Let me begin by saying that there is a gas station at this place by the visitor center. This is a BIG national park, so no worries about running out of gas. This campground we stayed is for just about every type of camper. There were 5th wheels, motorhomes, travel trailers, and of course, tents. The spot we stayed was big enough for our 12X16 tent. The ground itself had gavel, not a lot but a good amount of gravel. I think it is because rvs can camp there too. So, sleeping here you definitely need a blow-up mattress not just sleeping bag, good thing we had air mattresses. They have mature trees which gets you shade. Each of the sites have a bear storage steel box. Also, we had no cellphone signal here at all. So, we drove outside the campground to get signal. The road in this campground is paved so riding bikes is easier for the kids. They have running toilets and electricity in the bathroom. The wind at this place was brutal. You will need a good tent that can withstand the strong winds. When we woke up, we saw 2 broken tents and 1 was pulled off the stakes. So, secure your tents very well to the ground. If you want to some hiking, you should go to the Chisos Basin, there are some good trails there. There were only 2 trails at the Rio Grande Village and weren't that good in my opinion. We also visited the Hot springs right on the Rio Grande and the hot spring historic district, now that was interesting learning about. The water in that springs was about 105 degrees. Awesome! I would like to go back to Big Bend again and visit other places within this park and do more hiking and take in some nice scenery views and see...

I couldn't find a review page for the RV campground so posting here. We booked 9 months out to ensure a spot. While it's a lot with 25 RV spots, you have electric, water and sewer hookups. When you're staying a lengthy time, it's good to have. The campground is just down the street and looked very nice. We wanted to be in the national park since it's big and you'd put in a lot of miles getting in and out of it. ||We were so lucky we got the absolute best spot in the RV park and could look out onto a large pretty grassy, treed area on the end. ||It's run by a concessionaire and you check in at the camp store where the laundry, restrooms and showers are also housed should you need those when staying at the RV Village or campground. The guy who checked us in was very nice and explanatory. ||As a note, there are coyote in the area so be careful of your pets. Do not leave them outside alone and especially at night! Walk them with a flashlight and carry a stick to just make noise with should you see one. ||We got to view a lot of javelina right from our site one morning as they grazed in the green area. The picnic area is a quick walk or bike ride down the street. ||We also went to the campground one evening to listen to the ranger's talk on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive which was extremely helpful and informative. The talk was at the amphitheater. ||February was a perfect time to visit this park. We loved it and...

I have major safety concerns. Was almost trampled by horses in the site multiple times at night and the noise level from said horses was so so loud. I am not picky with tent camping but this site is not tent friendly right now. There is a group of horses that straight up was feet from trampling us after getting spooked in the middle of the night. Yes, you can’t control animals and it’s a risk, but they were not there when I last stayed there. They hung out all night right next to our tent (fine). But one of the horses has a bell around its next and you will not be sleeping much if he is in the camp site. So bring earplugs and chose an outside site not near the center where they graze. The last night we stayed there the horses (at least 6) were grazing by our tent around 4am and were spooked by a camper with a headlamp walking to the bathroom and completely lost their minds and we had three of them within inches of the tent that luckily freaked out and swerved around the tent. They did run over the front corner. They came back later that night and got spooked an additional time and ran off. So not only was I scared for my safety after that, the campsite was pretty loud in general for anyone in a tent. Did not get much sleep here. Might have just chose the worst site ever (site 92). But really really unsettled by the multiple encounters with the...

There are only a couple dozen sites with hook ups near the store (that were full in February), and then another area where we stayed with water and a dump station, but no hookups. One part is okay for generators between 8 and 8, and the other part is no generators. It's an awesome location to explore the SE part of Big Bend. It's also very popular, and in fact the sign at Panther Junction said full. Since it was 10am we drove the 20 miles hoping for a site anyway if someone was checking out, since it's first come first served. We checked with the host in space 72 and they said there was one spot left for one night. We took it, and then scouted out other sites for the next day. Part of the campground is reservable with white tickets on the site posts. These were all full or booked. Part is not reservable and these have orange tags on the site post with the date the occupant has paid through. On recommendation of the host, we found a nearby site that was scheduled to be vacated, made friends with the occupant to learn his plans, then filled out a fee envelope and put our ticket behind his on the post. Boom, we had a site for the next night and as long as we would've wanted to stay. Great nature trail at the campground, also convenient access by bike or car to the hot springs trail and the Boquillas border crossing.

We had a nice time in this no services campground and stayed on sites 19 and 10 in the « no generator » loop which was great since the sites there are more secluded and close to a nice trail. But just across the street was the festival of generators…boy it was loud. We have a motorhome and installed solar panels and lithium batteries so we don’t have to rely on generator but it looks like we are the exception…Also allowing generators from 7-8am to 10pm is way too long. Also, can someone explain why the showers (2$ for 5 mins) are closed between 8 and 9am at the store? Totally get that they need to be cleaned up but during downtime not in the morning rush…It is like closing roads in the morning traffic…not super smart. There are also access to wifi and two washing machines and a dryer at the store. The park itself was amazing but the crossing to Mexico was close on Mon and Tue during winter. The Fossil Discovery Exhibit is quite cool, a must see.
