McCoy's Campground was a good visit. I only gave it 4 stars because it is a little less supervised than I would like. Now it was just my friend and I this time around so that wasn't a problem. Its so far off the beaten path that it has the feel of a more local hangout spot than anything so I dont know that I would bring the family. Couple that with the port a pots which are not a family favorite. But just a couple of guys it was fine. It is really a beautiful site with an amazing trail alongside the C&O Canal, you could walk for hours...days really. We only did 8 miles that day. Overall I recommend it for groups and/or multiple families who gather and camp together. And of course groups of guys or ladies who camp together. Not high on my solo family campsite list but still good. Beautiful, clean, great spot for a long scenic hike. Campsites were also a good size. Update: another great visit! Some of the updated pics are the same but we went a little further down the C&O Canal toe path. 10 total miles, lots of scenic spots to stop and enjoy! Update: another good visit. Not many new pictures this time. But I will say that Fall is a great time to visit!

Nice campground. Sites are right by the river, although only Sites 1 and 3 actually have direct water view - the others on the water are too overgrown in the summer. No access to the river directly from campsites, but the nearby boat ramp is well maintained (albeit steep). Each site has a fire ring, a separate grill, and a picnic table. The campground has one vault toilet that is intermittently cleaned, plus port-a-potties. There is a potable water pump that works sometimes but is horribly loud (especially when your site neighbors use it at 5 am…), so best to bring your own water along with your own toilet paper. Easy enough to do, since you can pull your car right up to your campsite. Lots of river traffic during the day and early evening, as a gathering spot for boats is located just north of the campground. Trains pass on both sides of the river, and they can be pretty loud. It doesn’t last long, though. Easy access to the C&O Canal towpath, perfect for a hike or to bike. Easy access to the river for fishing and boating. There appears to be no on-site registration for the campground. Make reservations online at Recreation.gov.

A hidden gem. When you pull through the tunnel & come out on the other side to a green, park-like area, boat launch, & parking lot it's a surprise. The campsites are decently sized n run along either side on the single lane road that leads back to a single, large, group campsite. Sites have a picnic table, fire ring, and standing grill box. One side of the road is waterfront but all sites have a view of the River. There's a water pump & 2 port-a-pots mid-camp & a single Handicap latrine at the boat launch parking lot, all were very clean when we were there. Just on the other side of the tunnel before you come in is a local that sells firewood n will deliver it to your site for a fair price. This is my 3rd yr camping here with our Boy Scouts & we always have had a positive experience. Do note that the trains run during the night and sound as though they are running THROUGH your tent, lol.

This campsite has a fantastic view but some things don’t make this a 5/5. Let’s start with the good things.

Positives: Campsites are easy to locate Sites have access to running water. Not sure if it’s drinkable. Most sites have river view Nearby dock (2-6 min walk) which you can launch boats and utilize for a good fishing spot Sites come with a nice fire pit with a grill overtop which allows for you to cook food. Wouldn’t recommend directly placing food on grill as it is dirty. Sites also have a stand up grill which you can use to cook with firewood

Cons:

Sites have no privacy and are very close to one another. You are separated by the next site with maybe 10 yards of grass. Despite paying for the site, you receive no firewood and will need to bring some. Nothing out of the ordinary for MOST campsites I’d say Washrooms are all without plumbing, smells rough

My girlfriend and I went to this site as it was a cheap spot with a good riverside site. We weren’t expecting much. It has everything you’d need. However I WOULD NOT recommend this for families or very large groups. It will be easy to bother neighbors.

There is no park supervision on the site and it is quite isolated. Only one way to enter and exit and that’s via a spooky tunnel. Perhaps it’s my paranoia but I was a little spooked and did worry about the event of a possible theft because there wouldn’t be much I could do. I wouldn’t say that’s the definition of the experience at McCoys but definitely something to consider.

You definitely can’t set up a tent on the designated site itself because it’s a very rocky surface. You’ll have to use the grass around the site.

Sites are small, one vehicle and 1-2 mid sized tents is all I’d recommend. 2 tents is pushing limits in terms of site size.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. It’s a nice bank for your buck type of campsite for a few friends or couples. It was also super empty when we camped Monday night. There was only one other group...

Awesome campground..... Quaint, unassuming, in the middle of no where, rural, no disturbance (well, a little, but will get to that later)....

We camped here for the long weekend and the site is right next to Potomac River..... If you are an avid kayaker, boater or water scooter, you will have a blast at this place, as the landing is yards away from the campground.

Since Hagerstown is close by, we didn't rely on coolers or icepacks..... It's a 20 mins drive to fresh food where you can buy and grill them fresh everyday.....

As far as disturbance, since you next to Potomac, you can have some early birds zipping and zooming thru the waters...but the main one comes from the trains that are on both sides of the campground....especially the on one on VA (Campground side) where the train track is literally a few feet away above your head..... There are 3 trains between 4 AM to 5 AM, the one in the middle is the one being over your head..... If you don't mind that, you will like this campground.

Bathrooms for showers - The river is your only option....

Toilets - Potta Potty's ..... they are not that bad (all relative right?) if you had ever ventured into a one at a...
