So many little things make staying at Prairie Path a rejuvenating experience for the soul. Waking up in the morning and having wonderful, hot coffee waiting for you on the upstairs porch is absolutely my favorite thing! Porch swing, comfy furniture and plenty of homemade quilts/ throws, in case the morning is cool. It's a visual and sensory feast with beautiful flowers, trees, birds, and wild rabbits busy in the yard. You might catch Buster milling about in the yard doing a few important chores, like filling bird feeders and bird baths while Fern is downstairs creating homemade, hearty GOODNESS in the kitchen! Amazing aromas waft upstairs and build your breakfast anticipation. Once downstairs, you find a beautifully set table and you experience an incredible spread. Nothing better in this world...and "ditto" on the other reviews, you won't be hungry all day after this sumptuous feast. I had the good fortune to stay four times this summer with my husband, my mom and then two more times with family. We visited Mt. Carroll to primarily see shows at Timber Lake Playhouse where our son was a resident intern there doing summerstock. Top notch entertainment at Timber Lake and not to be missed. Truly. Prairie Path became a fantastic home base to so many Midwest adventures this summer into Mt. Carroll, Clinton, Galena, Elizabeth, Dubuque, Madison WI, Chicago, Quad Cities, Le Claire... fantastic history in every direction. I miss the old hats and sheet music that adorn the upstairs walls, the wonderful quilts on the beds, the huge "shared" bathroom, chatting with Fern and Buster at breakfast and the baked treats in the kitchen when you come in after a long day of exploring. I love that Prairie Path is completely different from my own East Texas digs on the lake. On our last stay, we hugged both Fern and Buster "goodbye". Such good, kind people that feel like family to us now. I think about them often and can't wait till I can see them again and Prairie Path! I know the coffee is waiting for me on the...

There is nothing commercial about their establishment which makes it just like staying at grandma's house. Their home becomes yours for your stay with a breakfast spread each morning that is delicious and filling. Fern easily accommodated my food allergy. She also rose earlier than usual one morning of our stay so we could have coffee before heading out for a hot air balloon ride. The area offers several restaurants within a short 1 mile stroll as well as being a short drive to Galena for shopping or Savanna to enjoy the woodlands and wildlife along the Mississippi. If you've ever wanted to try the B&B experience or already know you live it Praire Path needs to be your destination of choice. We'll be...
Read moreOur two-night stay at the Prairie Path Guest House was wonderful! We arrived to a plate full of home-made cookies, and suggestions as to where to go for dinner, a play, and even a haunted house right there in Mt. Carroll. The breakfast for the next two days was fabulous. There were 6 of us in our party and Fern made enough for 12! We ate so much, none of us was even hungry for lunch either day...and we would come back to another plate of cookies each afternoon. The first night we had dinner in Clinton, IA (about a 30 minute drive to Candlelight Inn right on the Mississippi. The portions were so big, we ate our leftovers the next night. The next day we took a day trip to Galena and saw Grant's home, and walked the town. Great trip, and Fern and Buster were...
