If you missed your school days and wish to relive what it was like to be in school and got told what are allowed, what are not do, stick to some sort of rules and enjoy cafeteria food, this is the place for you. The check-in counter staff was curt at best.

On arrival around 2.30 from Washington on Saturday 19 April, we were eager to get some lunch and a cup of coffee. Well, the famous M club wasn’t operating. It closes on Saturdays until 5pm on Sundays.

Don’t fret. There are one restaurant, a bar and the Market Place. We chose the restaurant. There were 3 tables of guests (one group soon left after we sat down) and the rest was free. We sat at a table for two but thought it would be more comfortable if we moved to a larger table so we can put down our things. Being international travellers, we felt we should have our important items with us. Now that’s a big ‘No No’, The only waiter came over and told us the large table is reserved for a group of 4 or more and would we move back to the table for two. It’s apparently a restaurant policy which he couldn’t break. We would understand that if we were in the rush hours and the restaurant was busy but that wasn’t the case. The menu was limited and more akin to a fast food joint. I decided I would wait to get something elsewhere later but my husband stayed. He ordered a sandwiches and asked for a beer. That was another ‘No No’’. Apparently it’s out of the serving hours. When my dear husband asked if that’s a state law or something like that, the waiter looked a bit sheepish and didn’t say anything.

There is a bar and a Market Place on the some floor by the check in counters. The Market Place has 2 Starbucks coffee machines but don’t expect a latte, cappuccino and such. The 3 choices are light, medium or dark roast. After you pay, the machine will then grind the beans, filter and make your coffee. It took a while. There are regular milk, almond milk and oat milk in the fridge located under one of the machines. You can fix your coffee whichever way you prefer. There were no cup sleeves for the cups at the time but never mind, the coffee was only lukewarm. There is, however, a microwave, you can heat your coffee to your heart’s desire.

If you’ve got spare time on your hands, have a go at figuring out how to enlarge the sheets that are supposed to cover the duvet. We failed.

We had a chance to dine at the M Club on Sunday 20 April when it reopened. It’s nothing like any other M Club we’ve been. There were no coffee machines. Instead there were 2 coffee urns, a hot water urn, 3 types of tea bags and 2 kinds of milk. There was a salad bar, some whole fruits, 1 main dish of chicken tinga, 1 dish of yellow rice and 1 dish of creamed spinach. There were microwave popcorns, corn chips and a few such items. The middle section of the long counter laid bare. There was a fridge with sodas and bottled water. A couple of family with kids and a few others came in, took a look of the offerings and left. Interesting that we were at the Tyson Corner Marriott Washington before we came to this Marriott and they operated throughout the weekend and on Easter holidays. The staff were welcoming, food and drinks were fantastic. The stark contrast of two are beyond comprehension.

Please note there is no fridge or safe in the room.

The upside is they offer a 24-hour free shuttle service to the airport every 15 minutes. You can definitely find more food and drink choices there if you bother.

Do not stay at this hotel!!!

I strongly recommend reconsidering if you plan to stay at the Marriott Newark Liberty Hotel. Being hospitable is a fundamental requirement in the hospitality business. Ensuring that guests feel welcomed, respected, and cared for during their stay is essential. Without hospitality, the essence of the hotel industry would be lost.

As a long-time Gold member of Marriott Bonvoy's Elite Travel Rewards program, I was disappointed by how the hotel's check-in staff and the Rooms Operation Manager, Angelo Daniels, treated me. First of all, the lack of acknowledgment of my long years of loyalty to the brand during my recent check-in on Memorial Day night was very exasperating. To add to the frustration, Angelo denied my eligibility for a government rate; he claimed I had no ID when I presented him with alternate identification, and I was instead asked to agree to a more expensive rate or forfeit my deposit. Angelo was dismissive and made it clear that his decision was final after trying to plead my case.

I expressed my concerns that I couldn't accept a higher rate because I would not be reimbursed without the government rate and would be forced to pay out-of-pocket if I accepted his new rate, but these were ignored. Furthermore, I reiterated that my flight to Newark was delayed by over six hours. I was tired and needed a place for a few hours since it was a late check-in at around 10:45 PM to check out at 8 AM. I would only be in the room for a few hours before catching my connecting flight to San Francisco in the morning, but Angelo insisted that I pay $400 for this brief stay. I also offered to cover the charges with points but was also rebuffed.

Fortunately, I received assistance from a Marriott Bonvoy telephone agent who was able to rebook me at the Courtyard Hotel, located only five minutes away, after Angelo had my reservation canceled. The agent was understanding and genuinely apologetic. He even tried to mediate, but Angelo would not talk to him. He eventually was able to escalate my issue and had my full deposit refunded.

A Manager of people should be able to exercise emotional intelligence and understand that hotel services are designed and delivered with the guests' comfort, convenience, and satisfaction as the primary objectives. The absence of these elements, as in my experience, reflects poorly on the establishment and risks damaging its reputation.

Based on my experience, which is my first time being treated like this at any hotel, I urge you to avoid the Marriott Newark Liberty Hotel. The staff's lack of empathy and flexibility is the sole reason I am giving it one point. There are numerous more cost-effective and hospitable options in the...

After weaving our way through the somewhat confusing airport approach to the hotel, we were very impressed with the lobby and the overall cleanliness of the hotel.

Clarisse checked us in and was friendly and knowledgeable about taking transportation to NY city. She was an outstanding representative and offered excellent customer service.

Our room had two very comfortable queen sized beds that felt comparable to what we have at home.

Unfortunately the room did not have a mini fridge and had a terrible shower water backup problem that could not be fixed during our stay. Standing in a pool of water, hair, and soap left from past visitors is one of the grossest things that I actually had to pay for in my life. We were offered a change of room but that was not ideal either since we were completely unpacked and not willing to move again with no guarantee that the next shower would be any better. Very disappointing.

Also there was no complimentary coffee in the lobby as we have experienced many times with travel sports. We were left with the choice of the dicey room coffee maker or the expensive Starbucks machine in the lobby.

During the afternoons, the lobby did offer some refreshing cucumber water and delicious pastries. We also ate two meals in the hotel restaurant that were very good and reasonably priced. We might have eaten breakfast there again had the restaurant not closed for the day at 11am.

At checkout, we had to have the parking charge removed from our room, since it was supposed to be complimentary through the third party we booked our room and the baseball tournament. The rep at checkout was also a really nice guy and would be a valuable addition to any hotel staff. He helped to take care of the parking issue.

Upon arriving home, we realized we forgot a cellphone charger. Knowing exactly where we left it in the room, we contacted the hotel again for assistance in retrieving the charger. We were told we would receive a call back after checking our room. We never received a call and thank goodness another guest from our team asked at the front desk to check our room and the charger was found and returned.

On the whole, our stay probably would have been more tolerable and less nitpicking had the shower issue been resolved to our satisfaction.

Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott truly has the potential to be the oasis in the middle of Newark!
