We stayed at Norwood Campground based on the positive reviews provided by several sites. We stayed in a 40 ft Motorhome for 4 nights. If you journey there….. Be aware- BOTH of our Garmin GPS’s (one for the car and a special one for the RV set up for our size RV) misguided us as we approached from the SOUTH. They both INCORRECTLY led us to the OPPOSITE side of the campground property, where there is NO ACCESS to the property (you can’t even really see the campground from there either.) This is unsettling while driving a large RV with a car in tow as one must navigate UP and DOWN some steep, narrow twisting roads near the campground.) There were NO SIGNS indicating directions to campground as we came from the SOUTH. (Later we would see numerous signs IF you were approaching from the NORTH or WEST.) Starting with the positive- we were able and allowed to check in early (noon instead of the rather late 4pm listed on their website. ) Staff was great, bathrooms and pool clean. Place was reasonably quite AT NIGHT. Overall it is a decent rustic older campground up on a wooded hillside….but, with NO view of the lake. The great majority of sites are occupied by either full timers, or seasonal folks. Now for the downsides…..(1) Based on their website saying “We are located on nearly 40 acres with private access to Lake Tillery……” We had hoped to utilize our blow up rowboat at the lake, however, it is about a 5 minute walk through the woods, across the road and then down a somewhat steep treacherous path with loose rocks and gravel in order to get to that lake. Not really as convenient an “access” as we had expected. To be clear, this campground is NOT on the lake. (2) The roads through the campground are rough, and dusty and in spots quite twisty and steep- some NOT passable with a 40 foot RV. In fact, the site we had pulled into and stayed at (a pull through) was actually pointless because we were unable to pull OUT upon departure! We actually were forced to BACK UP ALL THE WAY OUT of the campground! Literally the road out for our site was CLOSED down due to a recent fire in one of their buildings. The truth though, is even IF that road was open, we could not use it for our rig because IF we tried to pull out straight from our spot, the immediate turn and slant upwards from our site would be stressful on the body of any large coach such as ours. (3) When I made the online reservation, I admit that I should have searched further into what “NS PT” meant for the only site that could accommodate our rig. At $66 per night, I assumed (incorrectly) that this was a full hook up. Interestingly, if one looks over the website, it seems that the price for a site WITH or WITHOUT sewer is the same at $66 per nite. PLEASE BE AWARE- Afterwards, I learned that “NS PT” was an abbreviation for- no-sewer Pull-Through…. So it came as a surprise that for our 4 day stay we would have no sewer. (4) The cable TV provided kind of worked a bit, then mostly did NOT. (5) The internet we were advised upon checking in was supposedly spotty…. And in truth it rarely worked at all. (6) They do have a decent pool… however, It does not open till (supposedly) 10am! Problem was for us, went to use it at 1030am and it was LOCKED/not open, so consulted at office and told they were running late on other side of campground and that they would be right over to open it. Fast forward 1115- fellow in there says it is still closed and he needed ANOTHER half hour to open it. (7) NO HOT WATER at shower by us…. We were told we could use showers at other side of campground. Ironically- maintenance guy (who is an owner) says that the people from that OTHER side of the park often come over to use the showers closer to us because these are nicer! He claims that “they could have used up all the hot water” before we got to use them. Issue with that explanation- we were in there at 730am, prior to anyone else…. Oh and there response to all of these issues? “Oh my, it sounds like you are not having a good stay.” Would NOT...
Read moreits a very nice location to the lake, but it's a very old place, run down, the amenities are two, the pool is small and old and so is the pond. the bathrooms are from the 1950's or something, they have never been updated at all. there are not enough showers for the size of the camp, there were five. one bathhouse was out of service, there's a big hole in the ground behind it, they never fixed it. they have plumbing issues, reservation issues, and cable/ wifi issues on a regular basis. don't be surprised if you are double booked for a spot on the schedule when you are there, they will ask you to move during your vacation. three of our friends were asked to move their spot mid-stay, we had to move ours also. we got stuck under the wasp nests, the bugs and spiders own the place. the roads are terrible, no pavement anywhere. and when it rained, the roads had long holes washed out from water erosion. the trail in the woods is not maintained. watch your step oldies, this is not a handicap friendly place, not for my grandmother anyway, the hills are dangerous, i slipped on the rocks myself. watch out for small children and infants because there are no lights at night, and no real parking lot, so you have to walk around with a flashlight if your kids plan to be out after dark. at night we saw two wild dogs that ran around looking for food ,running through the whole place. there was mildew everywhere, and our picnic table was covered in mold. our friends stayed here for two months this summer too, and their spot was damaged by a fallen tree during a storm. a 70 foot tree fell on their stuff, damaged all three of the vehicles, and the staff was not helpful at all. there are a lot of maintenance issues on this property, we saw several trees fall down in the rain here. the cable was always out with snow on the tv, and the wifi was down or slow, but never fast enough. the kids playground was marked off and closed due to covid, but then they had a fourth of july party here, and nobody is wearing masks, and no one is spacing out, everyone is running around socializing. its like there is no pandemic going on and nobody cares. we didn't care for the young girl who runs the place in the front office, she lacked professionalism and was inconvenienced easily. the staff does the best they can it seems, we will not...
Read moreNorwood Campground, Norwood, NC. We spent a week here and were pleased overall.
This is a rustic campground which services all types of RV's and tent campers. The spots are all wooded and generally unlevel as the campground is located on hilly terrain. Amenities include restrooms, showers, and a laundry as well as a pool and a small pond for catch and release fishing. The facilities are older and show their age but are functional and the staff keep them clean and sanitized. A new playground for children has been constructed and gives younger children something to do. Bike riding for small children was challenging because of the rocky roads and hilly terrain.
The electrical service was clean and functional. They had 20, 30, and 50 amps. Unfortunately they are all on separate boxes and have no breakers. If someone does not have an EMS, they would have to plug in with the service on. Not the best system. Our neighbor tripped a breaker on hs 30 amp circuit and had to contact park staff to locate and unlock the breakers so it could be reset.
They provide cable and WiFi. The cable was about 70 channels and the WiFi was more then adequate, a real surprise. We were able to attach two ipads and my laptop and still receive speeds over 20 meg downloads.
Unfortunately due to the extensive tree coverage, our Verizon cell service was sketchy. Whenever we left the park and had open sky, we were able to get good signal strength.
The staff is super friendly and are available all the time. They drive around the park frequently and clean the areas as campers leave.
Every camper we met there was friendly. This included the full time folks.
The city of Norwood is small and limited in restaurants and major shopping choices. However, big box store and lots of restaurants are less than 10 miles away. We did eat locally at some of the local mom and pop restaurants and enjoyed them. People were friendly even though it was obvious we were not local.
I have read some really negative past reviews and while I see the points they made, we went there to get away and enjoy some piece and quiet. We don't require fancy amenities but enjoy the basic ones. It is obvious that improvements are being made at the park and if you want a rustic, quiet get away for a while, this...
