and waited an hour until I noticed i was sweating faster than I could retain water. I decided the place was too much of a health risk to stay in and drove the 7.5 hours back to Austin. This place should be closed when outside temps are above 95. Great for cold weather. Dangerous in the desert summer. Even just a little bit of insulation and quality control over the sealant would have made things SO much better. Go elsewhere if you come to the BB region in summer. Paying over $100 is not worth it for your safety. There are much better places in the area...
