All in all bad experience if you’re from anywhere else in the US and used to a standard NPS site.
Trashy crowd. I am used to camping in the mountains where people are typically respectful and quieter, so perhaps take this with a grain of salt. Our camp neighbors decided to whip out a loud speaker and blast karaoke starting around 9:00pm on Friday night and 10:00pm Saturday night (going well past midnight both nights) without any consideration that others might be trying to sleep or enjoy the sounds of the ocean. Other neighbors hooked up a long hose to the nearby sink and led it back to their site, so no one else has access. There was vomit in the men’s bathroom floor on Sunday morning… There were a handful of other groups that exhibited behaviors in line with this kind of stuff, albeit less obnoxious and selfish. I come to nature seeking… nature. Did not come seeking more city behavior. This is not the peace or aloha spirit I expected from Hawaiians. I was sorely disappointed.
Then there’s the campground. The “sites” are unmarked and difficult to follow. The men’s bathroom smells like rotten death. I still feel like a need to throw up to rid my memory of the smell. Trust me, I have done plenty of beach camping throughout all of California and seen what it can look like — this is much worse in smell and appearances. There is mold and deterioration throughout it. There was also literal vomit on the bathroom floor on Sunday morning.
Also, a heads up: there is quite a bit of wind throughout the site given its location near the east shore. It is difficult to pitch a tent in...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite places to camp. We've been coming here for at least 3 years and have had friends join us with their kids. It's absolutely fantastic. Personally my favorite spots, are the ones towards the back away from the beach. You have tons of privacy and space all to yourself. Snagging a spot around 6-8 or 11-13 is awesome, because you are right by the bathrooms and showers. They take the trash out daily and you have your own huge trash can at every site. It's only $32 to camp there (total) for the entire weekend and you can drive on the land and park by your campsite. There is space at every site for multiple vehicles and tents plus canopies and whatever else you want to bring. Depending on the season, it can get windy at night, so bring pants and a hoodie just in case and use good stakes on all your gear. Definitely bring a small hand soap. They don't stock that in the bathrooms. It's a great place for kids. People do make small fires at night that are controlled and they bring dogs, but they keep all that low key and practice safety and are responsible and respectful about it. Night time on the beach is incredible. You can catch TONS of big and small crabs if you're fast enough. All around, our favorite place to camp often. I highly...
Read moreGreat beach, Air force guys are really cool but be careful of this Marine veteran that guards the front gate. He can be a real jerk. He was supposed to be guarding his post but instead was inside his vehicle and chases you down, honking at you for your "DOD" card (which you don't need if you're in a different status). I told him he should've been at his post and told him if he really wants to do his job, go hunt down the guy in front me who also ran the gate that...
