My husband and I were really wanting to get away from some really stressful happenings in our small hometown, but every place we tried to go (we planned this trip on a really short notice) was full. I decided on a whim to try Amish County in Ohio (which I thought was about 2 hours from where we live, but was really like 4 hours away). Tried several cabins, which were all booked up as well. I asked one of the places I called if he would recommend somewhere nearby that might be open and he told me to try one of the bed and breakfasts in a nearby town. One quick search and I found the Grapevine B&B, one quick phone call and we were in! ||||We stayed in the Beta Room and it was spotless clean. Had its own bathroom of course, and two beds (one full and one queen). We could open the windows and listen to the rain and hear the Amish buggies rolling by and the horses clip-clopping down the street. The house was beautifully decorated, and the people we met were all super friendly. ||||The owner, Marlene, (I think she is the owner?) was nice as she could be. We met her and sat on the porch (in the amazingly comfortable rocking chairs) and talked to her and another couple we met there one evening. She had a lot of knowledge about her Amish neighbors and was very interesting to talk to. ||||The Grapevine House is in tiny Winesburg, Ohio. There is a place down the street that serves ice cream and pizza (a very very short walk, maybe 1/2 a block away or so) but we didn't get to eat there. Everybody said the pizza was amazing so of course we are already planning another visit back for that! There is also a coffee shop, like almost directly across the street. We didn't get to try that one either. We were only there for Friday evening and all day Saturday (everything is closed on Sunday) and there just wasn't time. We went to nearby Berlin and Millersburg to eat both days. But of all the places we went, I think Winesburg was my favorite because of the laid back atmosphere. Seriously, if I could I would move to this town. We liked it that much. Felt very safe. Felt like my town used to feel, back in the 70s when I was a kid. ||||The only downside (if you call this a downside) is there was really no "breakfast". I mean, there was a full kitchen and you could have made a bowl of cereal or had a doughnut or yogurt, but we wanted a real Amish breakfast so we drove about 3 miles to the Der Dutchman restaurant to have breakfast. We knew all this going in, though, and didn't mind the breakfast thing. ||||I want to visit again soon and bring my mom. She would love...
Read moreEven though we live close enough to Holmes County for day trips. my husband and I returned to the Grapevine House to celebrate our 26th anniversary. This was our second stay there (the first was in 2015) and we even got the same room -the Delaware in Erma's House. Laura checked us in and was very helpful, even after we accidentally locked ourselves out of the room in our first hour!||We knew going in that breakfast was very simple, but it was fine with us. We don't generally like large breakfasts and there is a lovely café across the street that was perfect on the day we wanted more than coffee and some oatmeal.||The bed was comfortable and the quilt was especially appreciated given that on our first night the outside temperature was a chilly 50 (in June!). There were extra pillows as well that made it very easy to get comfortable watching TV once we settled in for the night.||There is no bathtub in the room, but the shower is a large single with shelves for toiletries. It was spotlessly clean, and the towels were fluffy and soft. There are also toiletries and a hair dryer provided.||The best part of the place is still the back porch with its view of the lovely gardens. It is accessible through the parlor at Erma's House and from the main building. The Delaware room also has its own entrance from the street, but there is surprisingly little street noise to bother you in the room.||When it came time to check out, we had a lovely chat with Saren, who shared stories about life in Amish country. She obviously enjoys working with the public and takes great pride in the Grapevine House.||I highly recommend the Grapevine House as a great...
Read moreBed Bugs..... Sorry to be negative reviewer here. My family found this place on a last second booking last Friday night. We stayed 1 night in the main house upstairs in 2 bedrooms, double beds.. Off the beaten path in a nice area, very Amish B&B as we had never done one before. The owner operators were very nice Amish people and made us feel welcome and comfortable. Coming home Saturday evening after a long day of Amish flea markets and good eating, my child who slept in the other room with my wife and littles girl noticed a bite mark. Then from there my wife started seeing bite marks. Both of whom are very sensitive to any bites. My one child ended up at the ER and it was confirmed that she had beg bug bites. She had a moderate reaction to the bites,. They are on the mend a week later. We have had to take extra measures at home to clean and clean and clean and treat for what will be a month or more and then watch for months to come for any new bites or signs the bed bugs made their way home in luggage or other items we had at the Grapevine. Myself and two boys slept in the other room and had no issues thankfully. I did reach out to the owner and told them what was going on. I have yet to hear back from them. The online booking site was also alerted and said they were taking the matter up with the owner. It is a shame as we had no other issues. I will not return to a place that has any history...
