Arrowhead Inn — Hotel in New Salem

When I made the reservation, a man answered, sounding flustered and handed the phone over to a girl who said she wasn't trained to take my information so only took my name and confirmed the day. I didn't feel comfortable but as we were only passing through for the night, I left it. When we got there, it was not like its picture, very run down. The entrance was confusing and had a pass code lock on it. We knocked and got a grumpy, What? A man came out and when I said my name and we had a reservation, he said, She said she called you to cancel because the guy in that room decided to stay. I told him she never took my phone number. He said she must have called the wrong number. He did offer to have one of his workers sleep in his space for the night and we could have that room. We decided we didn't want to drive onto Mandan/ Bismarck, so decided to stop off at New Salem and booked into the Arrowhead Inn; of our three week trip, this proved to be the most disappointing place we stayed at. The room was amazingly small (and writing as a Brit, that takes some beating). The furniture appeared shabby and the room was dominated by a large chest of drawers, leaving no room for a table or even a chair. Moreover, there was no where to hang your clothes, not even any hangers. This place is wonderful. I called at like three in the morning looking for an off-the-highway pet friendly motel room in the middle of a very long road trip. They were SO FRIENDLY and accommodating. They even set our room up with snacks and dog treats and dishes when we arrived and were so gracious about check-out time knowing we got in late! Lots of quaint personal touches ❤️ Our vehicles were safe overnight, packed with our belongings. I would not hesitate to recommend this place and would love to stay again if we ever find ourselves somewhere in the middle of...
