Nothing short of exceptional. Firstly; if you are looking for a 5 star experience and plan on spending hours in the room then look else ware. What this place offers is a refreshing escape from creature comforts and excess. Fortunently the motel breaks the norm by adding charm instead of things. Cat (who as far as I can tell runs the place) fills in the blanks with old world ways and a human approach rather than corporate. The motel is a stone throw away from downtown Yellow Springs making it an easy crash pad for a day of festivities. A phone call and she squeezed out one last room for our spur of the moment road trip. Upon arriving she was in the midst of cleaning and decorating, keys were exchanged and the only check out required was leaving cash on the dresser upon check out (how cool is that?). Rolling in the first thing travelers will spot is the festive and throwback roadside motel sign in all of it's neon glory. Instant memories of starlight drive inn's on country dark roads. A brightly colored and well kept series of rooms stretches the length of the parking lot. Murals decorate both ends of the building and beautiful and fun decorations help to add to the overtly positive vibe this place has. The room itself was small, efficient, and had everything we need (including mini fridge, shower with suds, cable TV, desk, "comfy chair", and window side bed). Again it is important to stress that the focus is on the atmosphere more so than the standard motel perks. The room was nothing short of cute and cozy. Guest are encouraged to sit outside their rooms and converse with other travelers. Stroll around the grounds and rediscover nature and the quiet things we often ignore. It is hard not to find peace while watching the woodline, sipping a beverage, and making new and spontaneous friends who are there for the same reason you are. At night the grounds glow with a warm light. We took the opportunity to start a fire in the ring with the included wood and firestarter. Smore making materials are in the unoccupied office and tips are encouraged. The age old honor system is in place for snacks and drinks in the office as well only adding to the old world charm that makes this place special. The wifi is spotty at best and iOS devices will not connect to the router but cell phone coverage is A-Ok. We made it a point to limit electronic devices but it is worth mentioning if you require an internet connection. All in all this is a very unique place that provided much more than we ever intended and an unforgettable friendliness factor...
Read moreSerious safety issue made this a 1-star review. I’ll start by saying that providing for guest safety and security is the #1 responsibility of any lodging. The doors at the Springs Motel unlock with keypad entry, which is convenient for the off-site staff and guests alike. I realized on my first night that my room door did not include a deadbolt or even a working chain, meaning that anyone with the code to my door could walk right in while I slept. I was able to rig up a solution that would, at the very least, cause me to wake up if someone entered my room in the middle of the night. While not ideal, I chalked this up to the laid back vibes of the town and I figured I’d be ok for two nights. The next evening I was in my room with the window open and I heard a couple next door entering their room for the first time. They had lost their key code, so they called offsite management to ask for the code. I overheard them verbally confirm the code and it was THE SAME CODE I had been using for my door!!! I can only assume that all rooms have the same code. There are all types of scenarios where this could pose a serious safety concern (someone coming back late at night and accidentally entering the wrong room, someone with the master code intentionally doing harm, etc)
These are not networked locks, so unless management goes to each individual door following each checkout, they cannot change the code. For management the solution is simple…one master code.
I called offsite management and was given excuses like change in ownership, front desk staff screwing up, the new locks have not been installed yet, etc. Apparently the place was purchased by the owners of the Mills Park Hotel in town and they haven’t worked out all the kinks yet.
It’s really too bad. This is a very cute place, a short drive to town, and really the only affordable option close to downtown YS. I’d been here before when the motel was under the previous management and I remember them being wonderful. I would love to come back with my kids but I won’t until I know the safety issues have...
